Weaknesses • Tackles had to be multiple

– Play 3 tech and 5 tech• Rovers had to be multiple

– Play OB and DE• Over front (5) was more complicated

if teams were multiple• Played under 80% of time

Page 9: Aaron Kunz Bullets 44 Defense (1)

Bullet Defensive Principals• Front four multiple (Stem and Stunt)• Very simple/ Gap control

– No confused players = faster players– Easy to adjust to multiple offenses

• Strong side and weak side players– Players get a great deal of reps in familiar

technique• Bend don’t break – not a huge blitzing

team• Zone coverage

Page 10: Aaron Kunz Bullets 44 Defense (1)

Bullet Defense Positions• Strong Side

– Tackle: Inside lineman– End: Outside lineman– Mike: Inside linebacker– Sam: Outside linebacker

• Defensive backs do not have strength– Right corner, Left corner, Free safety

• Weak Side– Nose: Inside

Lineman– Anchor: Outside

lineman– Will: Inside

linebacker– Rover: Outside

linebacker

Other Fronts and Stunts• Pinch – Tackle and Nose both play

shades• Stack Pinch – Tackle and Nose start

in 2 techs and pinch to “A” Gap• Over Head – End plays 8 technique• Strong Tag – Only Tackle Tags • Weak Tag – Only Nose Tags

Page 22: Aaron Kunz Bullets 44 Defense (1)

Blitzing• Blitz linebackers by names of

linebacker– If we want to send Mike we call Mike– Linebacker(s) called to go blitz their gap.– Stunts are created by stunts previously

talked about – Bounce, Tag, X, etc.– Possibilities are endless.– Limit to a small number each week

depending on game plan.

Pass Coverage – Cover 3• Cover receivers in area • Don’t cover green grass• Communication is key

• Out (Quick Out – within 5 yards)• Under (Quick In – Routes under ILB)• Dig (Deep in – 7+ yards)• Dog (Deep Out – 7 + yards)• Cross (Receiver crosses 1 deep zone into

another)• Vert – Vertical Route

Page 25: Aaron Kunz Bullets 44 Defense (1)

Adjustments to Spread• Do we need to adjust?

– Is a team in spread to run or throw?– Do we need another safety in the game?

• Is 4 verticals a real threat?• Where are they throwing the ball?

• Rover will move back and play safety.– 4-3 Look

• Vs Doubles (Cover 2 Read)• Vs Trips (¼ - ¼ - ½, with Will playing pass

strength)
