CHICAGO - TheGreatRecessionmayhavecometoanend,buthard-pressedAmericanscontinuetoturntotheirlocallibrariesforhelpinfindingajoborlaunchingtheirownbusiness.ThisandotherlibrarytrendsofthepastyeararedetailedintheStateofAmerica’sLibraries,2011,releasedduringNationalLibraryWeek,April10-16,2011,bytheAmericanLibraryAssociation.

Evenasbudget-cutterstakeaimatlibrariesandtheirser-vices,morethantwo-thirdsofthe1,000-plusadultscon-tactedinasurveyinJanuarysaidthatthelibrary’sassis-tanceinstartingabusinessorfindingajobwasimportanttothem,accordingtothepoll,conductedfortheAmericanLibraryAssociation(ALA)byHarrisInteractive.

Sixty-fivepercentofthosepolledsaidtheyhadvisitedthelibraryinthepastyear;womenaresignificantlymorelikelythanmen(72percentvs.58percent)tofallintothiscategory,especiallyworkingwomen,workingmothersandwomenaged18-54.Overall,58percentofthosesurveyedsaidtheyhadalibrarycard,andthelargestgroupwas,again,women,especiallyworkingwomenandworkingmothers.Collegegraduatesandthosewithahouseholdincomeofmorethan$100,000werealsowellrepresentedamongcardholders,accordingtothesurvey.

Thirty-onepercentofadultsrankthelibraryatthetopoftheirlistoftax-supportedservices,andastudyconductedinPhiladelphiashowsthattheirtaxesareinfactwellspent.TheUniversityofPennsylvania’sFelsInstituteofGovernmentconductedaneconomicimpactstudyoftheFreeLibraryofPhiladelphiathatprovidedbottom-lineevi-dencethatthereturnoninvestmentinlibraryservicemorethanjustifiesthecosts.

Thestudyconcludesthatthelibrarycreatedmorethan$30millionworthofeconomicvaluetothecityinfiscal2010andthatithadaparticularlystrongimpactonbusi-nessdevelopmentandemployment.Italsoshowedthathomeslocatedwithinaquarter-mileofabranchlibrarywereworthanaverageof$9,630morethanhomesout-

sidethatradius,anindicationthatthepresenceofalibraryisassociatedwithlargerrealestatetaxrevenues.Nevertheless,mediareportsofcutsandcutbackstolibrarybudgetsandservicesaboundedin2010andearlythisyear.U.S.mayorsreportedinNovemberthathours,stafforservicesatlocallibrarieswastheNo.2budgetareathatbeencut,secondonlytomaintenanceandservicesatparksandgardens.Andanotherstudyindicatedthat19statesreportedcutsinfundingforpubliclibrariesfromfiscal2010tofiscal2011andthatmorethanhalfsaidthecutsweregreaterthan10percent.Thatstudyalsofoundthatstatecutsoftenwerecompoundedbycutsatthelocallevel.

Otherkeytrendsdetailedinthe2011StateofAmerica’sLibrariesReport:

• TheavailabilityofwirelessInternetinpubliclibrariesisapproaching85percent,andabouttwo-thirdsofthemextendwirelessaccessoutsidethelibrary.Computerusageatpubliclibrariescontinuestoincrease.

• Almostallacademiclibrariesoffere-books,asdomorethantwo-thirdsofpubliclibraries.Formostlibraries,e-booksareonlystillasmallpercentageofcirculateditems–butrepresentthefastest-growingsegment.

• Abattleoverthefutureofwidelyusede-bookswasjoinedinMarch,whenHarperCollinsannouncedthatitwillnotallowitse-bookstobecheckedoutfromalibrarymorethan26times,raisingthepossibilitythate-booksthatarenotrepurchasedwouldbeavailableatthelibraryforonlyaboutayear.

• Studentsandfacultyareusingacademiclibrariesmorethanever.Duringatypicalweek,academicli-brarieshadmorethan31millionsearchesinelectronicdatabases,answered469,000referencequestionsandmade12,000grouppresentations.Atthesametime,manyacademiclibrariesaregrapplingwithbud-getreductionsandsubsequentrestructuring.

• Taxpayersentrustedlibrarieswiththeirtaxdollarsbyapproving87percentofoperatingmeasuresonballotsacrossthecountry.

• Libraries,bookstoresandindividualsnationwidecon-tinuetobattlecensorship,andthousandsofpeoplereadfrombannedorchallengedbooksduringBannedBooksWeek(Sept.25–Oct.2,2010).LeadingtheTopTenListofFrequentlyChallengedBookspublishedannuallybytheALAOfficeforIntellectualFreedomwere“AndTangoMakesThree”(byPeterParnellandJustinRichardson),“TheAbsolutelyTrueDiaryofaPart-TimeIndian”(byShermanAlexie),andAldousHuxley’s“BraveNewWorld,”whichhasbeenstimulat-ingwould-becensorsalmostcontinuouslysinceitspublication–in1932.

• Schoolexpendituresoninformationresourcesde-creased9.4percentfromthepreviousyear.Neverthe-less,theaveragenumberofhoursschoollibrarystaffspenteachweekdeliveringinstructioncontinuedtoincrease(0.5hoursmorethanin2009,foratotalof15hours).

• Thelibraryprofessioncontinuesitseffortstomakeitsranksmoreaccessibletominoritiesandtostrengthenitsoutreacheffortstounderservedpopulations.TheALA’sSpectrumScholarshipProgram,forexample,awarded75scholarshipsin2010tomembersofunderrepresentedgroupstohelpthempursuemas-ter’sdegrees.AndtheFamilyLiteracyFocusinitiative,launchedby2009-2010ALAPresidentCamilaAlire,encouragesfamiliesinethnicallydiversecommunitiestoreadandlearntogether.

• Toturnchildrenintolifelongreaders,librariesarebuildingspacesascreativeandplayfulastheiryoung-estpatrons.Andthosespacesarebecominggreener:Environmentalsustainabilitycontinuestogaintheattentionoflibrarydesigners,withanumberofnewlibrariescertifiedundertheLeadershipinEnergy&EnvironmentalDesign(LEED)program.

• Thelibrarycommunityisbothstrugglingtokeepupwiththedigitalrevolution––andenvisioningafuturethatincorporatesnewphilosophies,technologiesandspacestomeetallusers’needsmoreeffectively.Asoneanalystnotes,thechanges“gobeyondmerelyin-corporatingtechnologicaladvancestoincluderethink-ingtheverycoreofwhatdefinesalibrary—[a]senseofplace,ofservice,andofcommunity.”

A third generation family owned operation, Au Vêtement du Livre Flexibility is in the business of perfect binding, case binding, and sewing. They offer menu binding, fancy boxes, game boards and more. The business is run by Frédéric Savard and second by Martin Sirois, outstanding entrepreneur. This small but versatile plant employs thirty individuals and is one of its kind in Canada. Au Vêtement du Livre is a striving business with innovative ideas.

Transcontinental Printing is a leading book printing company in North America, and the largest in Canada. They have the ability to offer publishers a complete range of hard and softcover book printing and finishing services, for both short and longer runs. They also do digital book printing, short-run book printing as well as custom-ized versions of a single publication. They routinely work with book publishers to help them with choices regarding, printing technology, binding options, distribution chan-nels, and inventory management.

Bindingbookswithinksandtonersinthegutterhasalwaysbeenproblematic.Water-basedadhesives,likePVAs,areoftenrejectedbyoilysubstancesintheinks.Somedigi-tallyprinteditemswithtoneroilsorworse,polydimethylsiloxane,usedforfusing,cancausemanyproblemswithbinding.Bindingswithhotmeltaresubjecttoinsidiousink-solventmigration.Bindersandmachinerysuppliershavealwayssearchedforsolutionstocopewiththeseon-goingproblems.Notching,sanding,andmicro-groovingwerealleffortstosecuresolidinkandtonercoveredsheetsintoanadhesivebinding.Unfortunately,somebinderssimplygaveupandsecuredtheirbindingswithstaplesorside-sewing.TheveryfirstattemptsatbindingwithPURweremadeinthelate1980s,butittookanotherdecadeforbindingwithPURadhesivestobecomeacommercialsuccessforlargebindingfacilities.InvestmentsinPURadhesiveapplicationsystemswere,atthattime,expensiveendeavors,whichcouldsetacompanybackhundredsofthousandsofdol-lars.

OnlysincethelastDrupahaveweseensmallerPURadhesivebindersemerge.Butmostofthemstillrequiredacostlypre-melterandapplicatorsystem.Thisisnowchanging.

In2009,anengineerinItaly,MarioLorenzi,introducedasingleclampPURadhesivebinder,capableofadd-ingsinglefoldedendpapersthatcouldlinethemupflushwiththebindingedge.Inaddition,hisbinderfeaturedtheapplicationofthespinewithareinforcingmaterial.Thesewerejusttherightfeaturesforasmallbinderdesignatedforhardcoverbindingendeavors.Butaswithsomanynewdevelopments,therewereproblemsandbugsthatstillneededtobeaddressed.

Tomyknowledge,therewerejustacoupleofthesebind-ersoperatinginNorthAmerica.However,itwasrecog-nizedtobetherightsolutionforushardcoverbinders.Schmedt,aGermancompanyknownforbeingEurope’smajorsupplierforsmallbookbindingmachineryandma-terials,firstadaptedthisconceptandthenre-engineereditwithallGermanelectronicsandcontrols.Called“Präzi-Pur,”itbecameaninstantsuccessinEurope.IntheGermanbookbindingjournal“Bindereport”IreadmanysuccessstoriesfromPhoto-LibraryandsmallOn-DemandBinders.Theycouldacquirearelativelylow-cost,smallbinder,capableofbindingdifficultitems.TheengineersatGP2,workingcloselywithSchmedt,noticedthesamething;howevertheydidnotwanttoimportthisbindertotheNorthAmericanmarket.Theylookedatitandfoundmanymorewaystoapplysome“YankeeIngenuity.”After1½yearsoffurtherdevelopment,theengineersatGP2willmakeaformalintroductionofthisnewPURbinderatourupcomingseminarinQuebecCity.

ThePräziPurisasingleclampbinder,withseveralmodelsavailable.Thisarticlefocusesonjusttheonedesignedforhardcoverbindings.Thebook-block,includingthefoldedendpaperstobebound,isinsertedintotheopenclamp.

Thosearetheinterestingworkingcycles.Thebinderfea-turesaclosedadhesiveapplicationsysteminwhichPURisdeliveredin2kgcartridges.TheactualPURapplicationisdonewithanextrusionhead.Thewidthisautomaticallyrecognizedandtheapplicatorheadadjustedaccordingly.DuringtheQuebecseminar,TedGreenewillexplainmanyotherfeaturesandoptions,likeanautomaticcleaningdevicefortheextrusionsystem,side-gluing,howmanybookblockscanbeboundwithasinglecartridge,acostcomparisonwithPVAandotheritems.Needlesstomen-tion,allsettingsareeitherautomaticoraredoneviaatouch-screen.

WillPURbindingscompeteorreplacedoublefanbind-ings?ThisisatopicIhavecoveredformanyyears,andevenasIwrotethearticleforthisnewsletter,wereceivedanotherinquiryfromalibrarybinderonthissubject.OurnewStandardisbasedonperformance.Ifyoucanprovethatanewprocessormaterialisasgoodasorbetterthanonethatisbeingused,youhaveago.IntheMarch2003issueofThe Endpaper,IdiscussedPURapplicationsanditssafety.IntheDecember2008issue,IdiscussedtheuseofPVAand/orPURinLibrarybinding.IalsostatedthatresearchindicatesthatPURadhesiveswilllast500ormoreyears.Afterapplicationandcuring,Ilearnedthattheyreleasenotoxicfumes.ThePräziPurhas,asstated,aclosedadhesiveapplicationsystem.ThereisnodangerofMDI(MethyleneDiphenylDiisocyanate)fumesforanoperator.Oncecured,PURiscompletelysafe.Itisalsorecyclable—itwillwashoutofthepulp.

IbelieveinthefuturePURadhesiveswillcompetewiththedouble-fanbindingprocess.Atourupcominghardcoverbindingseminar,BrianBairdwillgiveyousomeinsightsintohowtheBridgeportNationalBinderyhassuccessfullyimplementedhardcoverbindingwithPUR.Brianjustpub-lishedanextensivearticleinThe Serials Librarian withthetitleof“PolyurethaneAdhesivesforuseinLibraryBinding.”

Whataboutthecost?Whilepricecomparisonscanvarywidely,thedifferencecanbeaslittleasafractionofapen-ny.Itisimportant,however,nottocomparecostsalone.Thinkabouthowmuchtimeisspentcleaning-upyourdouble-fanbinder?OnthisnewPURbinder,thatvaluabletimeisvirtuallyeliminated!Thereareotherimportanttimeconsiderationsaswell.Whileittakes24hoursforaPVAtodryandreachitsstrength,aPURboundbookblockcanberoundedandbackedin4hours.

Insummary,thisnewGP2PURbinderwillofferentirelynewopportunitiesforsingleandshortrunbindingtasks.I’msureweallwilllookforwardtowhatdetailsTedGreenewillsharewithusatourupcomingmeeting.
