St Anne’s Central School Newsletter Term 1 Week 10 2017

Easter is a time of hope and the promise of new life. When we reflect on our

wonderful school and the students and staff it is easy to be filled with hope.

We can be hope-filled by observing our younger students immersed in reading

their books or enthusiastically playing with their friends, the older students

laughing and enjoying each other's company and meeting the challenges of

learning. The end of term is a time to thank all the staff and parent volunteers

who work so hard to provide the best possible experience for students in their

care.

The Infants‘ garden group met again this week and plans are progressing well

to reinvigorate the Infants’ play area. You will soon see the first of several new

projects –watch this space!

Today we had our publishing parties. There was a real buzz around the

school as students acted like real authors sharing their creations with their

families.

Please support our Year 5 and 6 boys tomorrow morning as they contest the

other primary schools for the Stephen Bleyer Cup at The Recreation Ground

at 10.45am.

Please also join us for the annual Passion Play tomorrow at 2:30 pm. Each

year Mrs Scott and the students work hard to re-tell one of the most

well-known and important stories in a different way.

Primary Sport St Anne's conducted the annual cross country at Nixon park on Monday, in glorious conditions. With distances ranging from 2km to 6 km for Year 3-10 all students ran (or walked) to the best of their ability. In primary the first 5 places qualify to run for Western Region selection at Harden on Thursday 4th May, at the Harden Show-ground.

MacKillop AFL trials St Anne's had eight boys trialling for MacKillop AFL selection in Wagga last Friday. They were Callum Derrick, Noah Harper, Bayley Blackwell, Will Scott, Wilson Gaynor, Darcy Gaynor, James Godde and Hugh Warren. Congratulations to James who was selected to represent MacKillop AFL in Parkes next term.

The annual Stephen Bleyer Cup Rugby Union is on tomorrow at The Recreation Ground with the St Anne's team playing against the Temora West at 10.45am and then against Temora Public at 11.30am. Please come along and support the boys as they endeavour to retain the cup.

Secondary Cross Country

On Monday the 3rd

of April, Secondary students participated in the annual cross country event,

which was held at Nixon Park. Students all seemed to enjoy the day and the fantastic weather we

were blessed with. The following students were the top 5 runners in their age group and, as a result,

have qualified for the next level of competition. Stromlo will be held on the 17th

of May and more

information will be provided to these students in the near future. Congratulations to these students

on your achievement and to all of our students on your keen participation throughout the day!

NSWCCC Sport Registrations

Registrations are closing shortly for the following sports:

Netball (Closing date - 26th April) AFL - South (Closing date - 24th April)

AFL - North and Girls (Closing date - 28th April) Golf (Closing Date - 7th April)

Rugby (Closing Date 11th May) Basketball (Closing Date 1st May)

If you would like to register, please do so through the NSWCCC website. Once you have applied for the event,

I will receive your expression of interest and will give you an information package. Please remember that

transport to these events is the responsibility of the student, as these are individual trials.

Upcoming Secondary Sporting Events

Athletics Carnival (Nixon Park) – 1st of May – More information regarding this event will be in future newsletters.

The remaining 800m and 1500m events will be held during sport of Week 1, Term 2. Javelin events will be held

during lunch time of Week 1.

Archdiocesan 15s Touch Trials (Cootamundra) – 3rd

of May [see Mr Kitchingman for an information and applica-

tion package, cost for registration is $15. It is up to the student to organise transport as these are individual

trials]

Netball Gala Day (Young) – 15th of May [expressions of interest were due Friday of Week 8, please hand them

in ASAP so travel and overall costs can be established. The second and final note will be distributed on the first

day of Term 2.

ANZAC DAY

This year ANZAC Day falls on a Tuesday the day before students return to school for Term 2,

Wednesday 26th April 2017.

All students and families are invited to attend the ANZAC Day Parish Mass commencing at 9.30 am

on that day.

After the completion of Mass, students are asked to assemble in

front of the police station.

Students who do not attend the Mass but are participating in the

march are asked to arrive by 10.30 am.

All students are asked to wear their full winter school uniform.

My Visit to St. Anne’s Central School

Pulling up outside St. Anne’s Central School, I felt that I was about to walk into a place of great heritage and

tradition. I bumped into the gardener, John Goode who was attending the spectacular aged roses out the front of

the School. I was so impressed by the expertise he expressed as he spoke with great pride about the school

grounds. I was then met with an enthusiastic welcome from Virginia at the front desk. The offer of a cuppa after

the long drive made me feel so welcome and confirmed that the virtue of hospitality was truly evident at St.

Anne’s.

The purpose of my visit was to collect data by talking to a few students from Years 7 to 10 about their experiences

in learning RE at St. Anne’s Central School.

We started with the Year 10 students who were very excited about planning the Easter Pageant. Their obvious

strength in faith invigorated their description of the plans for the event. They spoke about the Service activities

they have participated in throughout the wider community and they expressed their awareness of the need for

justice in the world and how they wanted to have more opportunities to actively seek to transform it.

The Year 8 and Year 9 students followed and concluded that class discussions were a popular method of teaching

RE; they agreed it was the best way to learn. One student stated, “It’s good when the teacher unpacks the story

and explains the morals and the real story behind it”. I posed the question, “What if someone still doesn’t under-

stand?” They shrugged their shoulders and said, “Well you just ask more questions!” There was a strong sense

that each classroom was an environment where each student felt safe to ask questions and were encouraged to

contribute in the discussions. There was a strong feeling of not only self-respect but they revealed a solid sense

of family and respect for one another. I noticed that the set-up of the classrooms at St. Anne’s were conducive to

this kind of learning.

They all spoke of the importance of prayer; especially Christian Meditation. “It just gives you a chance to relax –

to connect with God. After recess everyday there is music over the speaker - so we just lay on the floor or some-

thing and just…relax”.

I also had the privilege of attending St. Anne’s Opening Mass. I was amazed by the engagement, reverence and

enthusiasm the students displayed. When I asked about the spirit exhibited at the School Masses, they were eager

to respond with reasons why they enjoy going to School Mass…”Yeah – everybody sings!”. “Father Simon and

Father Trenton are cool – and his homilies are good; and usually short!”. Another student commented, “He is

someone who really knows stuff”.

The Year 7 students revealed their interest to study other religions as well as their own. They love all the re-

sources the teachers use; especially the ones that are ‘hands-on and use multi-media”.

All the students I spoke to in the interviews and in the playground demonstrated a special charisma that is

particular to St. Anne’s Central School. It is a spirit of family, a gentle but unapologetic strength of faith, a spirit of

respect for every person in their community; especially the marginalised. A spirit of hospitality, where everyone is

not only welcomed, but heard. A spirit of love where hearts are nurtured by the wisdom of the teachers and the

wider community. A spirit of humour where the spirituality of the students is expressed and they feel accepted. I

left the School feeling very privileged in talking to the students at St. Anne’s Central School. I know the light and

love they reflect in their hearts will bring hope to the future of this world. Thank you to the students, the staff, Mrs

Scott and Mrs Holding for allowing me to visit your School. I realise now that St. Anne’s Central School is not only

filled with history and tradition, but is also filled with a strong sense of love, hope and faith.

Teacher name: Rebecca Zietsch (like peach)

Qualifications: Bachelor of Teaching (Primary)/Bachelor of Early Childhood Studies.

Work History: Started out at McDonald’s whilst at school like any other kid, and then once I

completed my degree started working in catholic primary schools within the Diocese of Bro-

ken Bay.

Interests: My interests involve shopping and spending time with my family. I also enjoyed

playing netball when I was younger.

Favourite Movie: Has to be any movie by Nicolas Sparks. (The Notebook, A Walk to Re-

member, The Choice etc)

Favourite Food: Has to be my mum’s home cooked chicken carbonara dish or her home

cooked curried sausages.

Where did you grow up: I grew up on the central coast and have called the coast home until moving to Temora. I have also

lived in the same house all my life.

What do you believe helps students to learn: I believe that a positive and safe environment helps students with concurring

their learning. I also believe that building a strong relationship with each student benefits their outlook on learning. Having a

learning environment that is full of stimuli also helps students take control of their learning.

Favourite sporting team: I don’t really follow sports but as a Novocastrian I think I have to barrack for the Newcastle Knights.

As a little girl I remember my family attending a Newcastle Knights game and we were all we cheering for the Knights. My

younger sister turned around and said she goes for the days. I will always remember this when someone asks me what

team I go for.

RE News

Sacrament of Confirmation Next term on Sunday 28th may we will celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation. We pray for those Year 6 students preparing for this special Sacrament and their families,. A reminder that the Confirmation parent/child information night is on Thursday 4th May starting at 7pm in the hall. There will be a note going home first week back with more details. If you are unable to attend you will need to contact Fr Simon at the presbytery.

Passion play Everyone is welcome to Year 9/10 presentation of the Passion Play tomorrow at 2.30pm in the church. Year 9/10 have been working hard all week and they look forward to sharing this play with you all.

Anzac Day Mass All students and their families are invited to attend the Anzac Day Mass on Tuesday 25th April in the church starting at 9.30am. Today, those students who have a special in the mass received a note with details about what time and where to meet. After the mass we will walk over to meet the others for the march.
