DESCRIPTION
Airbus A380 Technical Training Manual (TTM)Full DocumentNew VersionThe first A380 technical manual, the "Airplane Characteristics for Airport Planning," was released this month. It can be consulted and/or downloaded from the A380 Family page on Airbus' web site at www.airbus.com. This is the first time a technical manual of this nature has been made available so early, some three years before the first flight of the aircraft. The Airplane Characteristics manual provides specific A380 data needed by airport authorities and planners to support the operation of the A380 within their airports. Data such as airplane dimensions, take off and landing distances, terminal operations data, taxiing, parking and pavement loading requirements are provided for the A380-800 and A380-800F, the passenger and freighter versions of the A380.Airbus has been working with planning teams from 50 major airports in five continents to ensure smooth handling of the A380 when it enters service in 2006 and the Airplane Characteristics manual is a major support for this.Following release of this first manual and up to entry into service of the A380, Airbus will deliver a full range of technical data for the maintenance, engineering, material support and flight operations departments of A380 airline customers. Technical data for the A380 will be available in electronic format according to the most recent aviation industry standards, which are more efficient and user friendly. They will be accessible through Airbus On Line Services, the Airbus portal for Customer Support.

APU ENGINE SYSTEM DESCRIPTION (2)System Architecture
Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) load gearbox and Accessory GearBox (AGB)are key elements of both APU lubrication and starting systems. The load gearbox drives the two generators and the dedicated oil pumpfor generator lubrication. The AGB is driven by the starter and drives the engine oil pumps. The APU starting system can be energized by the APU battery or fromthe A/C DC network (external power for ground operations).A single APU P/BSW, located on the overhead panel, is used for normalstart and shutdown. An emergency shutdown may be selected at either the Nose LandingGear (NLG) control panel or the Integrated Refuel Panel (IRP).The APU FIRE P/BSW on the overhead panel would also cause an APUshutdown, in addition to arming the APU fire extinguisher. The Electronic Control Box (ECB) controls and monitors APU start, operation and shutdown (normal and emergency).During the start sequence, the DC starter will drive the HP shaft of theAPU. The same drive through the AGB will also operate the Fuel ControlUnit (FCU) and the engine oil pump. The starter drive will be maintainedup to 40 % and then, the supply to the ignition system is removed. The APU has two igniter plugs which are used alternatively for eachAPU start, and are supplied by a high energy ignition unit. The APU shutdown can be classified as normal, automatic or emergency.During a normal shutdown, the ECB will immediately close the APUbleed valve, and initiate a cooling period of 60 seconds. The shutdownsequence is controlled based on time. It controls N1 speed reduction andInlet Guide Vanes (IGVs) opening. An automatic shutdown occurs following a fault condition. In this case,ECB has determined that a monitored parameter is outside the acceptablelimits or an APU component operation is not in the required configuration. On ground, an emergency shutdown will occur immediately followingan APU fire detection. In this case, all APU supplies (fuel and bleed air)
are shut immediately. In flight, the APU shutdown is selected by theflight crew.During an automatic or an emergency shutdown, there is no cool downperiod.

APU ENGINE SYSTEM DESCRIPTION (2)APU Oil System
The APU has two oil sub-systems:- the main engine section lubrication,- and the APU generators lubrication.Oil for both systems is stored in a single tank, which has separatecompartments for the generator section and the main engine section. The tank has common filler, which lets the generator section be filledfirst, and then the oil flows into the main engine section. In addition, the oil tank has two external oil level indicators: a sigh glassfor the main engine section and a bulls-eye for the generator section.
NOTE: Note: When checking or replenishing the APU oil system, it isimportant to refer to the AMM graph to establish if the oil levelusage against flight hours is within acceptable limits.
The APU is certified for either type 1 or type 2 oils. An oil filling tool isavailable for use at the tank.
NOTE: Note: The oil level may also be reported through the servicereport, and can be checked as correct through the CentralMaintenance System (CMS).
The APU oil system has filters for both sub-systems. The main enginesection filter is at the AGB and the generator system filter is at the loadgearbox. Both filters have a by-pass and are monitored for clogging.

APU ENGINE SYSTEM DESCRIPTION (2)APU Drain System
An APU overboard drain outlet is installed on the APU door. It isconnected to:- the AGB drain to collect fuel and oil,- the starter drain pad for oil,- the IGV actuator, surge control valve actuator, gas generator and eductordrains for fuel.Drains are also installed to drain water from the inlet plenum and theAPU exhaust.
NOTE: Note: Acceptable drain limits are given in the AMM.Following two or three successive APU shutdown sequences, it is possiblethat some drainage can be seen at the APU overboard drain outlet. After an APU auto-shutdown, the drains should be checked for fueldrainage. Refer to AMM or TSM for follow-up procedures.

APU BAYS LIGHTS & POWER OUTLETS DESCRIPTION (2)System Overview
The APU bays have two service lights:- one High Intensity Discharge (HID) light installed in the tail cone APUcompartment,- one Light Emitting Diode (LED) light installed in the air intake area ofthe APU and its above fireproof compartment. Each light is composed of:- a stainless steel housing,- a glass lens with steel grid cover,- one electrical connector and,- two halogen/LED bulbs. The service light for the tail cone APU compartment is controlled froma single toggle switch installed on the APU firewall. Whereas the servicelight for the air intake area of the APU and its above fireproofcompartment is controlled from a single toggle switch installed in thefuselage floor of the aircraft section 19, on the LH of the bay access door(311AB). The system also includes one 28 VDC power outlets to enableperformance of the maintenance tasks in this area. The service lights andthe power outlets are energized from the 28 VDC GND SVCE BUS.Human factor points:
WARNING: - BE CAREFUL WITH HOT COMPONENTS ANDSURFACES, THERE IS A RISK OF BURNING,- BE CAREFUL WITH MOVING SURFACES.
CAUTION: - MAKE SURE THAT YOU INSTALL THE CORRECTLAMPS IN THE APU COMPARTMENT, DO NOTINSTALL LED TYPE LAMPS BECAUSE THEY ARENOT RESISTANT TO HEAT.
