2015 KMGS Officer Elections
Bryan Tallman will fulfill the remaining months of Leslie Wing's term as club President and will take over in January for a two year term. Woody Woodside will fill in as VP for the rest of 2014. Danielle Foss will continue as Secretary in 2015. Shaina Schackmann will con-tinue as Treasurer as long as her work commitments allow. We do need a Vice President for 2015. KMGS Has Been Invited to Display at the
Port Orchard Public Market (POPM)
We recently received an invitation to display at the POPM Nov. 7th (Friday, 10AM-7PM), Nov. 8th (Sat, 9AM-7PM), and Nov. 9th (Sunday, 11AM-7PM). The location of the POPM right in the middle of Port Orchard on Bay Street. We have been allotted a 10’ X 10’ area in the center of the building.
There is another event happening in town that same weekend which is called the Chocolate Festival, so all the vendors are planning some theme ideas for that event as well. If we have any gems that have a chocolate color that would tie in nicely with the Chocolate Festival.
This will be a great opportunity to promote not only our club but also the Fall Festival of Gems, which will occur 2 weeks later. Selling of items at the POPM will be allowed.

For this month: If the first letter of your last name begins “S”, “T”, and “U” with you will be responsible for
bringing refreshments for the October meeting.
We rely on our club members to provide snacks for our General
Meetings.
KMGS October Meeting Time and Place:
The October General Meeting will be held on Friday, October 10th, at 7:00 PM in the basement day
care center (entrance in the back) of Chico Alliance Church 3670 Chico Way NW Bremerton, Wash-
ington. Members with disabilities are encouraged to arrive early as convenient parking spaces are
difficult to find for those arriving late.
October Birthstones
October is another month with two birthstone choices – Tourmaline and Opal.
Tourmaline has become a favorite gemstone among jewelry designer, and gem collectors the world over. Since it is available in a wide variety of col-ors, it is ideally suited to almost anyone's taste. Tourmaline also is known for displaying several colors in the same gemstone. These bi-color or tri-color gems are formed in many combinations; gemstones with clear color distinctions are highly prized. One multi-color variety is known as watermelon tourmaline, and features green, pink, and white colors bands; to resemble its namesake, the gemstone is cut into thin slices hav-ing a pink center, white ring, and green edge. Tourmaline is found in many localities including Brazil, Afghanistan, East Africa, and the USA.
The name opal derives from the Greek Opallos, meaning "to see a change (of color)." Opals range in color from milky white to black with flashes of yellow, orange, green, red, and blue. An opal's beauty is the product of contrast between its color play and its background. Opal is a formation of non-crystalline silica gel that seeped into crevices in the sedimentary stra-ta. Through time and nature's heating and molding processes, the gel hardened into the form of opals. The opal is composed of particles closely packed in spherical arrangements. Hello Junior Rock Hounds! Jill W. will present a talk on "Metamorphic Rocks" and we will have some examples for you to see and touch. It will be interesting to see how the Earth's forces of heat and pressure change the basic igneous and sedimentary rocks into something else.

Wire Wrapping Workshop
Normally this workshop meets on the fourth Tuesday of the
month at Vangie’s house. Starting up again after the summer
break, the next workshop is scheduled for October 28th at 10

We are planning to showcase this fact at the Fall Festival of Gems. We happen to think that KMGS being 75 years old is a pretty cool thing! This is why Bobbie Sack is planning the case on current & past officers.

August brought about another Kitsap County Fair and KMGS
was there! Show coordinator Doug Leider and assistant Mark
Fawcett made preparations and then manned the area for the
club along with other club members as shown in these photos.
Many thanks to all who participated in this year’s fair event. With
changes made over the past few years, participants must now
have their displays at the fairgrounds for about a week (including
set-up and teardown) as opposed to the three or four days as it
was in past years. So to be involved in an event of this duration
it really requires a tremendous time commitment. Congratula-
tions on a job well done!
KMGS 2014 November Show Work Party
In September the club held two Saturday work parties for our up-
coming show. Dave & Kathy Reimers hosted both Saturdays.
Those in attendance were the Eslavas, Sacks, McClures, Sr. & Jr.
Shackmans, Leiders, Eads, and Terry Iversen.
We gals did Critters for the spinning wheel and the guys did case
repair. We enjoyed each other’s company as well as the pizza &

Countdown to the Fall Festival of Gems
We had a couple of productive work parties at the Reimers’ house. Doug Leider lead an electrical manufac-turing project and we made new light fixtures for our club display cases, Tony Schackmann lead the construc-tion of new case liners and Dave Reimers provided overall guidance for all the work we did. Many thanks!
Meanwhile Kathy Reimers led the rest of the group through the creative and entertaining task of Critter mak-ing and providing pizza and refreshments. Thanks to everyone who came. There is still work to be done, so we will probably have another work party before the show, contact me if you would like to help.
As time draws near for the November show, signup has been less than expected. We still need three demon-strators, for cabbing, faceting and beading. These are important aspects of our hobby and it would be a shame to miss these at our show. I do have a cabbing machine I can bring if anyone would like to use it to demonstrate.
We also need people to show in display cases. We only have 18 of the 64 cases signed up for, I don’t know how we can make up for this. I have been approached by another club that would like to display, but I think it’s important for our club members, old and new, to display their Special Treasures.
We have 35 of 84 watch positions left to fill with 12 of those at the Welcome Table and Critter Table.
As you can see, we have a lot of blank spaces in the signup sheet, it will be at the next meeting, be sure you’re signed up. You can also send me email to sign up at [email protected]

Help Wanted
I’m looking for “Kids Pages” for the Web site, Let me explain.. If you have been on the web site you can get the idea. If you have a special interest and can explain it at a 5th or 6th grade level. I need you! Any rock relat-ed lesson explained with a hundred, words more or less, and about 20 questions, true or false, or multiple choice. If it needs special images or graphics I’ll work with you to find or create the images you need. Give it a try, the kids will learn and also some adults. Give me a call or email, lets talk, it will be fun.

Officers Breakfast / Photos Needed For Special Case at Fall Festival of Gems
We want to honor the club’s officers, current and past, at a breakfast we are planning for the morning of Sun-day, November 23rd. We need some non-officer volunteers to help make it happen. Plans are in the works but still not set in stone at this point.
We need pictures of KMGS Presidents, present and past, for a special case. We would like a 5”X7” picture from you if you were a president. It can be a current picture but we prefer one from the time that you were in office. We prefer an actual picture on photo paper but a nice-quality photo on paper would be acceptable. Photos need to be given to Bobbie Sack (360) 277-0383 or Kathy Reimers (360) 731-5963 by Nov. 1.
September Meeting Minutes
The meeting was called to order by Bryan with the juniors leading the pledge. Wilma Eads announced the guests and new members. An announcement was made about our president who recently had a stroke. I’m sure he would enjoy some visitors, he’s currently at Northwoods lodge. Nancy Mahan was in the hospital and is now home recuperating as well.
Show and tell time, Bryan had some pieces to show including some great picture jas-per and some onyx. Jason talked about his jewelry he made from local finds and yard sale goodies and his own silver work this summer. Vangie has some lovely jewelry to show with channeling work which is the program talk tonight. Jan King had some finds from hikes during this summer. She traveled to a lake this summer and picked up some interesting varieties of rocks including serpentine and volcanic rocks. She also found quartz crystals nearby. Woody had some nice knapping he did over the summer. Pat talked about a dinosaur museum she visited in Glendive, MT with won-derful displays and she also found some great fossils she plans to bring next month.
There were some great large pieces of synthetic goldstone on display that Richard Peet brought to show that he purchased recently. Pat Fagan brought in some nice wire wrapped jewelry and al-ways has some fun stuff like his Seahawks necklace. Gordy Eslava had some material from a rock sale, a chal-cedony rose and some fire agate, and even a meteorite. He has Teanaway Jade as well as some nice agate that may be Ellensburg blue. Jack Eads brought his hides to show, a beaver and his raccoon hat. He also had some opalized clam shells. Glenda Moore had some Seahawk bracelets to sell to show her pride in the team. Wilma Eads had a number of earrings showing some Seahawk pride as well. Garry Mahan brought his nice intarsia work that he calls composite cabbing with rutilated quartz.
Our November show is coming up so please remember to sign up for some shifts to help out! There’s always an open slot that needs to be filled by a member. There are fliers for the show to hand out and also a sheet you can print out on the club website. We always need display cases filled so please consider doing a display case. Con-sider handing out fliers to trick or treaters this Halloween, a great idea from Pat Fagan.
Upcoming field trips are not scheduled at this time but Tony needs leaders to lead future trips. If there are any vol-unteers, that would be helpful and variety is always good. Tony would like to start looking at next year’s schedule and any new ideas are welcome. He is also the mineral council representative and the club needs an alternate to go when he can’t make the meetings.
Doug reported on the county fair and it was a success with over 300 manhours put into helping out at the booth. The club is also always looking for chairpersons to help out with the various things the club does. Break time.
Vangie did the program tonight. She had a great setup display with all of her silver working tools. She explained all the uses of the tools and briefly how to do channeling work. She brought a torch, fire brick, and a pickling jar, as well as other hand tools used in silver soldering. Her work is intricate and she suggested starting with a simpler project. She discussed the importance of patterns and making a lot of them. She uses a soldering technique where she heats the entire piece all at once with the torch. She leaves the piece on the fire brick until it is cold and then puts it into the pickling jar. It was a great program as usual. Thanks for the great time and knowledge shar-ing from Vangie. Save those egg cartons & small samples for the Scouting Clinic at our November show
The clinic and the scouts will be ready to play again for the 10th year at our annual November show. If club mem-bers have egg cartons or samples of rocks (at least 50 of any kind that would fit in an egg carton) that they would
like to donate, I will be there in November at the meeting to get them. Thank you! Mike Heesacker
2014 Fall Festival of Gems Coming Soon
Now that summer is over, it's time to start getting ready for our club's annual Fall Festival of Gems.
Have you been planning your display case? Our program a few months ago was about setting up a display case, but the most important thing to remember is that they are not judged and it's your chance to display your special treasures. We still need more cases and watchstanders and helpers, so don't forget to sign up at the next meeting.
We need demonstrators for cabbing and faceting, and there are many openings left for watchstanders.
There were a couple critter making parties set up for the 13th and 20th of September at Dave and Kathy Rei-mer’s house. This was a huge help. Thank you!
It looks like most of our tumbled rocks have been used up, so we need several hundred pounds for the grab bags for our Wheel at the show. We get most of the tumbled rocks from club members so if you would like to donate some bring them to the next meeting and see either Doug Leider or myself. Important dates and times to remember:

Monthly club raffle
As usual there will be raffle tickets sold at the entry door located where you come into the meeting. Tickets are
50 cents each. If you wish to donate something to the raffle, just bring it in and set it on the table. Raffle tickets
are drawn until all items on the table are gone. Money from the raffle is used to pay our monthly rent at the
church.
Monthly Silent Auction
There will be a silent auction at the October club meeting. There is usually one table set up for adults and anoth-
er one set up for juniors. If you wish to donate something to the silent auction, please give it to Doug Leider at
the meeting.

Hard Rock Beaders
Our Club’s beaders meet twice a month - 1st and 3rd Wednesdays – (October 1st and October 15th) at the Silverdale Vintage Apartments at 6:30. Even if you don’t have a project to work on, come out to help put our cabochon kits together for the November Show. Learn a new technique or work on any project. Call Glenda for any questions.

The easy to find Vintage is the large yellow complex above the Target store in Silverdale. Best parking is in the upper most parking lot behind the building, or in any un-numbered space. Field Trip Planning Meeting
I will be hosting a field trip committee meeting on the 15th of Oct. at 7pm at the Sunnyslope Improvement As-
sociation facility located at 5830 Old Clifton Rd SW. We will be planning 2015 field trips. This is a nice thing
to get completed early so people can mark their calendars and plan ahead. Any and all members are wel-
come to participate as it will be for the club. There will be no scheduled trips between now and the New
Year, so if you really want to go somewhere please contact John Hubbard for an impromptu trip. John never
knows his work schedule until 2 weeks prior to the date and he is very flexible on the days he does not work.
I would also like to inform everyone that hunting season is open so be careful & wear bright colors if you
plan to want to go rock hounding at this time. Tony Schackmann

“The Hard Rock News” is the Official Publication of the Kitsap Mineral and Gem Society. Meetings are held at 7:00 PM on the second Friday of most

The object of the Society is to provide a general dissemination of knowledge pertaining to the earth sciences; to sponsor regular meetings and field trips for
