A Short History of St Anne’s Church Baslow

FOREWORD

This booklet, “A Short History of Baslow Church” was originally was compiled by a group of Baslow residents, whose signatures appear on Page six. Other evidence points to Mr C R Allcock as the leading author. He was headmaster of St Anne’s School Baslow from 1926 to 1934, and the book was probably compiled during this period Another contributor was H W Bloxham, the previous headmaster at the school. He was an ex serviceman and may well have initiated the project. “J Sheldon” also signed as a contributor. This was probably not the John Sheldon who subsequently become headmaster and wrote the book “A short history of Baslow. He lived elsewhere at the time. The booklet must have been in the school when John Sheldon became headmaster in 1934, and was certainly retained by him when he retired in 1970. During his retirement he wrote his “A Short History of Baslow” but it was unfinished when he died in 1977. The late Dr S. M. Evans completed the work and published it. He inherited various documents from Sheldon including this booklet, which was later found by his son Richard Evans and given to me. The copyright of the book is uncertain. The original has been presented to the Derbyshire County Records Office in Matlock with the agreement of all the parties mentioned above. The material can be freely copied for personal or scholarly use. There are at present no plans to publish the book. Copies have been given to the School and the Parochial Church Council, and there are several further copies in the village.
