Feed My Starving Children Saturday, February 16 2-4pm
Potluck following at Woodlake Lutheran Church
Hope, along with House of Prayer and Oak Grove Lutheran Churches, have been invited to join Woodlake Lutheran Church’s Socializing Adult Lutherans Together (SALT) for both fellowship and service.
For this event children are welcome to attend as well. Guidelines for children volunteering can be found on the FMSC website www.fmsc.org.
The packing event is on Saturday, February 16, from 2-4pm. Those attending should arrive by 2pm at the Eagan site, 990 Lone Oak Rd., Suite 136.
Following the event there will be a potluck at Woodlake Lutheran Church, 7525 Oliver Ave. S., Richfield, from 5:30-7:30pm.
There is a sign-up sheet in the gathering area. Please indicate if you will be participating in just the packing event or both packing and potluck. Deadline to sign up is February 14.

My seventh-grade English teacher didn’t think much of me. I can’t blame her, I didn’t put a lot of effort into that class doing the
minimum to get by. At the end of the school year she offered the class a chance to talk about what we thought each other might end up with for a career later in life. She offered her opinion as well. It was intended to be all in fun, but let’s just say that the career she opined for me was nothing near what I saw myself doing. Somehow to this English teacher, the idea that I didn’t have much use for knowing what a gerund was or why present participles are important to sentence structure or how to write without using run-on sentences equated to the idea that I would choose a career where not much would be expected of me (oh, how wrong she was).
The truth is, I still don’t understand the rules of the English language. When my kids are playing MadLibs

The Importance of “-ing”

and ask me for an adjective I confirm with them exactly what that is (I know, it describes a noun, but what’s a noun?). But I know one thing about the English language “-ing” matters.
When you add “-ing” to the end of a word it gives the word action. It is different from adding “-er” or “-ed” to the same word. Take the word “laugh.”
I am a laugh-er – describing me as one who laughs.
I laugh-ed – reflects the past, the laugh is over.
I am laugh-ing – there is action - laughing.
As followers of Jesus, I believe that we are called to be “-ing” people. Jesus’ disciples are following and learning from him as he is traveling, praying, teaching, healing, com-forting, empowering, challenging, forgiving, loving, and saving the peo-ple he encounters. You don’t find Jesus saying “well, I healed one person, I can cross that off my list” – NO, Jesus continues healing the sick, giving sight to the blind, making the lame to walk, forgiving, forgiving, forgiving (thank God for those last three).
This all comes to mind for me as we continue the steps to becoming a Reconciling in Christ congregation. As I’ve mentioned to some of you, the “-ing” suffix on “Reconciling” is a conscious and intentional choice that the work of reconciliation is ongoing, just like the work of discipling is ongoing.
The work of being a welcoming con-gregation doesn’t end at a welcome statement or a canopy over the door, it continues in greeting visitors at the door and going out into our neigh-borhood and engaging the people that we meet walking down the street. It continues with planning events for the community. It means building relationships with those we find difficult to love with the goal of understanding their perspective. It means helping our neighbor when they are in need and asking for help we are in need. It means partnering with those who are already doing it and working together on creating what is missing.
“-ing” matters. Because ending “-ing” leaves end [sic].

Our non-profit focuses on educating the poorest children in Ethiopia, particularly at the Don Bosco School in Dilla. With your support, we strive to fund their annual school budget of more than $40,000 which educates 540 children!! Your gift was truly an answer to our prayers as we were not on track to reach our goal this year. Your generosity will provide not only an education, school uniform, daily meal (for many children, their only meal a day), access to medical care, a safe environment and clean water to each child, but it also gives them hope for a better future!

Next Council Meeting February 7. As with all council meetings, all congregation members are welcome.
• A motion was made, seconded and approved to move the $6,179.51 surplus from the nursery school into the Operating Account.
• Charlie Olson asked for discussion as to when to take down the anniversary display in the fellowship area. It was decided to take it down at the end of January. Then, there was discussion as to what to display after that.
• Pat Killian is looking for cooks to help with the Advent dinners from March 13th – April 10th. Wade Gibbons volunteered to be on the committee to help Pat. Thank you, Wade!
• Dorian Thompson presented the budget for 2019. A motion was made, seconded and approved to accept the budget for 2019 as presented.

FARE FOR ALL 2019 The Food Group
For the last year or so, I have been aware of a food distribution program at various area churches in our area. I hope we will be able to offer this to our neighborhood sometime later this year.
Fare for All (FFA) is a non-profit that buys food in bulk and passes the savings on to their customers, who then save about 40% over grocery store prices. Think of them as the wholesaler that sells to grocery stores. Instead, they sell directly to us at wholesale prices. They offer fresh and frozen foods, plus give free baked goods to the customers..
There are no income guidelines, it’s open to all, not just for poor people.
I went to Holy Trinity Lutheran on 31st St and 28th Ave S in December, to try it out. Their December frozen meat special contained a 6 lb. spiral cut ham, a 5 lb. whole chicken, a package of chicken legs, Italian chicken brats, plus two bags of frozen corn and mixed vegetables and an apple pie—all for $30.00! I also bought their fresh produce package that was on sale for $8.00. It contained a sack of potatoes, onions, yams, carrots, apples and oranges. They also had other grill packs and specials available.
Hope is on a waiting list to become a food site, and hopefully we will be able to offer this in 2019. FFA currently serves 38 sites with two trucks. Each truck goes to two sites per day, which are visited one time
per month. If you would like to try it out, there are several churches/community centers that participate. Go to www.fareforall.org to find one close to you. They are in Minneapolis, Eagan, Bloomington, etc. No pre-registration is necessary, you just show up, select what you want to purchase, pay by cash, credit card or EBT, and then are assisted with your order and helped getting it to your car.
This is a great way to get wholesome food for yourself and/or to share. I also think it will be a great way to share the Spirit of Hope! If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact me.
