Daphne Ching-Jackson Budget Committee News

The Budget Committee has the responsibility for soliciting input on where our hard-earned interest money should be allocated. In

1998, the Ethel Black Fund was established with a bequest of $25,000, with a bequest of $3,000 by Irene Holmes later added to the

fund. Interest from this fund is used to support projects that support the AAUW Mission Statement. Each spring we ask members for

suggestions on how the money should be spent. Some of the projects supported in the past are Tech Trek, Mentor Program, Math-

Science Conference and Convention Fund. We need your input now on how this year's interest money should be allocated. You may

recommend more than one project. Please e-mail me with your suggestions before May 1st. The Budget Committee will take the

suggestions to the May Board meeting for its consideration and in June, the Branch membership will consider and vote on the

recommendations. Put your thinking caps on and let me hear from you at [email protected]. Thanks!

Carol Smith Membership Garden Party

The lovely flowers of Spring remind us that our annual Membership Garden Party will soon be happening.

The Garden Party this year is scheduled for May 5, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the lovely home of Kay

Hudnall. This is a wonderful opportunity to bring your friends and family members and introduce them to

our programs and activities. Perhaps they will want to join us in our work on behalf of women and girls. At

the March and April Branch meetings, I'll be circulating a signup sheet for refreshments and for volunteers

who may assist with set up and clean up at the event.

We welcome two new members who have recently joined our Branch! Please look for them at our meetings

and activities and give them a warm welcome:

Yvonne Boudevin is a semi-retired psychotherapist who practices in the San Bernardino/Riverside area and

has homes in that area as well as in Seal Beach. She stays frequently at her home in Seal Beach and plans to

attend our Branch activities as her schedule allows her to. She was previously an AAUW member in the

Pasadena and the Santa Clarita Branches.

Nicole Kronebusch has a BS in Social Work, but decided to return to school to become a nurse. She will

graduate from Golden West College this Spring with her nursing degree. Nicole is an AAUW Member at

Large who is also in the Army National Guard and is active in Bethany Church.

The AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund

The public interest in remedying gender discrimination is strong and promoting compliance with Title IX is an

important societal value: Equal athletic treatment is not a luxury. It is not a luxury to grant equivalent benefits and

opportunities to women. It is not a luxury to comply with the law. Equality and justice are not luxuries.”

These words are from pg. 30/31 of the judgment against the Sweetwater School District, San Diego, CA signed

by M. James Lorenz U.S. District Court Judge. It was declared that the Sweetwater School District violated

Title IX across the board and retaliated against the girls’ softball team when they complained about the

violation. The parties were directed to jointly prepare a proposed compliance plan to be submitted within 45

days of the order dated 2/9/12. This is the case that Cacilia Kim spoke of at the November branch meeting.

It is very important to keep our eyes and ears open for the positive outcomes of challenges to Title IX.

Be sure to check out the latest LAF information on the AAUW website.

AAUW FUNDS EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES (EO)

The effectiveness of the AAUW Funds EO is demonstrated in the study projects of the Fellows who receive

grant money, in the work of community action grant recipients, and in the groundbreaking research funded

through the Eleanor Roosevelt Fund. The Eleanor Roosevelt Fund was established by EO in 1988 to offer

teacher fellowships, commission research, and sponsor community action projects in the areas of math and

science. This research has brought public awareness to the differences in the quality and quantity of education

among girls and boys, as well as ensuring that girls are prepared in an increasingly technological world. The

research has also changed the way scholars, policy-makers, and the public think about the experiences and

needs of girls and women. As mentioned in a previous LAF article, Crossing the Line: Sexual Harassment at

School is the latest study published by AAUW. The study was funded by The Eleanor Roosevelt Fund,

The Legal Advocacy Fund and The Mooneen Lecce Giving Circle. Crossing the Line presents new evidence on

sexual harassment, including cyber-harassment, in middle and high schools. It examines sexual harassment as

reported in a nationwide survey of students in grades 7-12 conducted in May and June 2011. To read and/or

download the report, go to the AAUW National website.

Board Briefs The following motion was passed by the Executive Committee as a recommendation to the Branch:

Motion was made by Carol Smith and seconded by Ellen Mathis that the branch dues for undergraduate

college and university students enrolled in accredited schools be set at a reduced rate of one-half of branch

dues.

Our Bylaws require that the membership must vote on any changes made to Branch Dues. Action will be

taken on the above motion at the April Branch meeting. You will find the bylaws reference in 2011-2012

Yearbook, Article V Financial Administration, Section 2, Amount of Dues .

Other Motions Made:

Motion was made by Ellen Mathis, that the Branch purchase a horizontal 3’x5’ and 18” x 24” podium sign

from AAUW with grommets. The motion was seconded by Kay Hudnall. The motion passed.

Motion was made by Fay Denny, that the Public Policy Committee be authorized to spend up to $100 to

purchase postcards advertising AAUW Long Beach and registering to vote in California elections. The motion

was seconded by Kay Hudnall. The motion passed.

Long Beach Branch STEM Career Conference (February 24, 2012)

Thank you to the many volunteers who helped make this year’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and

Math) Career Conference the most successful to date. Special thanks go to the chairs who oversaw the many

details: Darlene Daclan (Volunteers), Pat Ferrer (Facilities & Food), Norma Grady (Registration), and Deloris

Mayuga (Program). The conference, held at Long Beach City College Liberal Arts campus, began with keynote

speaker Emily Woodman-Nance telling the 7th and 8th grade girls about her experiences growing up and the

challenges she faced during her earlier years, including the death of her mother and grandfather, molestation

and date rape. She told the students that at a very young age she was determined that nothing would stop her

from achieving her goals. She also encouraged the girls to stay in school and finish their educations. Emily is

an Information Technology Consultant and Career Coach who has authored two books, hosted a talk radio

program on KUCI 88.9 F.M. and has been featured on a FOXLA Jobshop segment.

After the keynote address, the girls each attended two 40-minute workshops featuring women in STEM

careers. The workshops were presented by:

Meg Beatrice, Architect and owner of Architecture M

Kamaryn Casey, Veterinarian, Rose City Veterinary Hospital

Annie Duong, Chemical Engineer with BP West Coast Products

Annalisa Fernando, Optometrist with Darlyne Fujimoto, O.D. & Assoc.

Sandra Gonzalez, Landscape Architect, City of Long Beach

Taylor Hoang, Senior VP and Senior Financial Officer, Farmers and Merchants Bank

Pam Putnam, Deputy Coroner Investigator, San Bernardino County

Kathy Rantowich, Civil/Structural Engineer, MHP Structural Engineers

Carolyn Duclayan-Vizmanos, Public Health Nurse, Los Angeles County

Christine Whitcraft, Assistant Professor of Marine Biology, CSULB

214 girls, along with approximately 30 adult chaperones, attended the conference from the following

partnering agencies: Conservation Corps of Long Beach, Constellation Community Charter School (member:

Daphne Ching-Jackson), Franklin Classical Middle School (member: William Feliciano), Girl Scouts of Greater

Long Beach, Hill Classical Middle School, Jefferson Leadership Academies (member: Marisela Moreno) and

YMCA of Greater Long Beach.

For the donation of goody bag contents and the discounted use of facilities, we also wish to acknowledge Port

of Long Beach, AES California, Conservation Corps of Long Beach, Farmers & Merchants Bank, Long Beach

City College (member: Ginny Baxter), Long Beach Storm Water, Mario Hernandez of Union Bank, Museum of

Latin American Art, and Runner’s High. The Conference is a collaborative effort – one definitely appreciated

by the young women fortunate enough to attend. Their comments on their evaluation forms and the thank-

you notes they wrote to the speakers are testament to the value of this event. We look forward to seeing our

members out in force again in February 2013 for the 10th STEM Conference. Again, thank you!
