Hello and welcome to the first EuroMed E&P conference on Offshore Services, Certification, Classification and Standards.

While the attention of most of us is focused on upstream developments in the East Mediterranean – drilling, discoveries, hydrocarbon reserves

– there exists behind all that the industry that makes it work. That’s what our conference is meant to examine today.

This is a complicated, highly technical and dangerous industry. To ensure smooth operations, performance is everything – especially if you want

results that lead to discoveries and the development of a profitable energy industry. To make that happen, engineers, technicians, scientists,

administrators, computer wizards, safety experts, welders, sailors, divers, pilots and more all play a role in bringing hydrocarbons to market.

Here in Cyprus the energy industry is still in its infancy. Three wells drilled and one gas discovery so far. We’re learning to be patient. But during

this period of upstream patience there is plenty to be done. If Cyprus is to someday fulfill its dream of becoming an important regional energy

station, then we need to build the industry that makes it all work.

A number of oil service companies and bureaus have already established themselves on the island. Today’s conference will examine if they find

the business environment here conducive to their requirements. What services do they need from the government and local business? How do

these companies work? How does their presence here benefit Cyprus and the wider region? Starting with almost no foundation in this industry,

can Cyprus build itself up to provide the hydrocarbon industry with the support structure it requires?

During the course of the conference we hope to answer some of these questions and draw insight from the experts speaking here today.

Enjoy the conference,

Gary Lakes
