TEACHERS’ DAY CELEBRATION

Teachers’ Day Celebration this year was held on the 30 August 2017. The celebration was divided into 3 parts. It started off with the Teachers’ Day Para-Liturgy which focussed on the talents God had given to each and every one of us and how we should use our talents wisely. The second part of the celebration was the very exciting SACPS Got Talent show. SACPS Got Talent was organised from the beginning of this year to scout for talented students in the area of Performing Arts. Finalists went through a number of auditions before being selected to perform for the SACPS Got Talent finale show held during the Teachers’ Day Celebration. Each finalist put up an amazing performance and displayed commitment, courage and cheerfulness. All the finalists enjoyed themselves thoroughly. The student and teacher audience participated by casting their votes for their favourite performance and the results were announced after the term break in September. The winners of SACPS Got Talent were: The celebration ended off with a netball game and telematch between the teachers and students. The upper primary teachers, together with our Principal, Mrs Eugenie Tan, played an exciting game of netball against the Primary 4 to 6 students in the School Netball Team. The girls cheered enthusiastically for their schoolmates and teachers. The lower primary teachers enjoyed a telematch with the Primary 1 to 3 students at the Indoor Sports Hall. There was much fun and laughter, and the students enjoyed the good opportunity to bond with their teachers. It was indeed a memorable day for both the teachers as well as the students. Written by Mdm Audra Cardoza TEACHERS’ DAY PARA-LITURGY A Para-Liturgy was organised by the Chapliancy Committee as part of the Teachers’ Day celebration on 30 September 2017. The teachers who contributed to Faith. Hope. Love – a Canossian Art Unites Exhibition, shared about how they had used their talents to touch the lives of others. The Para-Liturgy and sharing by teachers highlighted how each of us is unique and gifted. It also helped the students realise that they too have their own special talents which they can use to benefit others.

CHILDREN’S DAY CELEBRATION

The school celebrated Children’s Day on 5 October 2017. The celebration began in the school hall with the singing of the National Anthem, Children’s Day song and the reading of the Children’s Day message by Mrs Eugenie Tan. The students then participated in the Children’s Day Para-Liturgy led by the Catholic teachers and Sr Geraldine Lim. The theme for this year’s celebration was Mad Hatters and many of the children arrived in school wearing their interesting and beautiful handmade hats. Even the teachers joined in the fun and wore different types of hats that day. As part of the special programme for the day, the Primary 1 to 4 students were given extended recesses. They were treated to a special carnival put together by the Canossian Co-Educators (CCEs). There was a delightful plethora of games, snacks and stationery items for the children to take their pick. The CCEs also set up a K-Pop dance station and beads booths for students to make their own bracelets and necklaces. The students were also treated to an exciting Magic Show by our very own parent, Mr Jon Heron. One of our CCEs thrilled the girls by dressing up as Poppy, a character from the movie Trolls. The Primary 1 to 4 students also had a picnic as they watched a movie in the school hall. They watched Sing! while enjoying snacks and treats from their special goodie bags. After the movie picnic, the students wrote Thank-You cards to show their appreciation to the people who had made their Children’s Day a special one. The Primary 5 and 6 students were also given a special movie treat. They were treated to the movie Despicable Me 3 at Filmgarde Cineplex, Kallang. They thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to spend time with their friends over popcorn. It was indeed a fun and exciting Mad Hatters’ Party for all. Written by Mrs Daleen Ferro CHILDREN’S DAY PARA-LITURGY The Children’s Day Para-Liturgy was held as part of the programme for Children’s Day Celebration on 5 October 2017. The Catholic teachers, together with Sr Geraldine Lim, shared with the students on how they are the light of the world. Students were reminded to light up the world with their good deeds and love for oth-ers. The Agape Club members then led the school community in the singing of the hymns. It was a meaningful and reflective morning for all students and staff. Written by Mrs Perpetua Ho

INTERNATIONAL PEACE DAY The school commemorated International Peace Day on 21 September 2017. A slew of activities were organised by the school which included a talk on the need to maintain peace in the world. The students also observed a minute of silence during the talk to pray for a world filled with peace. They were then reminded on how they could play a part in contributing to peace efforts in the world by being a peacemaker. Students then wrote a peace pledge in the shape of a feather. The peace pledges were arranged to form 3 different doves, each representing Faith, Hope and Love. These doves were displayed in the canteen on International Peace Day itself. Through the activity, students were shown how the value of Charity, a School Core Value, was important for maintaining peace in the world. Written by Mrs Perpetua Ho IT’S AN ALL SAINTS’ PARTY! FAMILY MASS About 250 parents, students, Canossian Sisters and staff came together to celebrate All Saints Day at a Family Mass in St. Anthony’s Canossian Primary School on 31 October 2017. This Mass was organised because the school believes that a Canossian Family that prays together stays together. The children and their families were encouraged to come dressed as their favourite saints and the school welcomed many little saints into our community that evening. Before Mass, the families also took part in a quiz which encouraged them to learn more about the lives of the saints. During the homily, Father Johnson Fernandez reminded the children that saints were ordinary people who focused on doing good, and thus everybody could become a saint. Parents shared that the Mass was a meaningful event that allowed them to learn more about the saints in an engaging and enriching way and that they looked forward to attending more of such events as a Catholic family.

PRIMARY 5 CATHOLIC GIRLS’ CAMP

On 3 November 2017, 46 Catholic girls from Primary 5 attended a one night camp that was organized by the school’s Chaplaincy team, together with the Canossian Sisters, at Lifesprings Retreat Centre. The girls were given a chance to learn more about how the Canossian Sisters give of their lives in service through the different communities at the Convent and at St Joseph’s Home. It was an enriching and spirit-filled evening for the students as they put aside the distractions of life to come together to reflect on their faith and spend time with God as a Canossian family. Seeing how the Canossian Sisters lived their lives was an inspiration to the girls. The Sisters’ commitment, compassion and cheerfulness in their daily lives in service to God and others was something that touched all those who attended the camp. Written by Mrs Perpetua Ho

PRIMARY 1 FAIRY TALE WEEK The Primary 1 students have been exploring different fairy tales stories in their English classes since the start of Term 4. They were first given a variety of fairy tale stories to read, followed by an opportunity to create their own version of fairy tale stories. In the week leading up to Children's Day, the teachers read a different fairy tale story each day to the students. Based on the stories, the students learnt about literary devices such as point of view and characterisation. After each story, the students completed an activity based on the story they had read. For example, the students put themselves in the shoes of Goldilocks and wrote an apology letter to the 3 bears for breaking into their house. The students had a joyful time as they designed their own fairy tale castles using 2D shapes and their own fairy tale wands! To complement what they had learnt during the Fairy Tale Week, the Primary 1 students dressed up as their favourite fairy tale character as part of Children’s Day Celebration. It was indeed an amazing and magical week for all. Written by Mrs Vanessa Goh

PRIMARY 1 A-MATH-ZING RACE The Primary 1 students participated in the annual A-Math-Zing Race on 7 and 8 November 2017. There were a total of five stations which the students visited in small groups. The objective of the workshop was to increase the environmental awareness amongst students, especially in the area of environmental protection. During the workshop, the 3 students went through several learning stations to learn about the various environmental issues. They also had to participate in a discussion on environmental issues. Through the workshop, the students gained knowledge on how to use posters effectively to spread messages on environmental protection. Besides learning the key features of a good poster, they also learnt how to perform an effective Show and Tell using a poster. The workshop was well received by the 3 students as they felt that they were able to perform their role as Canossian Ambassadors more effectively. They were more confident about promoting environmental awareness to their peers and in enhancing environmental protection efforts in the school. Written by Mdm Lim Siew Fang

DEEPAVALI CONCERT On 1 November 2017, the school celebrated Deepavali with a mini concert. The theme for this year’s concert was Deepavali: A Music & Dance Celebration. The school invited St Anthony’s Canossian Secondary School’s Indian Dance CCA to perform 3 Indian dance pieces. The secondary school girls put up a marvellous and entertaining performance for the younger students. Through the dance performance, the students learnt the various forms of Indian dance. Besides the dance performance by the secondary school’s students, the Tamil Language Department also invited Bhaskar's Arts Academy to perform a mini musical skit depicting the significance of Deepavali. The musical skit portrayed the story of the demon king Naragasuran and Lord Krishna which symbolised the victory of good over evil. The story was showcased through 3 different traditional Indian dance forms - Kathak, Kathagali and Bharatanatyam. Not only did the students and teachers enjoy the vibrant and colourful performance, they also learnt more about the significance of Deepavali. Written by Mrs Naren Malini

MOTHER TONGUE LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT MID-AUTUMN FESTIVAL CELEBRATION

On 23 September 2017, the school collaborated with Fengshan Topaz Residents’ Committee to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival. The main objectives of this celebration were to increase students’ appreciation of the Chinese culture, provide students with a platform to use the Chinese Language beyond the classroom, strengthen their bonds with their family members and to showcase their talents. Students from the Chinese and Modern Dance CCAs put up a dance item respectively as part of the evening programme for the community. Meera Mardolker, from 5 Temperance, presented a lively Chinese oratorical performance. The audience was impressed with the students’ performances. The Environment Committee also put up the SACPS Loves God’s Earth Exhibition during the Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration. The Art exhibition aimed to raise the environmental awareness of the residents in our community. The 11 pieces of artwork on display were all completed by our Primary 6 students using recycled or recyclable materials. Through the artworks, the students showcased the environmental issues that they were concerned about, such as the effects of trash in the ocean as well as deforestation. At the exhibition, Canossian Ambassadors were present to share the art pieces to the public. Information on how to be more environmental friendly was shared through fun quizzes. Cute bookmarks with Go Green tips designed by the ambassadors were given as tokens to the visitors. Many parents who came for the celebration also seized the opportunity to educate their children on the importance of playing their part for the environment. To show their commitment, they wrote their pledges on “leaves” that were printed on recycled paper. These “leaves” were later pinned onto a Reflection Tree. The event was well received by both the students and their families as 300 families turned up for the celebration. The Resident Committee organised numerous activities such as tea appreciation, calligraphy writing and games. The Chinese Language Department teachers also conducted a mooncake making session. Both students and their families had a first-hand taste of making their own mooncakes. It was indeed a memorable occasion and we look forward to another meaningful and joyful Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration next year!

SCHOOLS DIGITAL MEDIA AWARDS (SDMA) 2017 This year, 1,760 students were recognised for their creativity in video production and photo essays in the annual Schools Digital Media Awards (SDMA). Judged on their content, creativity, engagement and technical quality, a total of 52 awards (2 Platinum, 11 Gold, 14 Silver and 25 Merit) were given out at the SDMA awards ceremony graced by Ms Rosemarie Somaiah, partner of Asian Storytelling Network. The SDMA is co-organised by MOE and Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s School of Film and Media Studies. The competition provides a platform for students to express themselves creatively through video and (online) photo essays. It promotes the values of teamwork and collaboration, and enriches the development of media literacy among students and teachers. The themes for this year’s competition were Cyber Wellness, the Singapore Spirit and Watch Me Teach. Of these, Cyber Wellness received the most interest among the participants, with a significant number of entries showing concern for their peers’ safety online and the impact of cyberbullying. For Singapore Spirit, some entries mused on what being “Singaporean” meant, in the wake of Singapore’s golden jubilee. We are pleased that one of our teams had won the Merit Award for their Video The Real Face on the theme of Cyber Wellness. We would like to congratulate the following students: For more information on the SDMA, please visit the website:
