FROM THE EDITORS DESKFROM THE EDITORS DESKFROM THE EDITORS DESKFROM THE EDITORS DESKFROM THE EDITORS DESK
A warm welcome to all the members of the YWCA. A new board has taken office in thebeginning of September. Our past president Mrs. Molly Benjamin did a splendid job and wecongratulate her. Our new president is Mrs. Shirly George as I am sure you all know. She needsno introduction as she was a Vice President in the previous board and has always been anactive member. Let us wish her and all the new board members a productive and successfulyear.
But the new year for the Board is touched with sadness, at the sudden demise ofMrs. Nancy Mathew, the previous editor of Kiran and Recording Secretary of the previous Board. She had been an active and involved Board member in spite of her occasional ill health. Herpassing away is a loss not only for her family but for all of us at the YWCA. She will be greatlymissed. May God bless her soul. Rest in peace Nancy.
Now for the new year, we had the beautiful candlelight ceremony so that the new Boardand all the members could take the pledge as members again. I hope all members will makea decision to be more active and participate in more activities of the Y. Hope to see more ofeveryone this year.
I thank all the members for participating in the elections which has brought in the newboard and I invoke the blessings of the Almighty on the new Board.

REMEMBERING ‘NANCY MATHEWS’
Nancy Mathew’s sudden and untimely demise on the 20th of August 2014, shocked one andall. As the YWCA Recording Secretary from 2012-2014, she had attended the last Board Meeting,in August, before the elections. Who would think that this would be Nancy’s last visit to the ‘Y’?
The President, Shirley George, visited Nancy’s family and requested them to be present at thecondolence meeting to be held at the YWCA. It was agreed that Nancy’s daughter, Vinaya &sister-in-law would be attending the condolence meeting on Wednesday 17/09/2014 at 4pm.
A sizable number of members representing the five area groups of the YWCA–Kripa, Sathyam,Sneham, Dharmam and Pratibha attended the meeting, which was chaired by Mrs. Shirley George.
After recording her condolences on behalf of the YWCA and paying a brief tribute to the admirablequalities of the late Nancy Mathews, Mrs. George requested the designated members to comeforward and speak a few words.
Mrs. Vimala Abraham, who represented the Dharmam group, said that she was closely relatedto Nancy and spoke warmly about Nancy’s childhood days. She traced Nancy’s life from childhoodtill her marriage. Vimala said that she still had a vivid mental picture of the beautiful Nancy gettingmarried. As years passed by, even though Nancy developed many health problems, her indomitablespirit refused to give up. Mrs. Abraham then referred to Nancy’s last write-up in the KIRAN, whereshe thanked her parents for making her what she was. This tribute had deeply touched Vimala’sheart. She said that this really gives a clue to the real person that was Nancy.
Mrs. Alice John, a member of ‘Y’ and chairperson of CASS (Cancer & Aids Shelter Society)spoke about Nancy’s compassionate nature. She had been a member of CASS and was alwaysready to help the cause of cancer and felt very empathetic towards those afflicted with AIDS. Sheread out a lovely letter that Nancy had written for the CASS brochure.
The next speaker was Mrs. Jaga Kurien. As a neighbour & close friend of Nancy, Jaga wasaway at Bangalore when she got the news of Nancy’s sudden death. Leaving everything unfinishedat Bangalore, she had made a mad rush back to Kottayam to pay her last respects.
As a representative of the Kripa group of which Nancy had also been a member, Jaga renderedan emotional speech and could hardly complete what she wanted to say. She did not fail to speakabout Nancy’s culinary prowess and said that Nancy was always there for everyone, be it cookingor serving.
Mrs. Chinnu Jacob, who represented the Pratibha group, also referred to Nancy’s last write-upin the Kiran and said that Nancy always used to mention that life is not a bed of roses and that onehas to be prepared for the thorns as well. Mrs. Jacob felt that Nancy had a lot of inner strengths; thisshe attributed to the deep faith in God instilled by her parents.
Before concluding, Mrs. Jacob quoted a verse from the Bible, where itis mentioned that one need not look at death as a final parting. We will allarise when Christ calls. Let us not grieve for the dead but on the other hand, honour and remember their good deeds.
Next, the family members were requested to speak a few words. Theypolitely excused themselves as they were so overwhelmed with grief.
Shortly afterwards the meeting was adjourned.
Nancy will continue to be remembered and those words spoken in hermemory will continue to reverberate in our minds forever.
Adieu Nancy, may your soul rest in peace.Dhanya Gopinath

Most of us know what it means to be stunned by the sudden passing away of adear friend or a family member. We have stood at the open grave with hot tears runningdown our cheeks and have asked in utter bewilderment' why O why? "We know theimpact these people made, and we can't help but think of the good they might havecontinued to do, had they lived longer.
This is a thought that has come to my mind on the sudden and untimely demise ofNancy. Nancy was a member of the YWCA of Kottayam for over 20 years. She had beena very active member and had served on the board several times. From the year 2012 to2014 she served on the board as recording secretary and editor of our newsletter Kiran. Iam sure each one of us had the opportunity to read her editorial note in the last issue ofthe Kiran in which she wrote that she has been so blessed in life and confesses her totalfaith in God. She leaves behind this beautiful and sincere message for each one of us, tocount our blessings and to put our total trust in God.
Nancy over the past few years had a number of health issues. All the same, everytime she took up a responsibility she put in her very best. In fact she was a perfectionist. She was an excellent cook and had held a number of cooking demonstrations at the YWCAand other places. She was known for her perfect cakes and desserts. She was also involvedwith other organisations like the inner wheel, CASS and a had been a member of theZumoro choir. She served as the president of the Inner Wheel twice.
The YWCA has lost a very sincere, genuine and committed member. We shouldcontinue to pray for her husband Viji and children Vinaya and Vineeth. May God comfortthem and give them strength to face this sudden loss.
It was Sir Walter Scott who asked Is death the final sleep? No it is the finalawakening. That is true of every believer in Christ. Even when grief overcomes us or
Vimla Abraham
confusion assails us we can trust in God’s love. May Nancy’s soulrest in peace.

Passion Fruit Jam
Ingredients:-
6 passion fruit: (makes 21/3 cup of pulp, fruit pulp and seeds) 2 cups waterWater - ¼ cupSugar - 21/3 cupJuice - ½ a lime
Wash the fruit thoroughly. Then cut in half and scoop out the fruit pulp and seeds. Thismakes 1 and 1/3 cups of fruit pulp. Keep covered in the fridge. Take half the number of shells andput in a bowl with 2 cups of water and let it soak for 24 hours in the fridge.
Next day boil the shells for 12 minutes till almost all the water is absorbed. Now the fruitshould peel easily. The thin outer skin can easily be peeled off now. Also the very thin innermembrane peels of. Reserve the inner part of the shells and blend to a pulp with a quarter cupwater. Return the pulp to a stainless steel pan and add the reserved juice and seeds. This makesa total of 2 and 1/3 cups of pulp, seeds and juice. Add an equal amount of sugar, juice of a ½ alime and boil briskly for about 15 minutes till set.
Now transfer to dry sterilized jars. Fill till ¼ inch below the lip of the jar. Let cool for 10minutes. Makes about 750 gms of jam.
The nice thing about this jam is that it has the texture and bite of good thick cut marmaladewith the bits of inner pulp forming the equivalent of an orange rind.
