  • A RUDE AWAKENING

The year is 199X. In the town of Onett, Eagleland, a boy named Ness sleeps soundly. Suddenly, the sound of something huge crashing into the nearby hilltop wakes him up. You take control of Ness from this point on.

  • In your sister's room you'll find a gift box with a Cracked Bat in it. This is your first weapon. Equip it and go downstairs.

Your mom is too scared to see what the noise was, and if you talk to her she asks you not to go out. But she knows you'll still go out anyway, so she makes you change out of your pajamas into regular clothes. Note that if you don't talk to her you can go outside in your pajamas.

Now that you're outside, you'll find the nearby area swarming with police officers blocking the road and complaining about their lives, the local ruffians, or whatever else they have on their minds.

  • As you make your way up the hilltop, you'll find Lier X. Agerate. As his name suggests, you shouldn't believe everything he says, but you'll meet him again later on, so remember where his house is.

At the top of the hill you'll find Pokey, who's trying to get a look at the meteorite that crashed only a short while ago. Talk to him, and he'll tell you to go back home. When you do, you'll find your mom waiting for you. Talk to her and she'll make you go back to bed.

Later that night, you're woken up by an annoying knocking sound. It sounds like somebody's knocking at the front door. Just as you go to see who it is, Pokey busts through. He tells you that his brother Picky got lost and if he doesn't find him, his parents will really punish him. He forces you to look for Picky with him, regardless of what you say. Talk to your mom and change out of your pajamas.

  • Before you leave, you can also talk to your dog, King, if you want him to join your

party. He's not very strong, but you'll appreciate his help during the first few battles.

Now talk to Pokey. If you haven't equipped the Cracked Bat already, he'll give you some helpful advice on how to. He'll then join your party. Just as you're about to leave the house, the phone will ring. Pick it up. You'll talk to your Dad for the first time. He'll explain how to save your game and how to withdraw/deposit money from your bank account. Once he hangs up, talk to Tracy to get a free Cookie, then leave the house.

Outside, you'll find that all the police officers and curious onlookers are gone. Instead, you'll be attacked by dogs, crows, and snakes as you walk around. You should stay near your house and gain a few levels. At Level 2 you'll gain PSI Lifeup α, but it wouldn't hurt to gain a few more to be on the safe side.

  • Be careful of Spiteful Crows when walking around - they can steal your items in battle. But they also always drop Cookies after you defeat them, so go for them if you need food. If you want to gain levels as quickly as possible, go for the Runaway Dogs. They have the most experience points of all three kinds of enemies in this area.

At the top of the hill, by the meteor, you'll find Picky taking a nap. Talk to him, and he'll wake up and join your party. As you walk past the meteorite, Pokey hears a strange noise, like a buzzing sound. Then a bright light comes out of the meteorite and a bee appears. But it's no ordinary bee - it can talk!

The bee tells you that his name is Buzz Buzz and that he's from 10 years in the future. He says there's a prophecy that tells of three boys and a girl who will defeat Giygas, the all-evil entity that has destroyed the world in the future. He then tells you that he believes you're one of those boys, and joins your party.

  • While you walk down the hill to take Picky and Pokey back home, you'll notice that all the enemies are gone. But, just as you start to approach their house, the sky will flash and a Starman robot will block the way. He's come to get rid of Buzz Buzz and stop your plans for saving the world. After a little bit of talking, a battle ensues.

This battle is relatively simple, although at first it might seem overwhelming. Even though Ness is still very weak and Starman Jr. uses some really powerful PSI, you don't need to worry because Buzz Buzz will protect you with PSI Shields. In fact, you don't even need to attack Starman Jr. - Buzz Buzz will do that for you too! Basically, there's no way to lose this fight, even if you do nothing.

When you return Picky and Pokey to their house, you'll find their parents waiting for them. After the kids get punished, their mother gets scared of Buzz Buzz and swats him.

  • With his last breath, Buzz Buzz explains that you need to visit the eight "Your Sanctuary" spots and collect their melodies using the Sound Stone that he gives you. Then he fades away.

If you fill up your inventory to the max with items like Cookies, Buzz Buzz will

give the Sound Stone to Escargo Express to hold for you. Even if you don't have the Sound Stone in your inventory, you can still play the game normally. But this way you can free up an extra spot in your inventory that would otherwise be useless for almost the entire game!

SHARK BAIT THINGS TO SEE AND DO:

    - At Beak's Point is a vacant house for sale. You can't afford it now, but come back later. - Talk to everyone you meet! Go into all the buildings, even the shops. This is EarthBound! - Garbage cans can have useful food items! Check 'em!

After you step outside of Pokey's house and it dawns in Onett, go back to your house and take a rest to re-energize. (The camera man will come down when you try to go back into your yard.) Your next destination should be the Library. Just follow the path down and right from Ness's house and you'll get there. Get the town map from the clerk, it's useful for reference and you can dump it in Escargo Express later if you don't want it.

    http://walkthrough.starmen.net/earthbound/onett1.php#starmanjunior#starmanjuniorhttp://walkthrough.starmen.net/earthbound/onett1.php#starmanjunior#starmanjuniorhttp://starmen.net/mother2/ebdb/enemies.php?enemy=213

  • Then go outside the library and just left to it, near the scuzzy-looking guy. There's a secret clubhouse there - you can just see the top of it poking out of the trees behind the library. Stand directly down from it and walk up through the trees and go in and talk to the kids. One of them will give you the Mr. Baseball Cap. Equip it.

Fight enemies around your house until you're at Level 4. You should also revisit Liar X. Agerate's while you're at it - he'll show you something important. When you're to level 4, go home and call your dad. Once you have $130 in your ATM account, go into town, visit the drugstore (labeled 'SHOP' on the town map) and buy and equip the Tee Ball Bat (sell the Cracked Bat after you do) and the Cheap Bracelet.

Now you're ready to fight the Sharks south of the drugstore. They're tough at

low levels when they gang up on you, so try to fight only one at a time. If you approach two or three hanging around together, inch toward them and as soon as the first one starts chasing, run a full screen away and then turn and fight it. You should be able to fight it alone. Once you're at around Level 6 you can start fighting multiple Sharks at once.

  • You should stockpile five or six Hamburgers (you'll get them from Pogo Punks). You'll need them later. If you start to get more burgers than that, start eating them to recover HP. Don't be afraid to use Lifeup whenever your HP goes below 30 or so. When you run out of PP, go home and rest to get it restored. You want to be at level 8 when you fight Frank.

When your level is high enough (Level 7 or 8 is best, but 6 is fine too), go into the arcade and fight the Sharks in there. Talk to the one guarding the door and say "No" to his question. He'll fight you. After you've beaten him, eat Hamburgers to replenish your HP and then go through the door he was guarding. Now it's time to fight Frank.

Level 8 or Higher: One PSI Rockin' α should do the trick. If not, Bash him a few times and he'll croak. Level 6 or 7: Bash early and often. Don't bother with Hypnosis. Heal yourself when your HP goes below 40. His knife attack can deal up to 40 HP damage. Below Level 6: You're not ready to fight Frank yet. Level up at least to 6 and preferably to 8.

  • After you beat Frank, you'll have to fight Frankystein Mark II. If you have enough PP, use PSI Rockin α right away. He'll waste his first turn generating steam and then every other round after that. With the other rounds, he'll either throw a punch (10-20 HP damage) or tear into you (30-45 HP damage). So keep your HP over 45. Use the fact that you know he'll waste his attacks to your advantage.

After you defeat Frank, a nice, fast way to rest yourself up (just like a hotel

or home) is to talk to him behind the arcade. He'll offer to let you rest and you'll be revitalized! Too bad everyone isn't a good loser like he is.

  • If you tried to visit Giant Step earlier, you'll know that the cabin leading to it was locked because of Frank and that the mayor has the key. Go to city hall (in the center of town), head for the second floor, and talk to the mayor. Provided you promise not to get him in trouble, he'll hand over the Key to the Shack.

Now make for Giant Step and use the key to unlock the shack door. After you unlock it, talk to the guys in red again and one of them will give you the Travel Charm. Now you can go in and start making your way through the first challenging area of the game. Make sure you're stocked with five or six Hamburgers and have completely full HP and PP before you enter.

There are three different enemies inside the cave. Attack Slugs attack at up to six at a time but are extremely weak. Single them out for easy experience and use Auto-Fight. Rowdy Mice are dangerous because they can SMAAAAASH you for 10-13 HP of damage, but they always attack alone. The most dangerous enemy is the Black Antoid, which will usually pop you for 10-13 HP each turn. When faced with a mixture of these enemies, kill Antoids first.

  • There is a little point during which you step outside of the cave as you're making

your way through it. Here, you can find an infinite supply of Magic Butterflies, which restore a sweet 20 PP each! So if you don't see a butterfly when you step outside, or if you've already collected it, pop back in the right-hand entrance and then back out and repeat until your PP is full! This is very helpful for the battle against the upcoming boss.

Keep going and you'll find the first "Your Sanctuary" boss. Fire off PSI Rockin α until you no longer have enough PP to use it. He'll suck the rest of your PP out with PSI Magnet, so you have to rely on food to keep your HP up. After your PSI assault, bash him and eat every time your HP dips below 50 - his biting attack can do 45 HP of damage. The rest of his attacks don't harm you. If you run out of food, just bash and hope for luck.

Now you can go beyond the door and out to Giant Step, the first "Your Sanctuary" location. The melody will play and your Sound Stone will record it. Now you need to head back down to Onett, but don't worry - after you defeat a "Your Sanctuary" boss, all the regular enemies will run away from you and you can surprise attack them! This is a great way to gains levels if you use it to your advantage.

    POLICE BRUTALITY

When you finally step out of the cave and back into Onett, you're going to be greeted by an unhappy police officer who'll demand that you go to the Onett police station later. As you'll soon find out, you don't really have a choice if you want to continue your adventure.

If you tried to visit southern Onett earlier, you ran into some roadblocks and police officers blocking the path to Twoson. You need to go there, however, to continue your adventure. It'd be a good idea to go to the police station and try to convince them to remove the roadblocks.

    http://walkthrough.starmen.net/earthbound/giantstep.php#titanicant#titanicanthttp://walkthrough.starmen.net/earthbound/giantstep.php#titanicant#titanicanthttp://starmen.net/mother2/ebdb/enemies.php?enemy=36

  • Before you go to the police station, it's a good idea to go home and rest. If you don't have four or five hamburgers in reserve, go to the burger shop and replenish your supply. Then go to the police station and talk to Captain Strong. He'll tell you to follow him if you want to go to Twoson.

Surprise! The Onett cops are out to teach you a lesson in the most brutal fashion. Turn the tables on them! Use PSI Rockin on the cops if you need to. Be sure to keep your HP up over 35 - their crushing chop attacks can do that much damage. Use a Hamburger or Lifeup to recover HP. If you're lucky, a cop or two might leave a burger after you beat them. You'll have to fight four cops before fighting Captain Strong, so be ready!

After the fifth cop runs away, Captain Strong himself will challenge you. His submission hold can deal up to 50 HP of damage, so make sure you keep your HP as high as you can. Feel free to unleash PSI Rockin on him. Two shots should do him in. If you don't have the PP, bashing should be fine. After you beat Strong, he'll order his cops to let you past the roadblocks. Now you can head south to Twoson.

  • On the way to Twoson, you'll find a small house in which live the "Exit Mice". It's a good idea to pick one up and take it with you. If you're desperate in a cave or maze later, you can use it to get out fast. Drop a food item if you need to make space.

Beware of the Ramblin' Evil Mushrooms that'll attack you along the way - if they

"mushroomize" you, you'll soon be unable to walk quite right. The control buttons will change, i.e., when you hit Up, you will walk left instead, etc. Rotate the controller right each time the controls change to better move around. What's worse, though, is that you may become confused and attack yourself in battle if you're mushroomized!

If you do become mushroomized, don't fret! Turn around and head

back to Onett. Go to the hospital and talk to the blue-haired healer there. Not only will he relieve you of the mushroom, but he'll pay YOU $50 for it! It's not a bad way to make money. You can also do this at all other hospitals in the game.

  • The citizens in Twoson are abuzz about the recent kidnapping of Paula, a local (and very special, as you'll soon find out) girl. Go to the Polestar preschool where she lives and talk to her parents. Her mom isn't worried and her dad apparently isn't aware that she's missing, even though the rest of Twoson is. Don't forget to grab the Teddy Bear from upstairs!

The suspicious-looking people in Burglin Park talk about their boss, Everdred. He's waiting for you atop his house, but beware! He'll make you fight, and he can be pretty tough. Just make sure you're at close to full power before you approach him. For an easy battle, use PSI Rockin alpha 2 or 3 times. For a harder one, use bash and keep your HP up over 50 or so. (Note: Everdred will steal food from you if you're carrying it.)

A good place to build up your levels a little is the long street leading south of town. You'll be attacked by various drunks, cranky ladies, hippies and others as you walk up and down this street. They're fairly easy to defeat and you should be able to build 3 or 4 levels fairly quickly by fighting them. If you get low on energy just return north and sleep at the hotel. For a great moneymaking scheme see the Twoson guide.

  • If you try to take a bus to Threed, you're in for a surprise -- it's not going to be that easy! Just when you think you've made it, the music will freak out and you'll find yourself back in Twoson. Hey, isn't there a girl you should rescue first anyway?

There are two kid inventors asking for $200 in funding, Orange Kid and Apple Kid. Orange Kid will give you the pretty-useless Suporma, but Apple Kid will help you for the rest of the game, so give the money to him. He'll also ask you for food. If you don't want to give him a good food item, buy a condiment in Burglin Park for $2 or $3 and he'll accept it. Then give him the money. His pet mouse will give you the Receiver Phone as a reward.

When you feel you're up to it, rest up to full power, get a Teddy Bear or two, and then head east to the cave. Work your way through, fighting off the Mobile Sprouts that attack you. Once on the other side of the cave, you won't get far, because a giant iron pencil (why not?) will be in your way. You don't have any other choice, so head back to Twoson. Apple Kid will give you a call when you get there.

  • Apple Kid's not at his house, but Orange Kid will inform you that he's at Burglin Park (one of the few useful things he does in the whole game). Specifically, he's resting near a tree in the southwest corner of the park, near Everdred's house. When you find him, he will give you the Pencil Eraser, which (as you probably guessed) is your ticket past the iron pencil statue.

    A NOT-SO PEACEFUL REST

The Peaceful Rest Valley presents the first truly tough challenge you will face. The enemies here are tough and it's a long, winding road, and it's easy to get worn down. Before you return to use the Pencil Eraser, sleep again at the hotel to power yourself up, and make sure you have at least two Teddy Bears handy. A few Hamburgers can help, too.

Before you go into Peaceful Rest Valley, or any other dangerous place

in the game, deposit most of your money into your ATM account. If you are defeated in battle along the way, you will be sent back to the last point at which you saved. You will keep the exp. you earned, but your cash on hand will be cut in half. The cash in your ATM account, however, will remain the same. So don't take chances with your money!

    http://walkthrough.starmen.net/earthbound/twoson1.php#everdred#everdredhttp://walkthrough.starmen.net/earthbound/twoson1.php#everdred#everdredhttp://starmen.net/mother2/ebdb/enemies.php?enemy=109

  • Try to avoid the moving tree enemies. They're Territorial Oaks, and although not tough to beat, they'll burst into flames when you do defeat them. This will destroy any Teddy Bears you have and/or deal you mortal damage. You can still survive as long as the YOU WON! message comes up before you run out of HP, but it's not worth the trouble. If you do get involved in a fight with it, run away. It might take a few tries but don't attack it!

The other enemies in Peaceful Rest Valley are tough but manageable if your level is around 15 or so. The Lil' UFO will dodge many of your Bash attacks, plus PSI Rockin' doesn't work on it very much. Save it for last if you can and dispatch enemies that are easier to defeat first. The Spinning Robo can do a lot of damage, so try to destroy it first. Also, both enemies can give you a cold! Use a Cold Remedy or Healing α if they do.

Mobile Sprouts are good enemies to pick on for exp. at this point because they're fairly weak, but beware! Their PSI Magnet can quickly drain your vital PP from you. If you have a Teddy Bear, though, it will usually harmlessly absorb the magnet attack. Also, Sprouts tend to hang around with Territorial Oaks, so be careful when approaching them.

  • Make sure you get the Hard Hat. This is an extremely valuable defensive item. After you cross a bridge, the path will lead you northward and then split to the left and right. Go left here and walk a little ways and you will find a present with the Hard Hat inside. If you're out of inventory space, sell or drop the Mr. Baseball cap. Make sure you equip your new item!

If you bought the For Sale Sign from the guy in Burglin Park, you can use it

to sell your items off whenever you want. By this point, you'll probably have a few items that are just taking up space, so try using the For Sale Sign to get rid of 'em!

Use the magic butterfly trick to keep PP up. There is a magic butterfly just before the left-right fork in the road that will re-appear if you leave that screen and return repeatedly.

  • When you're almost to Happy Happy Village, you will see on your right an isolated cabin. You can't reach it now, but it will be important very soon. Keep it in mind.

    CRACKING THE CULT

THINGS TO SEE AND DO: - As soon as you arrive, buy the Sandlot Bat and save the game. - Visit the hotel by the blue cow to freshen up after your lengthy trek. - A few croissants from the drugstore will be good to have on hand. - If you donate to the woman asking for donations, you'll get a postcard. If you don't, she'll stalk you. - Knock on one of the doors and you'll see some really crazy text. It's a stray Mr. Saturn!

The citizens here are all acting very strange and the whole town is painted blue. What's going on with all this? To find answers, you should seek out Paula and the cult's leader.

You can pay (or, if you wish, not pay) whatever you want for Fresh Eggs at

the self-service stand. There is an Unassuming Local Guy monitoring the stand, but that's the only security. This is the perfect chance to use the Fresh Egg trick to rake in some dough.

    http://walkthrough.starmen.net/earthbound/tips_tricks.php#moneyhttp://walkthrough.starmen.net/earthbound/tips_tricks.php#money

  • A quick way to level up at this point in the game is to fight an Insane Cultist, wait

until he calls for friends in battle, and then defeat him. Then wait for the others to call friends, then defeat them. Repeat until you're bored. This will net you tons of experience in a short amount of time! Be sure to try this on other enemies that call for help, too!

If you go into the small cave in the north of the village, you will come upon the cabin that you passed on your way here. This cabin is where Paula, who has been sending you psychic messages, is being held prisoner. When you talk to her, she will explain that she knew you would come and save her, and more importantly, she will give you the Franklin Badge, which you will need to fight Carpainter.

If you go into the cave in the east of the village, near the drugstore, you will find a much larger cave. This leads to the second "Your Sanctuary" location. It is recommended that you wait until you rescue Paula to plunge deeper into this cave, but if you want, you can go in with only Ness. If you intend to do so, skip ahead a little in this walkthrough.

  • Step inside Happy-Happyism Headquarters and you'll be greeted by a massive number of Insane Cultists. Don't panic! They won't come after you. They're entranced, swaying slowly back and forth. You'll soon notice that they're blocking your path. Talk to the ones moving slightly faster and they'll move (sometimes after a fight) for you. Consult this map for details.

Once you get past all the cultists, you'll find their leader, Mr. Carpainter, upstairs with a strange statue that you might recognize. Carpainter is actually a weak boss. Just bash him and keep your HP over 40, or for a quick fight use PSI Rockin' a few times. The Franklin Badge will reflect his lightning attacks back at him and damage him instead! You can also use Paralysis on him for an easy battle.

The Franklin Badge is an extremely useful item -- make sure you hold onto it

throughout the game. It will reflect any electrical attacks aimed at the person who's carrying it, protecting them and damaging the attacker.

    http://walkthrough.starmen.net/earthbound/image/maps/happyhappyhq.png

  • After you defeat Carpainter, he'll explain that he's been acting strangely ever since he got the golden statue, which he calls the Mani-Mani statue. He'll apologize and give you the Key to the Cabin. Now high-tail it back to Paula and set her free! She'll join your party and bring her Teddy Bear with her. Paula is at Level 1 and extremely weak. Go straight to the drugstore and get her a Fry Pan, Copper Bracelet, and Ribbon.

    A SPOT OF SPELUNKING

After you've rescued and equipped Paula, it's time to check out that cave near the drugstore that contains the "anti-blue" place the fellow standing near it mentions. This place is actually the location of the second of the eight "Your Sanctuary" locations. Go rest up at the hotel (it's free after you knock off Carpainter!) and then go ahead and plunge in.

    http://walkthrough.starmen.net/earthbound/hhvillage.php#mrcarpainter#mrcarpainterhttp://walkthrough.starmen.net/earthbound/hhvillage.php#mrcarpainter#mrcarpainterhttp://starmen.net/mother2/ebdb/enemies.php?enemy=25

  • Paula is extremely weak when you first rescue her. You'll need to build her levels. When you first step inside the cave to the Lilliput Steps and walk up, you should encounter a Mole Playing Rough. If you don't, exit the cave and re-enter again until you do. Fight this enemy repeatedly (exit and re-enter after each fight) until you've built Paula up to level 8 or so. Otherwise, Paula runs the risk of being killed when you fight stronger enemies.

The path branches off early on in the expedition, making you choose to go down or left. Go down first and you will find the Great Charm. Unlike the Travel Charm, it increases your speed by 5 when you equip it, plus it increases your defense by 1, so it's worth eqipping. Equip it on Paula since she needs all the defensive help she can get.

There's a special butterfly spot here similar to the one at Giant Step. After you reach the right side of the cave and then go up and left, you'll reach a clearing. There might be a Magic Butterfly there. If there isn't, go back about a screen's length and then return and try again. You can use this method to get as many butterflies as you want. Cast Lifeup to recover everyone's HP, get the butterfly to restore 20 PP, and repeat as needed.

  • When you find the Shining Spot that marks the Sanctuary Boss, take a moment and recover your HP with food or PSI lifeup, and then go ahead and mix it up. Of course, you can fight Mondo Mole the hard way, but why bother? Use PSI Paralysis on your first turn to render him helpless, and you can defeat him easily.

After you defeat Mondo Mole and collect the second melody, return to Happy Happy Village, fighting all the enemies you see (they'll run away, giving you a surprise opening attack) to build experience, and then head back to Twoson. The enemies in the Peaceful Rest Valley will be much easier to defeat now (but still stay away from the trees), and a man has repaired the broken bridge, making it much easier to get through the valley.

    HOMEWARD BOUND

Paula's parents have been worried about her. Make haste and take her back to the Polestar Preschool. Her dad will allow her to go with Ness on their adventure, and her mom will supply you with her Hand-Aid, an item that will completely restore one person's HP when used. Hold on to it, as it will be more useful much later in the game, but keep it at hand in case of an emergency.

    http://walkthrough.starmen.net/earthbound/lilliput.php#mondomole#mondomolehttp://walkthrough.starmen.net/earthbound/lilliput.php#mondomole#mondomolehttp://starmen.net/mother2/ebdb/enemies.php?enemy=40

  • When you step out of Paula's house, one of the henchmen from Burglin Park will inform you that Everdred is looking for you. When you find him, he'll explain that he wanted you to be his partner but he knew you would refuse. So instead, he just hands you a wad of bills -- $10,000 worth, to be exact. Who knows how he got it or why he can't keep it, but don't ask questions. Whatever could you do with $10,000?

If you talked to the Runaway Five earlier, you know that they're stuck in a phony contract with the Chaos Theater. Also, one of the band members really wants to see Paula and just might reward you if you bring her to see him. So, head for the Chaos Theater and talk to the Runaway Five (by the bus). Lucky will be so enthralled to see Paula that he'll give you a Backstage Pass as a reward -- a very valuable item since the tickets are all sold out.

If you offer the theater manager the Wad of Bills, he'll insist on waiting until after the concert to talk about money. So use your backstage pass to get in and talk to everyone inside. One girl will make you take her with you into the dressing room, where you can talk to the band about their debt. It seems they're exactly $10,000 in debt -- where have you seen that kind of money? Hmmm. After the show, their manager will be willing to talk.

  • After the concert is over, exit the concert hall and go back to the manager. If you offer him the Wad of Bills, he will say "Let me take a reeeeeal close look." So walk around his desk and stand next to him, and then offer him the money. Money talks, and the manager will free the Runaway Five from their debt.

Now leave the theater. The Runaway Five's tour bus will be waiting outside, and they'll offer you a ride to Threed on it. It's way too loud for them to even notice ghosts! But before you step on the bus, make sure you've done everything you want in Twoson, because you'll be in Threed for a good while. It might be a good idea to stock up on Teddy Bears to help out in Threed. Once you feel you're ready, hop on the bus and you're off to Threed!

If you don't get into the tour bus right away and walk around instead, you'll soon

see that there are no random enemies at all, wherever you go! Use this chance to explore places you might've skipped before. And if you didn't beat Mondo Mole yet, you can get to him without encountering any other enemies!

    ZOMBIES ATE MY HEROES

THINGS TO SEE AND DO: - There's a Teddy Bear in the trash can by the Hint Shop in the northeast. - The town is very dark and gloomy. Talk to everyone to learn more about why the town is in such a ghastly state. - The huge tent at the center of town is the Zombie Relief Corps HQ. This tent will become important later on. - A man in the Twoson hospital left something at the Threed hospital. Check the drawers to find it. - Use Escargo Express when you first arrive. Store the Backstage Pass and anything else you no longer need. - You can try going through the tunnels leading out of town, but the ghosts will stop you. You're stuck here for a while. - The graveyards in the northern part of town are infested with ghouls. They're good for leveling up, but they're tough.

After you've stocked up on items at the drugstore and rested up if necessary, head into the graveyard in the northwest corner of town. The enemies here can be very powerful and tend to attack in teams, so don't hesitate to use powerful PSI attacks against them. Go to the northwest corner of the graveyard and then follow the little path at the top. You'll run into two zombies who, instead of attacking you, will stare straight into your soul.

  • Fight your way back out of the graveyard and head back to the hotel. Something's different when you get there, though. There is a strange woman hanging around outside who will go inside when you approach her, and a man nearby who will tell you about her. Follow her inside and into the hotel room, and -- SURPRISE! -- you will be attacked and knocked out by the zombies.

When you wake up, you'll find yourself in a strange underground prison, and the door is hopelessly locked. When you think you're stuck and things couldn't get worse, Paula will pause and call out to a new friend you haven't met before, and the scene will shift to Winters, in a country to the north...

    CALL TO ACTION

After receiving Paula's psychic call for help, Jeff will wake up and you will take control of him. When you try to leave the room, his best friend and roommate, Tony, will awaken and, after warning you about the rules, join you. He mentions some stuff in the locker room that you should get.

Next door to Jeff and Tony's room, there are a bunch of presents wrapped up for Tony's birthday party. They all contain Cookies. Take them with you, as they'll be valuable once Jeff is outside. Feel free to drop the Ruler and Protractor (they are useless), but hang onto the other three items he starts with.

  • Downstairs, you will find Maxwell Labs, the resident scientist at Snow Wood Boarding House. He won't mind your being up and about despite the rules; in fact, he'll help you out by offering a key to open the lockers in the next room with.

When you try to use the key on the locker, you will quickly find it useless, because it's bent and won't fit into the key hole! You should definitely take the key back to Maxwell and explain the situation. He'll laugh and explain that he knew the key wouldn't work, and proceed to give you his invention, the "Machine that Opens Doors, Especially When You Have A Slightly Bad Key", or "Bad Key Machine" for short.

Now you can open up the lockers in the locker room. Three of the lockers contain valuable items, the Pop gun and Holmes hat (Which you should equip right away) and the Broken Air Gun, which you can fix later on to make a powerful weapon.

  • Now that you're outfitted for your adventure, step outside of the building. Tony will help give you a boost over the gate so you can escape and head south, as Paula directed. Make the drugstore your first destination.

    SOUTHWARD JOURNEY

You'll notice that you can't use the ATM machine (because Jeff doesn't have Ness's ATM card, duh), but fortunately there is a free black phone on the counter. Go ahead and call Maxwell Labs on it and save your game.

Jeff can't afford much yet, but go ahead and sell any items you don't want. Keep the Broken Spray Can; you can fix and sell it later on. In the drugstore is a monkey and a woman who'll offer you the monkey in exchange for buying a pack of bubble gum for $1. The monkey will actually prove to be pretty helpful as you move along. Before you leave, offer the Pak of Bubble Gum to the monkey, and it'll be so happy it'll join you!

  • Not too far along in Jeff's journey south, you will come across an isolated tent. Inside, you will encounter two guys who will graciously offer you to rest. Take the opportunity! In fact, it's a good idea to fight enemies around this tent and build up levels a little, since Jeff has no PP for recovering his health and only cookies as food. Try to get up to level 5 or 6 before you move on.

Follow the path and you'll come to where the Tessie Watching Club has set up camp. They'll tell you about the legend of Tessie, the beast said to live here in Lake Tess. Use the phone in one of the tents to call Maxwell and save, and then sleep in the far left tent and have some stew. When you wake up, the wind will be blowing. Go to the little dirt patch in the snow. Bubble Monkey will tell you to give him some gum and... the legend is true!

Tessie gives you a lift to another part of Winters. Soon after, you'll find a cave with the words "BRICK ROAD" inscribed over it and a path blocked by another pencil statue. You'll have to go in the cave since Jeff doesn't have a Pencil Eraser. Inside is a mini-maze. Be sure to open all the presents. An easy way to do this is make it through the maze, talk to Brick Road, then go back inside. All the enemies will be gone, but not the presents!

  • Use the telephone Brick Road generously left you and then leave; the dungeon master is waiting for you. He'll congratulate you for getting through the dungeon and let you take a rest, restoring your much-needed HP. Now head for the Pond Cave a little more to the south.

The cave is pretty straightforward. Fighting Attack Slugs is really useful to build up experience. You'll come to a room with ropes. Go up the first rope and get the Cheap Bracelet. Then go stand at the bottom of the rope you can't reach and give some gum to the Bubble Monkey. He'll float up and lower the rope to you.

There's a shining spot boss here, but even if you try to fight it, you can't. It will simply tell you that only Ness can absorb the power of the Your Sanctuary it guards. Don't worry about it right now, you'll be back later.

  • When you step outside of the cave, the Bubble Monkey will immediately catch sight of an attractive (if you're a monkey, that is) female monkey. There's nothing you can do but watch the two lovebirds take off. You're on your own now.

Be extremely careful with the Cave Boys. They can easily kill you if you get in a fight with them and you are unlucky. However, if you do defeat one, it's worth a lot of exp. and a free Picnic lunch, a valuable food item. If you fight one, its attack will usually miss you, but if it connects it can do up to 40 HP of damage. Eat some food if your HP dips below that 40 mark and keep attacking it. You should be alright.

The big lab you see at the far south of Winters belongs to the famed Dr. Andonuts, Jeff's father. He will be shocked to see you and will offer you a donut, even though he doesn't have any donuts. Then he'll instruct you to use the Sky Runner to get back to Threed and rescue your friends. After you talk to him, climb in (just approach and push up against it) and you'll be on your way back to Threed.

    STEP INTO MY CIRCUS TENT

Jeff will join Ness and Paula by crashing his Sky Runner into their graveyard prison. He brings along with him his Bad Key Machine, which you can use to open up the door and escape. If you haven't gotten it already, now is the time to grab that Teddy Bear near the hint shop. It's just a little to the right of where you come out of the prison.

The equipment Jeff found in Winters is already out of date. Go straight to the drugstore and buy him a Copper Bracelet and Hard Hat. Give the Bad Key Machine and Pak of Bubble Gum to Escargo Express. Now check Jeff's IQ. If it's below 12, buy a Toy Air Gun and Bottle Rockets from the arms dealer. Then go to the graveyards and level up until his IQ is 12 or above. When his IQ hits 12, he can fix both the valuable Broken Air Gun and Broken Iron.

  • If you've asked around town, you've been told that something's strange in the south, where an odd, purple tent has been set up that hasn't been there before. Be careful when you approach it, because this tent is alive! It's not a terribly strong enemy, but respect it. Keep everyone's HP up (over 75 or so) and hit it with PSI Fire and a Bottle Rocket or two if you bought some from the arms dealer.

After you defeat Boogey Tent, it will disappear, leaving a trash can and two zombies guarding it who waste no time in running away. Inside the trash can, you'll find a Jar of Fly Honey. Hang on to this item -- it will be your key to victory when you battle Belch, the leader of the zombies.

Now you may be wondering what to do. While you're wondering, start walking north, towards the graveyards. Before too long, your Receiver Phone will start to ring. It's Apple Kid, telling you of his newest invention, "Zombie Paper", which will really come in handy. Soon after he hangs up, the Mach Pizza man will arrive and give it to you. Take it to the tent in the middle of town and use it inside.

  • Now that the trap is set, go to the hotel and take a rest. Overnight, all the zombies in Threed will head straight for the tent -- most importantly, the two zombies that are blocking the path leading north in the graveyard will leave, opening up a new path to you.

  • GRAVEYARD SHIFT

Go on down to the tent where you laid the Zombie Paper down and check out the situation. It seems that when the zombies showed up, the people inside got out in a hurry. Inside, you'll find the helpless zombies stuck permanently to the floor.

Make sure you have the Jar of Fly Honey. Now that the zombies guarding the ladder are gone, stock up on food and Bottle Rockets and head on in. You'll find a cave riddled with enemies. If a Zombie Possessor possess you with a mini-ghost, just keep going. You can get rid of it later. Beware the Zombie Dog -- it's a deadly enemy that can also poison you. Use freeze on it immediately and have some Serum handy for curing poisoning.

  • At the exit of the spooky cave, you will be attacked by a tiny little blob called the Mini Barf. It will exhale a blast of stinky breath that will make your whole party start crying early in the battle. Don't be afraid to blast him with PSI Rockin and PSI Fire because you'll almost always miss when you attack. If you hit him with PSI, he won't be very tough.

Just outside the cave are two good surprises: First, a man who is selling food. Buy enough Croissants and/or Calorie Sticks from him to last you a little while on the rest of your trek (you have some more tough enemies ahead of you). Second, the little clearing just above the salesman is a Magic Butterfly location. Go in and out of the cave and check repeatedly for butterflies and use them until your HP and PP is full.

Work your way north. It's a narrow path so the enemies will be hard to avoid. Red Antoids have nasty biting attacks, and you'll have to use PSI Freeze on the Armored Frogs. Plain Crocodiles are EXTREMELY dangerous -- use PSI to wipe them out as fast as you can. You'll find a Protein Drink and a Bomb to help you along the way. Eventually you'll see another cave entrance off to the right. Make sure you go in.

  • Inside the cave, you'll find some easy-to-defeat Violent Roaches and a Bottle Rocket in a gift box. When you reach the end, you'll be in a new and wondrous place where all the "people" are quite different from what you're used to. Welcome to Saturn Valley.

LIVIN' IT UP IN THE VALLEY THINGS TO SEE AND DO:

    - Buy a Silver Bracelet for whoever doesn't have one yet. - Buy and equip the Red Ribbon for Paula and a Great Charm for whoever doesn't yet have one. - Get a Bionic Slingshot for Paula if you want - it'll miss more, but it'll give her more Offense. Don't get one for Ness. - Stock up on Peanut Cheese Bars -- they heal a lot and they're cheap. Sell the rest of your food except PSI Caramels. - Saturn Valley is one of the most fun places in the game! Mr. Saturns embody everything weird about EarthBound! - At the bottom-left part of town is a free hotel. At the bottom right is a free hospital run by Dr. Saturn! - There are trash cans in a cave. They don't contain anything too useful, though. Maybe that's why they're in the trash.

    http://walkthrough.starmen.net/earthbound/gffalls.php#minibarf#minibarfhttp://walkthrough.starmen.net/earthbound/gffalls.php#minibarf#minibarfhttp://starmen.net/mother2/ebdb/enemies.php?enemy=225

  • Make your first two stops in Saturn Valley the Hotel and the Hospital (the first two buildings you see.) If you're possessed, Dr. Saturn will take care of it, and you can rest up at the hotel free of charge.

Inside a cave there are four Mr. Saturns. The first one you're next to when you step inside will say something about giving you a special thing on the way back (bye later!) You should definitely talk to this Mr. Saturn again after you defeat Belch.

Also in this cave, there is another Mr. Saturn that you must talk to. This particular Mr. Saturn knows the secret to how to get into the Belch Base behind Grapefruit Falls. He'll say "Then they stand still, wait for three minutes." Keep this in mind. You MUST talk to this Mr. Saturn to get into the Belch Base.

  • Make sure you stock up on goods at the Saturn Valley store. Equip everyone with a Silver Bracelet and a Great Charm, and stock up on Peanut Cheese Bars (yum!) Also, buy a Red Ribbon for Paula.

If you want, buy a Bionic Slingshot for Paula. It has less accuracy, but it's stronger than her current weapons. You might consider buying one for Jeff too if he hasn't fixed the Broken Air Gun into the Magnum Air Gun yet. Put the remainder of your money into the ATM for now, and make sure you save your game.

When you're adequately outfitted, make your way back out of Saturn Valley. After you're back out of the cave, continue north until you find the waterfall. You need to get under and behind the waterfall, so push up against the little dirt patch at the edge and Ness should disappear. Now walk left until the screen stops scrolling and then push up. Someone should say, "Say the password!"

  • Once you hear "Say the password!", drop the controller. Don't touch ANY buttons. (Now is a good time for a bathroom or snack break.) After three full minutes of not touching anything, a new message will come up saying, "Okay... you may enter." And with that you'll gain entrance to the Belch Base.

  • WELCOME TO MY UNDERGROUND LAIR

A Slimy Little Pile will be waiting for you just inside the door and will demand to know if you brought any Fly Honey. If you say yes he will let you pass through; if you say no he will make you fight.

When you open the door on the right of the top floor, you will probably see four zombies that will rush at you. Don't panic! They're not terribly tough. Don't be afraid to use PSI attacks, you'll be able to replenish your PP soon. You'll get some cool stuff out of the trash cans.

You will see Foppies, the little red things that look like walking tomatoes, running around everywhere. They'll gang up on you up to six at a time -- fight as many as you can! These things are pushovers and are great for exp. building. Take some time to build your levels up to 25 or so, it'll be a big help later.

  • Make sure you go into all the doors you find. Most of them contain valuable items in trash cans. Make sure you have the Broken laser and the HP-sucker before you leave the base.

There is a vital Butterfly point inside a door. After you walk past the conveyor belt with the Mr. Saturns, you'll see a tall ladder and a door. After going up the ladder and getting the good stuff atop it, go into the door. Enter and exit this room repeatedly and you will find Magic butterflies.

It won't be too long now until you find Master Belch. He'll greet you with a nice, aromatic BUUUUUURP! After he taunts you it'll be time to go! Make sure you use the Jar of Fly Honey immediately after the battle starts. If you don't, he'll be invincible! But if you do, he'll lose all his concentration and you can walk all over him.

    MILKING A WELL

Behind Belch there will be a tunnel inhabited by Mr. Saturns. It will lead you out into Saturn Valley, to the high place you couldn't reach before. Make sure you wash yourself off in the hot springs, you smell pretty bad after fighting Belch!

Before you do anything else, go down the now-fixed ladder and head back out toward the hotel. Make sure you talk to the Mr. Saturn near the cave entrance! He'll fork over the special things he promised you before, including a valuable Mr. Saturn Coin. Make sure to equip it.

    http://walkthrough.starmen.net/earthbound/belchfactory.php#masterbelch#masterbelchhttp://walkthrough.starmen.net/earthbound/belchfactory.php#masterbelch#masterbelchhttp://starmen.net/mother2/ebdb/enemies.php?enemy=191

  • If Jeff has an IQ of 24 or higher, sleep repeatedly at the hotel until he fixes the Broken Laser into the Laser gun. If he doesn't, sleep anyway. Call Dad, Mom, and Escargo Express, and have them pick up the Jar of Fly Honey and any other items you don't need any longer.

Now go back up to where the hot springs are. There is a Mr. Saturn who will offer you coffee. If you accept, you'll receive a message telling you about your adventure and what's next. What do they put in this coffee, anyway?

When you're rested up and ready to go, go into the cave north of the hot springs. Be ready for some tough fights. If you get in a fight with a Struttin' Evil Mushroom, use PSI Fire or Ness's special to toast them immediately, because they will almost always Mushroomize you on their first turn.

  • If you get Mushroomized early in the cave, you can turn around and go back to Saturn Valley. If you use the hot springs it will take away the mushroom. If you're mushroomized after you get out of the cave into the open, just bear with it and continue on.

Just before you reach the boss, you'll come across a present containing a Coin of slumber, a useful defensive item. Equip it on whoever's defense is the lowest right now before you fight.

Before long you'll find the Shining Spot and the Trillionage Sprout. This is a tough boss! If Jeff still has the Big Bottle Rocket, fire it now. If not, use regular Bottle Rockets, the HP Sucker, PSI Fire or Freeze and PSI Special. (DON'T use PSI attacks if the user is Mushroomized!) If you are Diamondized, it's just like being knocked out. There's nothing you can do about it, unless you have a Cup of lifenoodles.

  • If you can finally muster enough strength to fell the Trillionage Sprout, you'll gain passage to Milky Well, the third "Your Sanctuary" location. Record the message and then leave. Pick fights with the enemies that run away from you to build your exp. You should have a level in the high 20's by now.

DESERT TREK THINGS TO SEE AND DO:

    - If you don't have Peanut Cheese Bars, just get some Picnic Lunches. Get some Refreshing Herbs for poison, too. - There are two tiny seeds in the desert, one in the northwest and one in the south. It's hard finding them, but worth it. - You can talk to the old cattle bones scattered around the desert... - There are all kinds of gift boxes scattered throughout the desert. Check 'em out for some sweet items. - A sign in the desert was put up by a man looking for a contact lens he lost. You'll find it not too far from the sign. - There's a broken slot machine by the side of the road. You can still use it to gamble, though...

Now that you've taken out Belch and the Trillionage Sprout, it's time to bring the good news back to Threed. Rest up in the hotel and stock up on more Peanut Cheese Bars if you need to, then make your way back to Threed. The zombies are gone for good so it should be easy sailing. Note that only the zombies are gone, the other enemies are still around.

    http://walkthrough.starmen.net/earthbound/milkywell.php#trillionagesprout#trillionagesprouthttp://walkthrough.starmen.net/earthbound/milkywell.php#trillionagesprout#trillionagesprouthttp://starmen.net/mother2/ebdb/enemies.php?enemy=89

  • Huzzah! Now that the zombies have been destroyed, the light finally shines upon Threed, and it's a peaceful, happy town once again. Talk to the townspeople, they'll be more than glad to congratulate you on a job well done.

Remember the Insignificant Item? If you didn't get it before, check the drawers

in the Threed hospital. You'll want to take the time to catch a bus back to Twoson and take the Insignificant item back to its owner in the Twoson hospital (he looks like an Annoying Old Party Man.) In exchange, he'll give you a very rare Magic Truffle. This baby recovers a whopping 80 PP. Don't use it now, though. You'll need it later.

As you've been told by various people, the ghosts are out of the tunnels now, which means you can take the bus! Check the "BUS STOP" sign on the RIGHT (lower) side of the street and a bus will soon pull up. Hop aboard and you're on your way to Fourside!

  • It will seem like a pleasant bus ride, but suddenly it will be interrupted -- welcome to the very end of the world's longest traffic jam! The bus will be stuck there for awhile, so you'll have to get off and cross the desert on your own.

Make your first stop the drugstore. Buy Coins of slumber for everyone and upgrade Ness and Paula's weapons. (If you equipped Paula with a Bionic Slingshot, buy the Deluxe Fry Pan anyway. It's worth the -2 offense because you'll hit a lot more often.)

While you're at the drugstore, make sure you pick up a couple Refreshing Herbs. The enemies in the desert can poison you, and if you can't heal the poison, you'll be dead in a hurry.

  • The desert presents a new and potent health hazard -- sunstroke! If you get sunstroke in the desert, use Healing alpha to cure it. You'll know you have sunstroke if the screen starts flashing red and the victim will lose 2 HP each time it flashes.

The enemies in the desert are dangerous, so be ready. If you meet a Bad Buffalo, use paralysis on it immediately! It can toast even Ness with a single attack. Use Freeze on Desert Wolves because they can hurt you too. Skelpions can poison you so be careful with them as well.

If you get easily lost, just stay near the rocks at the southern edge of the desert. This will also lead you to the miner's shack on the eastern side of the desert. The miner there will ask for food, so give him something to eat. He'll reward you handsomely later on! You can also rest for free and save your game in the shack. Head south and east until you're back on the road, then enter the tunnel.

  • By the side of the road are the Slot Machine Brothers. Pay $1, and if you're lucky,

you could get a Chick, a Can of Fruit Juice, a PSI Caramel, or a Skip Sandwich. There's a gift box with $1000 in it nearby, so use that to feed your gambling addiction!

THE BIG BANANA THINGS TO SEE AND DO:

    - If you found the contact lens, return it to the man on the 2nd floor of the bakery. He'll give you a "valuable" reward. - Up in the north of the city, by the city walls, is a street punk selling junk. Don't buy the Broken Gadget yet, though. - The hint man is located behind the hotel and theater. But who needs him when you have a big walkthrough? - In the northwest is Jackie's Cafe. The locals here love to gossip and can tell you all sorts of helpful things. - The museum isn't really important now, but it will become pretty important later. Don't forget it's there!

Now that you've fed the miner, it's finally time to get past the traffic jam and on to Fourside. You can either return to the drugstore on foot and then take a bus, or you can simply walk east and through the tunnel.

  • There are rumors around town about the Runaway Five. Make tracks for the Topolla Theater and buy a ticket to get in. After the concert, head backstage and talk to the band. It seems they've gotten cheated even worse this time -- to the tune of a million bucks! MAKE SURE you talk to the Topolla Theater manager while you're here.

You keep hearing about this mysterious "Monotoli" who's in charge of Fourside. Go to the Monotoli Building (in the center of the city) and head up to the 47th floor. You'll find none other than Pokey, who will taunt you and then kick you out.

Take a look at that Department Store! I bet there's a ton of good stuff in... hey, wait a minute! You can't get in right now, but make sure you try anyway.

  • That wraps up the stuff you have to do right now, but feel free to wander around the city a bit. When you're ready, hop on a bus and head back to the desert.

    WHACK A MOLE

You are about to enter one of the most difficult dungeons in EarthBound. Go first to the drugstore and stock up on Picnic Lunches and Refreshing Herbs. You'll need plenty of both. Fill all but a few spaces in your inventory with them.

  • If you have the Magic Truffle, return to Twoson and buy a few ketchup

packets. Give all the packets and the truffle to one person, then have that person "Give" the Truffle to him/herself. This will place the Truffle at the end of his/her inventory. Now, if you use the truffle IN BATTLE, you'll regain ~90 PP and one of the ketchup packets will be spent, but not the truffle! This is a great trick to use to survive the gold mine.

It's suggested that Paula's level be at 31 before you go into the gold mine. At level 31 she will learn PSI Freeze γ, which will be extremely useful against the bosses there.

When you arrive back in the desert, go back to the mine where you met the miner and gave him food before. It should now be a big cave surrounded by people. If it isn't, go back to the Fourside #1 part of this walkthrough and make sure you talked to the Topolla Theater manager.

    http://walkthrough.starmen.net/earthbound/fourside1.phphttp://walkthrough.starmen.net/earthbound/fourside1.php

  • There are five moles, Guardian Diggers, that you must find and defeat in this maze. The enemies inside are nasty, and the Thirsty Coil Snake and Gigantic Ant will poison you regularly. That's why you need Refreshing Herbs. Use them or PSI Healing β to heal poisonings. Use PSI Freeze (α on Snakes, β on Ants) to defeat the enemies before they can harm you, but watch Paula's PP level.

When fighting the Guardian Diggers, use PSI Freeze β or γ. PSI Rockin' is OK, too. They start with power shields up, so physical attacks will bounce back for a while. This is just a suggested route through the cave. You can go through it however you like. Anyway, from the entrance, walk as far up as you can and go down the ladder. To the left is the first Guardian Digger.

After defeating this mole, walk left, up the ladder, down, go down when the path branches, and then follow the path as it curves upward until it turns left, and you'll enter a clearing with an Exit Mouse and two presents. Make sure you get the Exit Mouse; if you run out of PP you can use it to get out of the maze and rest at the miners' shack.

    http://walkthrough.starmen.net/earthbound/image/maps/goldmine_quick.png

  • From the clearing, go down and follow the path as it turns left. Use PSI Fire β if you are attacked by a group of Noose Men. You'll find the second Guardian Digger at the end of the path; after defeating it, get the valuable Platinum Band from the present and equip it on whomever needs a defense boost the most.

Now return to the clearing, and then go up from there. You'll soon encounter another mole. Defeat it, then return to the clearing, and this time go left. Follow the path downward, and you'll encounter a fourth mole.

Turn around and follow the path you just took, except this time go straight up. After some walking, you'll reach a ladder. Go down it, then follow the path to the right. Fight the last mole. Once all the moles are gone, the music will change. Use the Exit Mouse to get out of the cave and then talk to the miner.

KEEPIN' IT REAL WITH MISS FAKE

After you've talked to the miner and rested at the shack, make your way back to the bus stop and hop a bus to Fourside. When you're over the bridge, you'll be stopped by George, who will give you the only thing they've found so far -- a Diamond. It looks expensive... what to do with it?

There's no way you're going to get your hands on a million dollars to help out the Runaway Five, but you do have something valuable. Take it to the manager of the Topolla Theater. Maybe she'll have a change of heart when you offer her the gem.

Word on the street now is that the Grand Department Store has finally reopened after a long period of being closed. You're overdue at this point for some equipment upgrades, so you better go check it out. (Besides, you have nothing better to do, right?)

    GWAAAAAAAAARGH!

  • First, don't buy Paula anything. Equip Ness and Jeff with Gold Bracelets and Coins of Defense. Load Jeff up with Big Bottle Rockets, and load Ness full of Teddy Bears. You'll need them soon. Also, if Paula has the Franklin Badge, give it to Ness or Jeff. When you're done shopping, you can leave the store... or can you? As you try to leave, the lights go out, an alien runs by, and suddenly Paula is gone! What's that voice over the loudspeaker?

You really don't have a choice so start making your way up the stairs. On the way you will meet some of the most dangerous enemies in EarthBound. If you are attacked by more than one enemy at once, fire off a Big bottle rocket to take care of one of them. Make SURE you keep at least one Big bottle rocket in Jeff's inventory for the coming boss battle.

When you reach the back room on the 4th floor, you'll have to fight the Dept. Store Spook. Fire a Big bottle rocket at him and use PSI special beta immediately. If that's not enough to take him out, keep up the offensive with your best attacks. You must kill this enemy fast or it will kill you.

  • After you defeat the Spook, it will grudgingly tell you about Paula, but the only information you can get about her is the word "Monotoli". It sounds like you better go investigate. Nothing's going on at the Monotoli building... so why don't you go to the cafe and see if anyone knows anything?
