COPACABANA PUBLIC SCHOOL Effort Earns Success

The theme for book week this year is

Australia! Story Country The book parade is an event that all the children look forward to every year. The children can dress up as their favourite book character or they can dress to the theme, dressing as a famous Australian for the parade. In past years children have created spectacular costumes and I know this year will be no exception. There will be three prizes for the “Most Creative Costume” awarded in every class. Certificates will be presented by our special surprise guest at the parade. Each winning costume will receive a voucher which will be redeemed on Wednesday morning. The children will be called to the library during class time.

Thank you for your support!

To celebrate BOOK WEEK and the Children’s Book Council of Australia Awards, Copacabana Public School will hold our annual Book Fair, where students and parents can purchase books to raise funds for our school. This year the money raised from the sales at the Book Fair will go towards purchasing new resources to enhance and support learning and teaching programs. You may also like to support the school by purchasing a book for our library; an acknowledgement will be placed at the front of every book donated.

The Book Fair will be held in the library and will be open from Tuesday the 6th to Thursday the 8th of September.

BOOK PARADE Tuesday the 6th September, at 1.30 pm in the COLA.

Copa girls are off to State! The Copacabana Public School Girls PSSA Basketball team are off to the NSW Championships! The one and only other time a Copacabana PS sporting team has advanced this far in the NSWPSSA knockout competition was all the way back in 2004, so the girls are stoked! The team of Brianna, Jade, Chloe, Bella, Ash, Emma, Paris, Petra and Hayley are all in Stage 3.

From early on in the year, the girls knew they were a chance of going well in the knockout competition as five of the nine girls were selected in the Southern Central Coast Zone representative team. From that five, one of the girls was then selected to play in the Sydney North representative team. So when we formed the PSSA knockout team for Copa, the nine girls decided it was going to be their goal to advance all the way through to the NSW Championships. They knew this was not going to be easy. They were consistent and showed determination at school training sessions, often giving up two to three lunch times a week to train as a team.

Our first knockout out gala day came near the end of Term 2 and we knew it was not going to be easy. The draw meant that we would be coming up against Holgate PS in our second game. Holgate were the team that eliminated us last year and the girls knew they had a NSW representative player and a Sydney North representative player. After winning the first game of the gala day by almost 100 points, the girls kept their composure knowing that the next game against Holgate was not going to be as easy. In a hard fought game, the girls got out to a 10 point lead with one quarter to go. Holgate had a late charge, but Copa’s defence was too strong and the girls got the win, 33-29. Their final game for the day was against their ‘over the hill’ rivals, Avoca Beach PS. Avoca had won both their games at the gala day quite comfortably, by more than 50 points, so the girls were a little nervous. The game against Holgate had taken it out of the girls, and it showed with the score only 4-0 after the first quarter. After a quick discussion about putting in the extra effort when you’re tired, the girls jumped to a 19-6 lead at half-time. They went on to win the game quite convincingly, 39-14.

The girls were excited that they had advanced to Round 5, but knew they had a few things to work on for their next game. So again they trained hard at school, even playing the boys’ basketball team a few weeks in a row for some extra game time. In Round 5 they came up against Lisarow PS in the game that would decide the winners of our pool. In an extremely strong performance, the girls never looked like losing and defeated Lisarow comfortably, 36-8. This now meant that they had qualified for the Top 16 in the State and would verse Terrigal PS in Round 6. The game against Terrigal would decide the Sydney North champions, with this team advancing through to the NSWPSSA Finals Day.

Once again the girls knew they were in for a tough game as half the girls in the Terrigal team played for the Gosford Rebels rep side, with some of our girls. To make things harder, Terrigal’s coach was also the girls Gosford Rebels coach, so the Terrigal team knew about our rep girls and were all over them from the start. With the lead constantly changing throughout the game, the girls found themselves 3 points down with 1 minute to go. After throwing it in at halfway, we dribbled it up the court and got the shot only to find out the clock hadn't started, so the basket didn't count. The girls didnt let this get to them. After waiting a few minutes for the clock to be fixed, the girls got straight back into the game and scored, making it 26-25 to Terrigal. With 35 seconds to go, Terrigal

threw it in and one of our girls intercepted the pass and passed it to a team mate, who scored the basket to get Copa a 27-26 lead. The girls knew the game hadn't been won yet, with 25 seconds left on the clock. They continued the hard defence they had showed all game and intercepted another Terrigal pass, then drawing a foul, which sealed the win!

It was a courageous effort by all of the girls who showed the well-known Copa Spirit for the entire game. They worked as a team and never gave up! This meant the team was now off to Bathurst on the 12th September for the NSWPSSA Final 8 knockout gala day. The girls had successfully fulfilled their goal they had set over 3 months prior and there was no way anyone was wiping the smiles off their faces. Since the game, the girls have stepped it up another gear. With all of them practising before school and after school with lay ups, shooting and dribbling work. As well as the training at school, the girls have been lucky enough to get the opportunity to do two training sessions at Terrigal Stadium with Ian ‘Moose’ Robilliard. Ian is an ex-NBL player for the Sydney Kings and was also recently Head Coach at the Sydney Kings. He is now coaching the Central Coast Crusaders team. The girls are over the moon about this opportunity and can’t wait for their first session Friday morning. The girls have also been offered the opportunity to play against the Gosford Rebels u12/1’s team as a warm-up match before State. They have taken up the offer and will be playing the game next Thursday, three days before they head to Bathurst.

I’d like to thank all of the parents who have helped with transport to and from games and training, organising accommodation and the constant support you show to the team Without you all this would not be possible and the team very much appreciates it! Also a big thanks to Jo Fraser who got the girls hooked up with some hats from Oceania Apps. The team loved them.

The girls have already done Copacabana Public School extremely proud, not only in what they have achieved, but more so in the way they have achieved it. Always showing excellent sportsmanship! I’d like to thank them for all the hard work they have put in so far. They really have shown the motto of Copacabana PS, ‘Effort Earns Success’. From here on out, the title is anyone’s to win, but no matter what happens, the students, staff, parents and wider community of Copa already see all the girls as champions! Good luck girls!

PSSA Girls Basketball - NSW Final 8 Gala Day A massive good luck to the PSSA Girls Basketball team who will be travelling down to Bathurst on the 11th of September to play in the NSWPSSA Basketball Championships the following day. This day will be played as a knockout gala day, with the State champions being decided by the end of the day. Play hard, girls! Boys & Girls Oztag All Schools Gala Day Good luck to the Boys & Girls Oztag teams who are playing in the Central Coast Oztag All Schools Gala Day next Wednesday at Doyalson. Chris Mensforth Sport Enthusiast

Girls State Rugby League Congratulations to the girls rugby league team, who last Thursday played in the state finals of the Jillaroos Legends Sevens Shield. They played games against Cessnock, Narabeen and Berala Public Schools, winning 2 and losing 1.They placed 5th in the state overall on percentages and all showed fantastic sportsmanship and team spirit. A big thank you to the parents who helped out with transport (and first aid). Great effort girls! Well done!

Soccer 5s On Tuesday the girls and boys Soccer 5s teams competed in the Central Coast Soccer 5s Championship at Tuggerah for the first time. Both teams played 4 games and displayed outstanding team work and sportsmanship, even when some calls did not go their way. The boys finished up 5th overall, beating Wyoming in the 5th place playoff 4-1, whilst the girls finished in 2nd place! They only just went down 1-0 in a hard fought, see-sawing final against Lisarow PS. Both teams were also lucky enough to enjoy a clinic with the Mariners during the day. Thank you to all of the parent helpers who assisted with transport and to the students for displaying exemplary behaviour all day!

Last Monday, 52 students travelled to Mingara Athletics Centre to represent Copacabana PS at the Southern Central Coast PSSA Zone Athletics carnival yesterday. Copacabana placed 3rd overall by the barest of margins (3 points), and placed 1st in the handicap score by a large margin (the handicap takes into account the amount of enrolments at the school vs the school's performance). This is a huge achievement and again shows just how strong we are in the sporting arena for a small school. To accompany this strong team performance, were some amazing individual achievements, most notably Brianna and Emma, who both broke zone records. Brianna set a new 11yr girls shot put mark of 8.48m, whilst Emma set the 11yr girls high jump at 1.33m! Congratulations to the following students who have qualified to represent the Zone at the Sydney North carnival on the 12th of September:

- Marlon - 11 yrs high jump

- Gabby - Jnr relay

- Maya - Jnr 800m and Jnr relay

- Brianna - 11 yrs shot put

- Jack - 11 yrs shot put

- Tylah - Jnr 200m, Jnr long jump, Jnr relay

- Cayn - Snr high jump

- Emma - 11 yrs long jump, 11 yrs high jump

- Gabe - 11 yrs shot put

- Emmy - 12 yrs 100m, Snr discus, Snr high jump

- Tilly - Jnr relay

Well done everyone and good luck at Sydney North!

My name is Jaimi Holmes and I am currently teaching KH.

I completed my Bachelor of Teaching/Bachelor of Arts at the University of Newcastle in 2011, majoring in PDHPE and earned my first teaching position at Avoca Beach Public School on Stage 3 the same year. In 2012 I was offered a Learning and Support Position at Copacabana Public School and began working at the most incredible school on the coast. During my time at Copacabana I have had the pleasure of working on Year 1 and team teaching with the wonderful Mrs Lucas. I

have then spent the last 2 years on kindergarten with Mrs Sutton and Mr Baker and spend every moment trying to soak in just a portion of their knowledge and wisdom.

I was lucky enough to grow up in Avoca Beach, where I attended primary school before moving on to Kincumber High School. Both schools ignited my love of learning and highlighted the enormous impact teachers can have on their students’ lives. Combined with my mum being a special education teacher, I knew from a young age what I wanted to be when I grew up. I finished school and began university at the Ourimbah campus. Whilst studying I worked as a teacher’s aide at Killarney Vale Public School and was provided with countless experiences that have shaped the teacher I am today.

Outside of school I love to dance and have enjoyed many exciting opportunities including leading the main street parade in Disneyland USA. I still believe there is no feeling like performing on stage! I am

also highly involved in hockey (player and coach) and a very passionate Rabbitohs fan thanks to my dad. My brother introduced me to oztag several years ago and I have been playing ever since. In my spare time I like to be active, taking my two dogs Baloo and Luna to the beach, skiing and travelling in the van visiting other beaches along the east coast.

I believe Copacabana PS is a slice of heaven that I

have had the honour of being a part of. Between the

amazing and supportive community, beautiful

students and the collection of teachers who continue

to inspire me to be the best I can be every day, I am truly grateful for my time at Copa and look

forward to many more treasured moments and memories.

Keeping our kids safe around schools

Your child’s safety depends on you

Drop off and pick up by car

Make sure your children are in an appropriate child car seat that is fitted and used correctly.

Stick to the 40km/h speed limit in a school zone as children are about.

Look for buses pulling out – watch for flashing wig wag lights.

Always park and turn legally around schools. Avoid dangerous manoeuvres such as U-turns and three-point turns.

Always give way to pedestrians particularly when entering and leaving driveways.

Drop your children off and pick them up on the school side of the road in your school’s designated drop off and pick up area. Calling out to them from across the road is dangerous – they may run to you without checking for traffic.

It’s safest for children to get out of the car on the kerb side of the road to be away from passing traffic.

Walking together to and from school

Plan your trip to school so you use pedestrian crossings where possible.

Always hold your child’s hand. Children need your help to spot dangers such as vehicles coming out of driveways. They can also be easily distracted and wander into traffic.

Drop off and pick up your child near the school gate and avoid calling them from across the road.

Talk with your children about Stop, Look, Listen and Think every time they cross the road.

STOP ! one step back from the kerb.

LOOK ! for traffic to your right, left and right again.

LISTEN ! for the sounds of approaching traffic.

THINK ! whether it is safe to cross.

Young children can learn these safe pedestrian habits from you and continue them later on when they are old enough to travel alone.

Driving near school buses

There is a 40km/h speed limit for traffic passing a school bus that is setting down or picking up school children.

This speed limit is for all traffic travelling in the same

direction as the bus, whether the bus is stationary or moving.

The 40km/h speed limit must be obeyed when the rear wig wag lights on the bus flash.

Flashing headlights on these buses also alert oncoming motorists that children are close by.

As a driver, remember: When the lights on the bus are flashing, you must slow down to 40 km/h.

Never park in or near a bus stop or bus zone.

For information about fines and demerit points, visit rms.nsw.gov.au

On and off the bus safely

Your child is most at risk in the minutes after getting off the bus. You can reduce this risk.

Meet your child (or arrange for another trusted adult to meet your child) at the bus stop, never on the opposite side of the road.

Wait until the bus has been driven away before choosing the safest place to cross the road, then follow the usual road crossing procedures with your children.

STOP ! One step back from the kerb.

LOOK ! For traffic to your right, left and right again.

LISTEN ! For the sounds of approaching traffic.

THINK ! Whether it is safe to cross.

Teach your children to keep turning their head in both directions to look and listen for traffic as they cross the road.

While waiting at the bus stop, stand well away from the passing traffic. Never wait right at the kerb.

Remind your children that when a bus is fitted with seatbelts, they must buckle up.

Until they turn ten, hold hands with your child as you cross the road.

Social Media With the rapid growth and application of social media, it is important that students and parents who use social media either as part of school communication, or in a personal capacity, are aware of engaging in a positive manner. Risks Associated with Social Media As with traditional media, ill-considered comments and poor responses to particular issues and circumstances can rapidly develop into negative issues. This can have a damaging effect on our reputation. A particular nuance of social media is that both negative and positive stories can spread at a rapid pace and require an organisation to respond at a speed that is difficult within traditional organisational structures. Another nuance is that audiences both consume content and participate in its creation, such that a negative is-sue can evolve and develop based on the contributions of others which may or may not have any factual basis. Best Practices & Recommendations Consider what you say before you say it – it’ll be on the web for a long time! Play fair; be polite, be considerate. Report and block any negative comments, spam or people you don’t know. If you wouldn’t like it being written about you ….. don’t write it!
