The story of young Jesus, The Lost Boy, is found in Luke 2:39-52. Mary and Joseph lose track of twelve-year-old Jesus for three days, and when they finally find him, he is sitting in his "Father's house"--demonstrating with his questions a great understanding of God. Within the musical is a reassuringly human message: even parents chosen by God can lose a child; even a perfect child can give his parents anxiety. The message is sure to comfort anyone who has ever been a parent, a child, or even those who have misplaced Jesus for a while. Please plan to join us on Mother’s Day and enjoy the musical offering our children will give to the glory of God. 9 O'clock Worship on May 10 will celebrate the stories of mothers in the Bible. The Old and New Testaments are full of fascinating women called by God to be mothers. Our worship service will be an opportunity to hear these women’s voices and lift up the love and hard work of all people who follow God’s call.

Anne Lamott Speaks at Second Presbyterian Church

A “Second Wind” was blowing strong through Second Presbyterian Church on April 17, as over 850 women and men gathered in our Sanctuary to hear stories and gather wisdom from Anne Lamott. The crowd was overflowing on Friday evening and Presbyterian women from around our Presbytery gathered again on Saturday morning for a more “intimate” gathering with Anne. Special thanks to Catherine Lowry, Karen Akin, and the Second Wind Planning Team for all the energy, organization, dedication, and hard work that made it possible for us to host such an amazing event!!

UPCOMING SHORT-TERM SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS - “CALLED AS PARTNERS IN CHRIST’S SERVICE”

MAY 17, 24, AND 31 IN ROOM 65/66

In one of our favorite hymns, we are “called as partners in Christ’s service, called to ministries of grace….. and we are called to respond

with deep commitment fresh new lines of faith to trace.” We are very blessed to have both ordained ministers and dedicated volunteers connected with our congregation who are deeply committed in a

variety of programs and ministries supported by our Outreach Ministry. Join us in May to hear more about some exciting and growing ministries

led by these folks who help us support new ways to “be the church” beyond our walls.”

• May 17 - David Gill, Executive Director of Ferncliff Camp and Conference Center, will join us to talk about the many ways the gospel ministry is proclaimed and lives are touched through the variety of programs offered through the camp and its staff.

• May 24 - Our parish associate Robert (Bobby) Williamson will join us to talk about his work with Mercy Community Church, an ecumenical ministry he founded to provide a place of hospitality and spiritual community for all people, especially those living on the streets of Little Rock.

• May 31 - Our Young Adult Volunteers: Dan Bohnker, Molly DeWitt, and Alex Haney will talk about the Young Adult Volunteer program of the PC(USA). Our congregation partners with Ferncliff and Presbyterian Disaster Assistance to provide a YAV worksite in Little Rock. These young adults will talk about this exciting program and what they have been working on during their year of service here.

And the award goes to….. The Fellowship Ministry hosted a delicious and festive dinner to appreciate those serving as elders and deacons in our congregation. With a nod toward the academy awards, our “outgoing” officers were honored and appreciated and our “incoming officers” were welcomed in Hollywood style! We continue to be thankful for the energy, heart, time, and talents shared by our church officers as they continue to lead our many ministries as we strive to live out our mission as Christ’s disciples.

The Second Peds team is forming now for NAMI Walk 2015 on May 9! This 5K walk, which will take place at Dickey-Stephens Park in North Little Rock, raises money for and awareness about NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness. The primary goal of this 9th annual walk is to raise awareness about NAMI Arkansas and its efforts to achieve high quality treatment and recovery for individuals living with mental illness. Another important goal is to raise funds

Annual Walk for Mental Health – Walk or Volunteer

on Saturday, May 9

to support NAMI Arkansas programs. The Second Presbyterian Outreach Ministry supports NAMI Arkansas each year. The NAMI Walk provides you a chance to demonstrate our support for this important cause. The walk will take place on Saturday morning, May 9 (registration begins at 9:00 a.m., walk starts at 10:00 a.m.). There is no cost to participate - you sign up online, and then solicit contributions from friends, family, coworkers, etc. If you raise $100, you get a free t-shirt! If you can’t attend on May 9, you can still sign up to be a "virtual walker," and just raise money online, or donate to another walker. This year, there is another great opportunity – please volunteer to work at registration and refreshment stations from 9:00-11:00 a.m. If you couldn’t participate in the Day of Service (or if one Day of Service isn’t enough for you!), this will be a fun opportunity to represent Second Presbyterian’s outreach efforts in our community. To join the Second Presbyterian Church team or contribute to a Second Peds walker, visit http://namiwalks.nami.org/SecondPeds. To volunteer, to sign up the old-fashioned way, or if you have questions, contact Rick Owen (501-307-9593, [email protected]).

A Message from Second Presbyterian Member, Claudia Stallings, about her upcoming work with Living Waters of the World in Haiti, a program supported by funds from our Outreach Ministry

Earlier this year I attended the Clean Water U, the training school of Living Waters for the World in Hopewell, Mississippi. Clean Water U is a five-day simulation experience designed to equip Living Waters of the World mission teams with the skills necessary to form partnerships with communities in need of clean water, install a community-based water treatment system, and equip local leaders to lead ongoing health, hygiene, and spiritual education. With a medical background, I focused on the 102 classes, Health & Hygiene. Our Presbytery received a Haiti Disaster Relief grant for $50,000 over 5 years ago. Since that time, the money has always been used in partnership with Fondren Presbyterian Church in Jackson Mississippi led by Bill Mendenall to help fund a solar powered living waters system. This trip we are also supported by the Wyoming Presbyterian Church in New Jersey and the Walker Foundation. The grant money has helped with installations in Croix des Bouquet, Les Cayes, Saint Saveur, Savanette, Mayan, and this trip we will install in Cavaillon. Haiti has around 95 LWW systems and not one of the sites tested has had clean water before our installation. At least 54 of these systems are solar powered. This installation will be from April 28-May 4 at a school/church, Eglise Episcopale Saint Esprit de Anotte. The Presbyterian church has a growing presence in Haiti and most of our projects are with the Episcopal church. There are 192 K-6 students and 85 high school students at the school. Because there is no power available, we will use the techniques taught at Solar Under The Sun to solar power the water system. The well was drilled by an NGO group and is 80 feet deep with a water table guessed to be 15-20 feet. The electrical needs assessment showed that power is needed for 10 school rooms, 1 light for the water building, and 2 power strips with 6-8 outlets each for cell phone charging. Charging cell phones can be used to help pay for parts of the system that break or need replacing. Eventually we hope that the systems will be self-sustaining. Churches are in covenant with the school/community for two years and pay for the worker’s $57 per month salary. We will not be in covenant with this school nor have we been in covenant with any of the above listed schools. There is a local green company that we pay to install the solar panels and bring the wiring to the water building. Each school/community must build a water building to house the system and bottles to carry clean water back to homes or schools. Our money is used to pay for the water building, the system with solar power, and 5 gallon water bottles. Water is delivered to homes of the disabled or elderly. While I am in Les Cayes Haiti, Megan Rubio will be at Ferncliff being trained as a 102 technical installer at the Solar Under The Sun school. While she is there, she hopes to find a team that needs technical assistance so that she can quickly put her new skills to use. Later this year, we hope to train at Clean Water U as installers. I would encourage others who are interested in being on the SUTS committee to contact Lindy Vogado or myself about classes and installation trips.

First and Third Monday Morning Bible Study

We will meet in Second Hall for an hour and a half of study and discussion. All women of the church are invited to attend. Our study and discussion will center around Rachel Held Evan's book, A Year of Biblical Womanhood. This award winning author is a young, strong-willed and independent woman who vowed to take all of the Bible's instructions for women as literally as possible for a year. A Year of Biblical Womanhood is an exercise in scriptural exploration and spiritual contemplation. What does God truly expect of women, and is there really a prescription for biblical womanhood? Join us as we explore with Evans the rich heritage of biblical heroines, models of grace, and all-around women of valor. The class will meet on May 4. Ms. Evans will be the speaker for the Cotham Lectures at Westover Hills Presbyterian Church in Little Rock on May 3 and 4 at 7:00 p.m. Those participating in the class are encouraged to attend the Cotham Lectures. More information about the lectures can be found www.westoverhills.org.

Kindergarten Milestone “Worshiping Together”

This milestone celebration is designed for Kindergarteners and their parents. A special workshop, “Get Ready, Get Set, Worship” will take place during the Sunday School hour (9:50-10:50 a.m.) on Sundays, May 3, 10, and 17. In this special time together the children will learn about our Sanctuary and the parts of our worship services. Each family will create a “worship bag” with activities to help little ones participate in worship in a more meaningful way. Learning will be fun as we explore worship

through games, songs, and creative activities.

Youth Scholarship Fundraiser

“Letters from the Road” Beginning April 26 and running through May 31, our youth will be putting on a youth scholarship fundraiser. This fundraiser is specifically to help build our “youth scholarship fund” which is used when our youth need scholarships for retreats, to participate in the musical, and for summer trips, including Mo-Ranch, Montreat and Mission Trips. Without this fund, and with the rising costs of these events, not all of our youth would be able to participate in our SPY events. Our goal is for all of our youth to be able to participate in our events, as some of these (especially summer trips) have been particularly life-changing for our students.

For the next month, the youth will have a table in the narthex where you can pick up a card for our “letters for the road” and see the progress we are making towards our goal of raising $6,000.00. For all of those who donate money towards our scholarship fund, one of our students will send you a personal note “on the road” from either our Senior High Mission trip to New Mexico, our Junior High trip to Mo-Ranch or our Senior High trip to Montreat. These “letters from the road” are to thank you and to let you know what they are doing on that particular trip, so that you can pray for our students as they have these opportunities. Please make sure to fill out a “letters from the road” card and turn it in with your donation, so that we have your full name and address. We are so thankful for your support of our youth programs at Second Presbyterian Church. If you have any questions about this fundraiser, please contact Heather Rey, [email protected]

Stephen Ministry There are times when each of us needs the care of another person. Stephen Ministry is a program that equips lay persons to provide confidential, Christian, one-to-one care to those who are experiencing all kinds of life needs and circumstances, both in our congregation, and in our community. What is a Stephen Minister? •A child of God who walks beside a person who is hurting; •A congregation member with gifts for care giving, who was carefully selected to serve in this role; •A lay person who received 50 hours of training in providing emotional and spiritual care; •A caring, Christian friend who listens, cares, prays, supports, and encourages; •Someone who will “be there” for his or her care receiver, meeting faithfully and dependably on a regular basis for as long as there is a need. What does a Stephen Minister do? Stephen Ministers care for people facing tough times. They are ready to provide the emotional and spiritual care needed when we are faced with one of life’s crises or difficulties, such as: •Loss of a loved one •Loneliness or discouragement •Birth, adoption, miscarriage, or infertility •Accident or accident recovery •Chronic or terminal illness •Unemployment or job crisis •Divorce or separation •Spiritual crises •Aging •Hospitalization •Relocation Upon completion of the training program, our Stephen Ministers work together with our pastors to reach more people with Christian care than the pastors can reach by themselves. If you think you might need a Stephen Minister, please call Rev. Karen Akin, Associate Pastor for Congregational Nurture, 501.227.0000 at the church, or send her a confidential e-mail at [email protected]. If you are interested in being trained and serving as a Stephen Minister or Stephen Leader, please contact Karen Akin by email or by calling the church office at 501-227-0000.

When a loved one dies, one of the most common early reactions is an intense yearning, a sense that part of you is missing, and a hunger to have the person back. Sharing stories often provides solace and helps ease the heartbreak. Our church is providing a place to share those stories. On the third Tuesday of every month, our church will host a Faith and Grief Luncheon from noon to 1:00 p.m. in Second Hall. Participants will experience:

• a supportive community of persons who have experienced the death of a loved one

• comfort through scripture and prayers • encouragement through personal stories • hope in sharing your feelings and experiences.

Registration for May 19 can be made by visiting www.faithandgrief.org or by calling (469) 251-9612. If you are interested in receiving more information about Faith and Grief Ministry, contact Karen Akin at (501) 227-0000 or [email protected] or go online to www.faithandgrief.org.

Visit our church’s planned giving web page www.secondpreslr.org/plannedgiving and see new videos of our members and their stories, see examples of estate gifts and play with the gift calculator based on your interest.
