The study, held over a 9-month period, sought to analyze today’s e-book consumer, why someone acquires an e-book or e-reader, how long con- sumers have been acquiring e-books, and which e-read- ers consumers like best. The study also sought to uncover whether consumers where purchasing fewer print books as a result of the e-book surge and what consumers think are the pros and cons of e-books and e-readers. BISG surveyed hundreds of e-book consumers to evalu- ate their real-time purchases and reading habits. At three points within the nine-month period, January 2010, March 2010, and July 2010, consumers were evaluated with regards to: Gender, income, and geographical location; Most selected e-book genres; Reasons why some chose not to purchase a dedi- cated e-reader device; Top websites visited for acquiring e-books. During the first survey evaluation in January, consumers were assessed as to the reasons they acquired an e- book. The survey found that 65% of respondents said that obtaining a free e-book or some portion of the e-book (i.e. a chapter) for free were factors that lead them to make a purchase. Online and print reviews were also significant in the consumer purchase of an e-book whereas print ads and online recommendations were not as effective. During the March evaluation period, when consumers were re-surveyed with the same questions, again, obtain- ing free e-books was the major factor in actual purchases, BISG Conducts Study on the Consumer Use of the E-Book up 2% from January. Also up was the effectiveness of online book reviews, which increase by 4% from January. With regards to online recommendations, findings re- mained the same. The report notes, “Despite the explo- sion of networking, recommendations via Twitter and other such sites had relatively little impact in spurring e-book purchases.” The final survey report, released last month, is available for purchase on the BISG website, www.bisg.org. Also available is a real time reporting feature that allows you to “gain access to all three industry surveys, when you want it, how you want it via a web-based portal called Real Time Reporting (RTR).” Information for this story was taken from materials made available on the BISG website. Our own new standard is based on performance and as long as a binder has valid proof and doc-umentation of equal or superior strength, those bindings then do, at least in my professional opin-ion, meet our standard.

One thing to note is that binding books with PUR is no easy task and it requires special handling. One thing to be aware of is once you fill the glue pot with PUR you need to use all of it and discard the rest.
