Death of Mr*. *
Nyra Cornor N«l*onOur church and entire community * <
was saddened on the 2nd day of Not*vember, 1922, by the death of Bin. guNyra Garner Nelson at Davenport,Iowa. She had been ill for some time jubut none of us areamed that the endwas so near. The news of her goingcame with such a shock that it cast a Ti,gloom over the entire city. qf ^She was the daughter and only child ^
of Mr. and Mrs. L. W. Garner of this -* iplace. Her marriage to Mr. W. R. ANelson, of Culpepper, Va., was oneof the brilliant and beautiful social KAevents of the summer of 1921. Sheand her husband had been living in 99Davenport, Iowa, since their marriageand were taking specihl courses ofstudy to further prepare tb'em for the ignoble calling to which both had dedi- g.|Qcated their lives. *
gvShe was educated at Clifford Sem- p
inary and Coker college, having grad-uated from the latter in 1918. Willie yearattendingcollege she was not only ^er8brilliant in her studies, but was one pres<of the most popular students with fj,both the faculty and student body.As one of her teachers said: "Shewas one of most loved and honoredstudents the college ever had." 10She specialized ih both vocal and in- jjstrumental music. After leavingCoker she took further studies at g.Brookfield, Conn., and in New York ^under Prof. Herbert Wilbur Green. yjce
I She was converted in early life and m
. dedicated her splendid talents to her an(jLord. She was one of the sweetestand most accomplished singers I have CQn)ever heard. For some time she sang t-onin the choir of the Citadel SquareBaptist church and afterwards was 3soloist and choir leader -of the KingStreet Baptist church. At both placesher work was of the highest order. The impress of her beautiful Christiancharacter and splendid service is gindellibly stamped upon, not only the a ychurches in which she worked, but
*
^upon the lives of all she came in con- jjtact with everywhere. m-rThe funeral services were conductedat the King. St. Baptist churchSunday afternoon November 6th.1922, by her pastor, Rev. J. G.Graham, and Dr. C. C. Coleman of the ,,Citadel Square church. The quartet gof the Citadel Square Baptist church ^rendered several beautiful and fav- jorite selections. The tremendouscrowd present showed how wide was 7her circle of friends. The body was gcarried from the church and laid torest in the beautiful Magnolia ceme- Mtery beneath a huge bank of flowers Ato await the glorious resurrection Hmorn. ^She is survived by her husband, '
^father, mother and infant son,Edward Warren Nelson. Our deepestsympathy goes out to these dear ^A ones in a real way, for we, too, feel fl
