Activities and educational events in- cluded a half-day seminar with talks by Professor Werner Rebsamen, HBI/LBI technical consultant, and Douglas Nishimura, research scientist, Image Permanence Institute: and others; a 75th anniversary dinner celebration where those who made significant contributions to the industry were recognized; and tours of three binderies including Bound to Stay Bound, PermaBound, and R & R Bindery. Angela Bole (see below), Deputy Executive Director, Book Industry Study Group, addressed the group and two new Board of Director members were installed: Alan McIntire, R & R Bindery, and Ted Greene, GP2 Technologies. Presentations from the meeting are now available on the website, www.hardcoverbinders.org. Each registered company was given a commemorative 75th anniversary photobook and leather bound limited edition photobooks were made available for sale. Those interested in purchasing the photobook ($40) or limited edition photobook ($50) should contact the office, 561- 745-6821, by December 15, to receive these books at the discounted rates. Many thanks to Suzanne Wiersma, Wal- laceburg Bookbinding, for creating the book; to Mark Hancock, Utah Bookbinding, for print- ing the book; and to our photobook sponsors who helped to support the book’s production: Columbia Finishing Mills, 2010 Fall Conference and 75th Anniversary Celebration A Success! Amazon Best of the Month, January 2008: One of the earliest Jewish religious volumes to be illuminated with images, the Sarajevo Haggadah survived centuries of purges and wars thanks to people of all faiths who risked their lives to safeguard it. Geraldine Brooks, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of March, has turned the intriguing but sparely detailed history of this precious volume into an emotionally rich, thrilling fictionalization that retraces its turbulent journey. In the hands of Hanna Heath, an impassioned rare-book expert restoring the manuscript in 1996 Sarajevo, it yields clues to its guardians and where-abouts: an insect wing, a wine stain, salt crystals, and a white hair. While readers experience crucial moments in the book’s history through a series of fascinating, fleshed-out short stories, Hanna pursues its secrets scientifically, and finds that some interests will still risk everything in the name of protecting this treasure. A complex love story, thrilling mystery, vivid history lesson, and celebration of the enduring power of ideas, People of the Book will sure-ly be hailed as one of the best of 2008. --Mari Malcolm
