How’s your connection? In the 21st

century, we have a much greater capacity to be connected to

people than ever before in history – through the World Wide Web and mobile technologies with

4G satellite networks – while at the very same time our modern existence can be incredibly

isolating. We stand on street corners, in restaurants, or in our homes connected to a global

network of information and communication at the touch of a screen and yet struggle to relate to

the people living next door or sitting across from us. Furthermore, if you have ever had a dropped

call on your mobile phone or waited in a long line at an automated airport check-in kiosk, then you know that

technology is limited in its ability to create connections.

There is one, however, with whom our connection is never lost and to whom our calls never get dropped. While

technology and modern life fail to fulfill our need for connection, God’s capacity for connection is limitless. In fact, God

will stop at nothing – not even death on a cross – to make a connection with us and reconnect us to each other. God’s

loving intention in creation, which was affirmed and fulfilled in the death and resurrection of Jesus, is for us to

experience a connection greater than the latest satellite technology. We were reconciled to God through Christ to live a

life of deep and trusting connection to God and to one another, a life of 4G Faith!

For five Sundays, beginning on Rally Day September 9th

, we will explore in worship and adult forums the 4G’s of faith:

Gathering, Growing, Giving, and Going. These 4 critical aspects to a life of faith are what create and nurture God’s

intended connection for us. I invite you to upgrade your faith connection to 4G through this series and the many other

ministry opportunities beginning this fall at Hope.

Staff Announcement

August 22, 2012

Dear Friends of Hope,

It is with some sadness that I am

reporting that I have notified Pastor Chris

of my resignation of my position as

Secretary at Hope Lutheran Church. I am

leaving to take a full time position at the

company where I was employed before I

came to Hope.

My last day in the office will be Friday, September 7th. Pastor Chris and the

personnel team are already working on a plan for my replacement. Ginny Olson

will be helping as interim church secretary. Our family will continue to worship

here at Hope and we will be involved as we have been in the past.

I want to express my gratitude to you all for all of the support that you have

given me in the past 4 1/2 years. I have made a lot of friendships and I expect

that the relationships that have been developed will continue on in the future.

This is an exciting time for Hope. We are looking at our vision for the future.

We have an exciting new staff and a supportive congregation. Whoever fills the

role of Secretary/Administrator will be working with a great staff and wonderful

volunteers. I’m excited to see the ministry of Hope continue, I will just be in a

different role than I am as a staff member.

In peace, Kristi

Kristi Gay

Worship and Music Ministry Russ Carlson, Minister of Music

Notes from Russ

My goodness, the

summer seems to

have flown by

and here we are

at Rally Sunday

already.

Thanks to all that

provided special

music for worship during the

summer months.

I look forward to rehearsing the

choir and helping them prepare for

worship. Hope Choir rehearsals will

begin on Wednesday, September 5th

at 7:30 p.m. in the choir room. The

Contemporary Singers will continue

to meet on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m.

in the choir room.

Hope’s Library

Hassle Free Library It's true.....No hassle to take out books. No checking

out or in.

We have religious books (as a church library should),

devotionals, and books on daily living, and grief. We

also have fiction, teen and children’s books.

Plus, we have DVD's for the family. No need to go to

Red Box.

Celebrate an important event or remember someone special with an arrangement of flowers on the altar.

Contact the office to arrange the order and to put a note in the bulletin.

Arrangements are $30.

I know there are others that can sing

in the congregation. You are invited

to come and try us out. Maybe you

will find a home in the Contemporary

Singers, or the Hope Choir? There are

plenty of chairs waiting to be filled.

Could this be the time for you to

come and join us?

If you play an

instrument (including

the piano) and would

be willing to share

your musical gift, please let me know.

Did you notice, on Sunday August

26th

we used setting 10 from the

ELW? This setting relies on

somewhat familiar hymns for the

liturgy. This is the first major change

in the fourth Sunday liturgy in some

time. We will use it for a number of

weeks and as the fall continues, we

will introduce and utilize another of

the liturgies the ELW has for us. I feel

it is time to spread our wings and get

familiar with liturgies we have not

tried yet. Rest assured, I will take

time to introduce the selected liturgy

to you by having the choir sing parts

of it to introduce it to you and gain

some familiarity. Please do not be

shy to let me know how these

transitions work for you.

Again, I encourage you to come and

sing with us. Come and lift your voice

to the Lord. There is a chair waiting

for you.

Thank you for your generous gift to

more new food requests from orphanages, clinics,

missions, and feeding programs across the globe. In

way to feeding those who are hungry in both body and

spirit!

he had given thanks, he broke them and gave them to

the disciples, and they in turn to the people. They all

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

We are a church that is deeply rooted and always being

made new. As we gather for worship this morning, may

the Holy Spirit fill and guide us, so that we may be a

church that is both resilient and always reforming.

In less than a year, we will celebrate the 25th

anniversary of the ELCA. As we celebrate, we look back

at the people and events that have shaped us as a

church.

Join us in celebrating the stories that have made us

vibrant and distinctive yet brought us together as nearly

10,000 congregations, 65 synods and numerous

churchwide ministries freed in Christ to love and serve

neighbors in our own communities and around the

world.

What God has done through us is indeed worth

celebrating. In 25 years, we have:

· Started 435 new congregations

· Ordained nearly 8,000 pastors

· Sent more than 2,000 missionaries to serve

around the world

· Contributed more than $350 million toward the

alleviation of hunger and poverty

The year of our 25th anniversary begins Jan. 1, 2013,

with the theme “Always being made new.” I invite you

to join me in celebrating these 25 years together in

Christ. Visit www.ELCA.org/25years for more

information, and begin planning ways to bring this

celebration to your congregation.

I am grateful for your leadership, support and prayers in

making the work of this church possible.

In God's grace,

The Rev. Mark S. Hanson

Presiding Bishop

Evangelical Lutheran Church in America

Thank you!

A group of 11 participated in the 5th annual intergenerational service trip to

Wilderness Canoe Base. This year we were the only group on the island.

On Sunday we started our day with a sunrise canoe paddle around the

island. As the mist rose off the lake we had the opportunity to confess our

sins and hear the words of God's forgiveness. We also sang "This is My

Father's World" and "Beautiful Savior" - songs that reminded us of the

wonder of nature that surrounded us. Work projects included the moving of

firewood, clearing trails, cleaning window screens, freshen tent pads with

new mulch and giving the kitchen a good cleaning.

We also had free time to do some more canoeing, visiting the Chik-Wauk

Museum and hiking to the Magnetic rock on the Gunflint Trail.

Home cooked meals served family style were enjoyed by all. As our days

began with the sunrise, they ended at the campfire under an amazing star

filled sky.

mysteries”. A four week campaign will

Stewardship Sunday on Sunday,

have received the postcard).

Council Mini-Minutes (highlights) August 9, 2012

Next Council Meeting September 6, 7pm in Hope’s fellowship hall.

As with all of the monthly council meetings, all congregation members

are welcome to attend.

What is stewardship?

Let’s start by identifying what stewardship is not. Stewardship is not a

program, not a fall campaign for the budget, not a one-shot learning

experience. Stewardship is “everything I do after I say I believe.”

Congregations have long equated stewardship with only money. It does begin

there, but it must continue on.

“ … you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under

compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” 2 Corinthians 9:7

Pastor Chris discovers another thing they never taught in seminary.
