    Cigar store Indian tops Showtime auction at$94,400

    ANN ARBOR, Mich. A rare cigar storeIndian figure, beautifully carved in the1880s by the renowned artisan Samuel

    Robb, sold for $94,400 at a three-dayauction event held March 30-April 1 byShowtime Auction Services. The salewas held at the Washtenaw FarmCouncil Grounds, a venue that'sbecome the site of choice forShowtime Auction Services.

    The 5-foot-tall Indian chief figurehad much of its original paint still in-tact and was in overall excellentcondition. It was also the top lot

    of the sale.

    This was one of the best-looking cigar store figureswe've had the pleasure ofselling, said Mike Ecklesof Showtime Services, based in Woodhaven, Mich. Itwas no surprise to me that itcame close to the $100,000mark.

    The auction featured twoblockbusting headliners: the35-year collection of Al andPeg Araiza, collectors in manycategories; and Part 1 of the life-time pedal car and toy collectionof Ed and Christy Ramsey (Part2 will be sold Oct. 5-7, also byShowtime in Ann Arbor). Inall, over 2,000 lots of in-vestment-grade antiquesand collectibles changedhands over the weekend.

    It was the most diverseauction we've everhad, remarked Eckles, and also one of themost fun. It was greatto have all these collec-tors representingaround 60-70 categories all at oneevent. Everybody was just chatting, eating, drinking and generally having agood time. As for the auction itself, it

    was a huge success. Prices were ro-bust, in virtually all the categories.

    Following are additional highlights fromthe auction. Prices quoted include ei-ther a 10 percent buyer's premium forlive bidders; 13 percent for credit cardpurchases; or 18 percent for telephone

    A Rock Island Railroad reverse glasssign, 90 inches by 26 inches and say-ing: Rock Island Lines on the glass

    Bufffalo Brand Salted Peanutstwo-sided outdoor wood sandsign, 10 1/2 feet by 11 inches, possibly the only one in exis-tence, hit $26,400.

    A horse race wheel of fortune withvery rare reverse glass layout andtable (with an odds maker) went

    for $31,900. The wheelboasted reverse glasspainted panels, two of whichhad minor cracks. Otherwisethe piece was in excellentcondition. The table camewith a glass layout, rarelyseen, and the horses paintedon the glass matched thoseon the wheel.

    Shells Sold Everywherecloth banner, made by theAcme Sign Co. (Dayton,

    Ohio), 10 feet by 2 feet, withsome tattering at the edges, theonly one known, realized $22,420;

    the Meekin Can Co. (Cincin-nati) for David M. Zolla, Dis-tributor (Chicago) garnered$15,400.

    A Rock-Ola jukebox, Com-mando Model 1420, one ofthe most dramatic and col-

    orful of all the jukeboxesever produced, made$20,650. The reversepainted example withglass pilasters was nearly

    all original and had been nicely restoredby John Papa. Other jukeboxes sold in-cluded a Rock-Ola Model 1426, a Wurl-itzer Model 1400 and the popular
