There is only one question: how to love this world. I think of her rising like a black and leafy ledge As we continue through spring and move into summer, ask yourself how you can love this world. In what ways haveguns become an idol in our culture?Join us from 7:30-9:00 in Covenant Hall to explore thesequestions and to consider how peopleof faith may be called to respond to thiscrisis.

Picnic Potluck

Summer is a time when we historically have many visitors “checking out” Bradley Hills. Outreach and New Members Lay Ministry asks everyone to continue to welcome the people God sends through our doors.

Here are some ideas for how you can help Bradley Hills continue to be a welcoming church:• If you see an unfamiliar face, introduce yourself.• Wear your name tag.• Invite visitors to have a cup of coffee or glass of lemonade.• Introduce visitors to other members.• Encourage visitors to take home a red Welcome Visitors folder.• Take visitors on a mini-tour of the Sanctuary, Covenant Hall, and other parts of the building. Show them our beautiful baptismal font, stained glass windows, or the bimah in Covenant Hall.• Depending on their interests, tell them about our programs and mission projects—our Kitchen Ministry, Bible Music Camp, Chancel Players, interfaith events, etc.• Introduce visitors to David, Juli, or Noelle. • Offer to get visitors a Visitor Information card from the Sanctuary pews so we have names and contact information for David’s follow up. Leave the visitor card in Linda Reynolds’ mailbox in the outer office.

Thank you!Outreach and New Members Lay Ministry

Saying Goodbye to Pastor Juli: As her time at Bradley Hills winds down, the Deacons want to wish our Interim Associate Pastor a fond farewell and thank her for advising the Board of Deacons these past eighteen months. During her time with the Deacons, Pastor Juli has led us spiritually, organized retreats and meetings, provided very wise counsel, and most importantly, moved us "to model God's compassion and hospitality" as we serve the members of our Congregation. She has guided us with beautiful grace and joyful spirit. We wish her the very best in her life journey and want her to know that she will be missed.New Pictorial Directories are now available: The new pictorial directories include photos of over 200 church members and staff along with addresses and contact information of all members. Distribution of the new pictorial directories began on Sunday, May 12 and will continue through June. Check in with the Deacon of the Week, who is located in the main office on Sunday mornings, to arrange to receive your copy. For questions concerning the directory, you may contact Deacon Cheryl Naulty at 301-279-2737 or [email protected] Home Potluck Dinners: Nearly sixty adult members and ten children joined in an evening of fun, food and fellowship at the In Home Potluck Dinners held on Saturday, May 11. The dinners were hosted at the homes of: Owen & Nancy Cylke, Lou & Pat Kallas, Sara & Stephen Jordan, Cathie Lutter & Todd McCreight, Carl & Patty Goforth, and, Rick & Judy Arndt. These potluck dinners continue to be one of the best fellowship opportunities at Bradley Hills where folks get a chance to relax and get to know each other better. So, mark your calendars now for the Fall In Home Potluck Dinners on Saturday, November 9. For more information, please contact Deacon Lisa Suggs at 301-469-4853 or via email at [email protected].

Stay Tuned! Your Deacons are busy working on Summer and Fall activities to help us stay connected...

Happy Father's Day!Would you believe that Father's Day was the brainchild of a woman?

Recognition of the third Sunday in June as Father's Day occurred first at the request of Mrs. John Dodd, born Sonora Smart, of Spokane, Washington, on June 19, 1910. The idea of a Father's Day celebration came to Mrs. Dodd first while listening to a sermon on Mother's Day in 1909.Her own father was a Civil War veteran and was widowed when his wife died in childbirth. He accomplished the amazing task of raising six children -- Mrs. Dodd and her five brothers. The sacrifices of her father on their Eastern Washington farm called to her mind the unsung feats of fathers everywhere. With the help of her minister, Mrs. Dodd gained the support of the Spokane Ministerial Association, for her Father's Day proposal. Thus, Spokane, in 1910, was the first city to officially honor fathers with a special day. The Mayor of Spokane issued a Father's Day proclamation and the Governor of Washington set the date for an observance throughout the State. Mrs. Dodd suggestions for observing the day included wearing a flower -- a red rose to indicate a living father and a white rose for remembrance if he has passed away. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge backed the idea of a national Father's Day and in 1966, President Lyndon Johnson declared Father's Day a national holiday.

Simple Summer ServiceThink fun. Flexible. Low-stress. We could be describing a relaxing summer day, but in fact, it's the experience of teaching or assisting with summer Church School! For the months of June and July, we consolidate our kids into two classes, Pre-School (3-, 4- and 5-year-olds) and K-5th grade. Caring adults in the church (that's you!) volunteer to teach or assist for just one Sunday in the summer (or more, if you're up for it). The lessons are ready to go, you'll have a partner to share in the fun, and when your Sunday is finished, that's it! We are pleased to have Tori Northup leading the Pre-School class for her third summer, and we'll need a second adult to assist her each Sunday. Sign up with this link: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090449A5A62EA20-2013The K-5 class needs two adults each June and July Sunday. Sign up here: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090449A5A62EA20-bhpc3 Church School ScheduleOur summer schedule will begin Sunday, May 26, with one service at 10:00 a.m. (no church school). The summer Church School schedule is as follows, beginning June 2. 3-5 Year Old Class (June 2 - September 8)Runs every Sunday with the exception of August 25 for our Bible Music Camp celebration. Kindergarten-5th Grade (June 2 - July 28)K-5th graders will join together for a multi-age educational enrichment program in Memorial Hall led by adult volunteers. This group will take a break for the month of August and resume on September 8. Children are also always welcome to remain in worship with their families. Everywhere Fun FairThis is the theme for this year's Bible Music Camp. Everywhere Fun Fair takes children to a global celebration with the look and feel of a world’s fair. Children will make friends with neighbors around the world and discover that God’s love can be found everywhere, including their own neighborhoods. The registration fee is $45, which includes daily snack, t-shirt and CD! Visit this link or the church website to register. http://events.constantcontact.com/register/event?llr=whiq8ucab&oeidk=a07e74s83xd899b65e0 Opportunities for FallPlease prayerfully consider joining a team of other adults to shepherd one of our fall Church School classes. No experience is necessary, just a love for children and a desire to share God's Word. Teams rotate teaching responsibilities, and plenty of lesson plans and guidance will be provided. Please get in touch with Noelle Castin if you feel called to serve in this way.If you are interested in lending your voice to the planning and leadership of our children's programs, we invite you to join our Children's Ministry Committee. See Noelle or any current committee member (Lizzy Menard, Vicki Petrides, Bonnie Peyer, Cliff Ty) for more details. Finally, all of the links above can be found in your weekly "What's Happening" emails, and on the re-launched church website, www.bradleyhillschurch.org. And you can always contact Noelle in person, or by phone or email. God be with you, wherever you may be this summer!Children's Ministry Committee

Children’s Ministry

Many members, especially newer ones, don’t realize the resources that come with being a member at Bradley Hills. We take seriously and put heart behind the words, “being a church family.” I have lived in the Washington area all of my life but many of you don’t have a birth family close at hand. Whether or not that is true for you, there just are times in life when extra help or extra resources are needed. Not only does it take a village to raise children but also sometimes it takes a village just to get through the ups and downs of life!

I work closely with the Deacons to provide ministries of caring such as home cooked meals, flower delivery, transportation to medical appointments and other practical measures. In addition, I have wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, canes, bedside commodes, icing machines, and other medical equipment to loan when needed. Church members have donated all these items. Even if you don’t need them yourself, sometimes an elderly family member will come to visit and extra equipment makes life easier. When my husband was ill, having a walker on each floor of our multi-level house made my life easier so that I wasn’t struggling with carrying everything up and down the steps.

In order to be a family, we like knowing when folks are hospitalized or going through other crises. There is a prayer list of folks with concerns and celebrations that is sent out approximately weekly by e-mail. The folks who receive this list have agreed to pray for others knowing that sharing in this discipline with the community brings strength to individuals and families. If you would like to join in this endeavor, please contact me.

I do a lot of visiting in hospitals, assisted living facilities, and rehab facilities so that talking to me when planning for rehab or looking for home care or just planning for future needs can be very helpful. Over the years, I have learned about many community supports of which many people are not aware. I have even been about to help folks find resources in other cities and states when there is long distance caregiving involved.

I try to rotate the supply of pamphlets and other items of information found in the hallway outside of my office. Pay particular attention to the “Care Notes” located to the right of the doorway just beyond the gathering space. I am in the process of ordering titles applicable to younger families though I also have many items having to do with caregiving and grief. You are welcome to take these pamphlets home or pass them along to friends but, if you have read them and don’t want to re-read, please return so that others may enjoy. They are more expensive than they look!

When I became the Parish Nurse at Bradley Hills, I developed a logo to symbolize the components important to me in Faith Community Nursing – a cross to express Christianity, a stethoscope to show nursing skills, and a heart to express God’s love for us and my love of people. I look forward to joining with you in living the abundant life God intends for us all. Please call or e-mail if you would like to talk.

Blessings,

Joanie Friend, RN, BS, FCN Faith Community Nurse [email protected]

In our country summer has long been synonymous with vacation. Fifty years ago summer vacations were for visiting extended family and short road trips. Commercials showed families and friends gathered around picnic tables covered with lemonade and iced tea and bowls of homemade food staples while children played in the yard. Summers today are often loaded with expectations of big travel and high energy entertainment. Commercials today suggest we must visit very expensive amusement parks or head for the city, mountains, or beach for a packaged vacation plan.Summers are not the relaxing breaks from routine that they used to be. Summers require a lot of us these days. There are more demands on every member of the family. There are summer camps and sports activities for youth and children. Often adults are trying to find time off while juggling around meetings or vacation schedules of coworkers. And to take an actual vacation takes a great deal of planning and often is very expensive. Summers can be much more frustrating and demanding than the more programmed times of the year.Summer invites us to be very intentional about taking care of ourselves. It is helpful to stop for some good deep breaths before making decisions. Try to include the whole family in planning for use of time. It can be helpful to plan small getaways – day trips, fairs, and festivals. Even though the weather is steamier, it is important to stay with an exercise schedule. Summer is a good time to connect with friends and families in a casual, more informal way. Take time to look at the world the way St. Francis did, noticing the creatures that run around the yard or fly among the trees and plants. Take time to sit with God and be grateful for all that is a part of your world. Be intentional about doing things that will provide rest and refreshment for you.If this season seems overwhelming to you, please talk with one of the pastors. And if you think counseling might help you through a struggle, please contact me. Barbara Jaquette, Pastoral Counseling and Care Ministries, 410-234-9734 or 1-888-626-2273, x2.

Join us as we support the Darfur Interfaith Network of congregations all around the DC/MD/VA area. We have been demonstrating outside the Sudanese Embassy for seven years, asking for the genocide in Sudan to stop. We gather on the third Sunday of each month, from 1:30 - 2:30, and this summer that will be June 16th, July 21st and August 18th. Please join us in front of the Sudanese Embassy at 2210 Massachusetts Avenue, which is 3 blocks from the DuPont Circle Metro and around the corner from the Church of the Pilgrims, where we are able to park.

Families are welcome and teenagers can earn service hours. One of our many signs reads "Honk for Darfur" and a lot of people do. We remind the world that we should not forget those in dire trouble.

Both the church and synagogue have members on the board of the Darfur Interfaith Network, and they are supported financially by the BHPC Mission Coordination Council. A school has been built in Turalei, South Sudan, by Sudan Sunrise and the Manute Bol Foundation. This year we are raising money to build desks and shelves for the school. We helpedbuild a kitchen last year. Our church makes a difference!
