BlairRead article in OTAN NewsletterListening Assessment through Google VoiceMary Bizigos and Nilou Shokrani, ESL teachers from Palo Alto Adult School - pilot program they created at their school. They named their presentation “Using Google Voice to Evaluate Outside Oral Assessment Activities.” Working with their administrator, Bizigos and Shokrani provided their students a unique opportunity to demonstrate their ability to converse with community members while using Google Voice to record the conversation. 1. Students practiced conversations in the classroom to prepare for the activity. 2. When ready, they ventured out into the community. Each student presented an introductory letter to a member of the community and with approval, began the activity. 3. Using the student’s cell phone, the student called the teacher’s Google Voice number. Once the call was established and the message recorder was activated, the student began the interview. 4. Students were required to ask for information and then repeat that information back to the community member. 5. The interaction was recorded to the teacher’s Google Voice account. 6. Bizigos and Shokrani used a rubric to grade the student’s performance as they listened to the recording. This project demonstrates how the use of technology, along with creative thinking and

thorough planning, can enhance the learning experience and provide unique learning opportunities to our students.

WIOA allows new uses of technology, including the development or expansion of technology applications and digital literacy models. New focus - translation technology. Has potential to make the understanding of non-native languages much easier for learners.

Google Translate app (Google Play store) also allows translations using voice, keyboard, or handwriting.
