Recommendations –ICT Architectures/Services

Reference Architectures / Open ArchitecturesMany projects have generated reference architectures. These couldbe transformed into open architectures, which can be eitherimplemented or further developed or adapted by other projects toimprove them further.

System and Information Integration ArchitecturesSystem and Information Integration Architectures are becomingincreasingly important due to the growing heterogeneity, amountof information and system components available and they need tobe developed to cope with this challenge.

Data Capture, Storage and AnalysisTechnology to capture, store and analyze data is advancing from atechnical standpoint, but specifically from a methodical and legalside further developments are needed to enable efficient sensibledata and information handling, enabling business models andinnovation, while protecting individuals and companies.

Recommendations –ICT Architectures/Services

12

Data and Information VisualisationVisualisation techniques and specifically context-aware responsivevisualization of data which is a major pre-condition for efficientdecision support systems. Human-centric adaptive interfaces andcontext-centric display of only crucial information to enhanceusability.

SecurityResearch in security strategy, protocols and tools for companiesand standards to protect the networked and distributedmanufacturing systems would be necessary to ensure balancebetween security cost and benefits to an organization.

ConfidentialityConfidentiality and know-how protection throughout the networkof increasingly larger interconnected networks is essential. Therefore technological evolution of authorization, authenticationand encryption mechanisms, as well as the establishment of trustamong network participants, to cope with this scenario isrecommended.

Recommendations - ICT Infrastructures

13

Flexible and Adaptable ManufacturingSelf-adapting, resilient and reconfigurable manufacturingenvironments need to be facilitated by standardization of intra-and inter-machine communication. Wireless technologies, contextawareness, human-interaction and self-learning (e.g. forproduction configuration) mechanisms, etc. can significantlycontribute to efficiency improvements of the (re-) configuration,ramp-up, and optimisation of manufacturing environments.

New or Improved low-cost, miniaturized smart sensorsSensors need to become cheaper, smarter, smaller and moreenergy efficient, to enable new applications that until now werenot possible or viable enough due to technological and economicrestraints.

CPPS - Cyber-Physical Production SystemsCP(P)S concepts need to be further evaluated and implemented.Certain standards such as self-description, integration/interface,intercommunication and orchestration need to be developed foron platform and system level.

Recommendations –Other Technologies

New AlgorithmsThe development of easy to use algorithms for analysis, and realtime prediction needs to both address various manufacturingenterprises and also be time and resource efficient and costeffective, especially for SMEs. It also has to incorporate knowledgefrom other domains, where necessary. Furthermore, thealgorithms should be able to be executed in a distributed mannerto ensure their applicability in manufacturing environments.

ModellingThe development of smarter and better information and domainmodels can provide not only design details but also greaterpredictive capacity in order to reduce physical prototyping needsor construction of pilot plants. Simulations, virtual reality, tacitknowledge modelling and User eXperience (UX) of mathematicalmodelling potentially supports problem solving, decision supportand rapid prototyping.
