Congratulations to members of the first graduating class of

UBC Okanagan. You have begun a tradition of excellence

and achievement that will have a profound impact on this

community for years to come.

Graduation is the most important day in any university calendar.

It is the day when you are finally rewarded for your years of

hard work, very little recognition and very little money. You

have learned, grown and matured during your time at UBC

Okanagan, and you leave with a real sense of accomplishment.

Graduation is also a time of new beginnings. With this part of

your life completed, you will move on to new challenges and

new opportunities. As alumni of this exceptional university,

you will help shape and develop our Okanagan communities:

you will operate our businesses, manage our resources, provide

health care, teach our children, provide political leadership and

nourish our culture.

At the same time, you have been prepared to approach issues

from a global perspective. UBC has taken its place on the world

stage, and our work touches lives and economies far beyond

our borders. As an institution, UBC has embraced the needs,

opportunities and energies of our times, and you have been well

equipped to deal with these at home and abroad.

The architect of UBC’s development as a global university is our

President, Martha Piper, who is retiring from the university this

year. Her passion and her dedication have defined UBC for the

21st Century, and her vision – to create global citizens at home

and abroad – will be her lasting legacy.

Our greatest responsibility as educators is to provide you with

the tools you need to be successful in a complex, competitive

and challenging world. The education you have received at UBC

is the best any university can offer. It forms the foundation upon

which you will build your future achievements.

I hope your time at UBC Okanagan has taught you the value of

knowledge. I hope, too, that you have learned to recognize the

opportunities presented by change, and that you have acquired

the skills and courage to take advantage of that change.

Congratulations on your accomplishment.

Allan McEachern, Chancellor

Warm congratulations to you, the members of the Graduating

Class of 2006—the first graduating class of UBC Okanagan! You

are helping to make history, and your academic achievements

carry a double significance: they are evidence of personal

success, and they point the way for others to follow.

Your studies have coincided with some momentous events in

the world: from wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, to devastating

natural disasters like the tsunami in the Indian Ocean and

Hurricane Katrina in the southern United States. Such dramatic

developments are a painful reminder of the vulnerability of

human life, and may leave us feeling inadequate or helpless in

the belief that we can have little or no influence on the crises

and calamities that face our society.

At this moment, however, as you begin a new stage in your life

and experience, you should recognize that you can and will

make a difference, because you possess the knowledge and skills

that are conferred by a good education.

At every level of your UBC education, you have been exposed to

the rigours of critical thinking, to the complexities of problem-

solving, and to the need for risk-taking and imagination in

the creation of new ideas. Your course-work has provided you

with strong communication skills in a variety of media, and

taught you the value of teamwork and collaboration. You

have encountered people and ideas from a wide variety of

backgrounds, in the process acquiring a new understanding of,

and respect for, cultures and traditions that differ from your

own.

As graduates of the University of British Columbia Okanagan,

you now have a unique opportunity to turn your hard-earned

expertise and knowledge to good use, to become involved in

your society, and to offer your ideas and solutions with the

confidence that they will be heard and respected.

Whatever your choice of career or profession, you will encounter

challenges that call on the skills, insights, and understanding

you have developed at UBC Okanagan. These qualities will also

come into play as you learn to exercise the responsibilities of

global citizenship and move into leadership roles. Society will

look to you to help eradicate injustice, inequality, and poverty;

it will be up to you to find solutions to the social, economic, and

environmental problems that afflict us.

Over the years I have attended many graduation ceremonies,

and I have always been moved and inspired by the optimism and

idealism of new graduates as they face the next stage of their

lives in a world marked by uncertainty, conflict, and change.

Whatever the challenges that await you, I am confident that, as

a member of the UBC Okanagan Graduating Class of 2006, you

have the potential, not only to achieve personal and professional

success, but also to help move society towards the ideals of

peace, justice, and prosperity for all.

The future is yours—Tuum est!

Elders, Chiefs, Board of Governors, dignitaries, UBC Okanagan

faculty and staff, family, friends, visitors, students and graduates,

on behalf of the Okanagan Nation Chiefs and our member

communities we welcome you to our beautiful territory and to

the UBC Okanagan Spring Congregation 2006.

We are pleased to be provided this opportunity to extend our

congratulations to all the new graduates of UBC Okanagan.

You will go down in history as the first ever UBC Okanagan

graduates.

We are honoured to be part of your Congregation. Ceremony

and recognition of achievement, and the meaning inherent

in special events like this one have always been an integral

part of syilx culture, beliefs and customs. Learning has

always been fundamental to well-being and survival of our

communities. Traditionally, Okanagan people valued life-long

learning. Education and academic excellence are also a part

of syilx culture. The honoring of one’s intellect and knowledge

has always been important. The Okanagan traditions and

ceremonies awarded achievement no matter how big or small.

Announcements were made to the Nation that “this is a day of

significance to this person, (family and/or community) and you

are all welcome to share in this celebration”. The Okanagan

shared their land, their teaching, and their culture with others

and now as graduates, you too will have this opportunity to

share your education with the community. Your educational

attainment will serve you well, especially if you use it to serve

your communities!

The Okanagan Nation Alliance and the UBC Okanagan have

forged a new path of partnership and inclusion so that we can

all learn to embrace, strengthen and celebrate our diversity.

The pursuit of academic excellence will continue to advance

and transform our societies. Okanagan participation in today’s

congregation ceremony and within this University bodes well for

our future and our communities.

The wearing of academic costume is a tradition that has

persisted from the Middle Ages, when the first Universities

were founded. The regalia vary slightly from one University

to another, and within a University, according to the status

of the wearer. At the University of British Columbia, the

undergraduate’s gown is black.

The colours for the degrees being granted in 2006 at UBC

Okanagan are as follows:

B.A. — University blue

B.Ed. — White with University blue cord

B.F.A. — University blue with magenta cord

B.S.N. — Scarlet with University blue and white twisted cord

B.S.W. — Magenta

B.Sc. — Light blue

The hood for the honorary degree LL.D. is of scarlet broadcloth

lined in dark blue velvet; for the D.Sc., it is lined in dark purple

and for the D. Litt., it is lined in cream.

More information on degrees granted in Vancouver can be

found at www.graduation.ubc.ca.

UBC’s first Congregation ceremony took place on May 4, 1916 in

the Hotel Vancouver ballroom. There were 41 graduates.

• UBC’s first graduate degrees were conferred in 1919. The

first degrees in Agriculture were conferred in 1921. The first

Bachelor of Applied Science in Nursing and Forestry degrees

were awarded at the eighth Congregation in 1923.

• Students at UBC’s Vancouver campus now graduate from

12 faculties: Agricultural Sciences, Applied Science, Arts,

Commerce and Business Administration, Dentistry, Education,

Forestry, Graduate Studies, Law, Medicine, Pharmaceutical

Sciences and Science.

• Students at UBC’s Okanagan campus will graduate from

four faculties at the 2006 Spring Congregation: The Irving

K. Barber School of Arts and Sciences, Creative and Critical

Studies, Education, and Health and Social Development.

• Each year since 1919, the graduating class in Vancouver has

planted a tree to mark Congregation.

• The first Congregation ceremony on the present day

Vancouver campus was held in 1927.

• When graduating students are presented to the chancellor he

or she says “I admit you,” welcoming them to convocation,

the body of graduates that elects the chancellor and some

university senators.

• Hoods and gowns worn by graduates are lined with colours

that indicate the degree to be conferred. Members of

the Congregation processions wear colourful academic

regalia from around the world signifying their university of

graduation and highest degree awarded.

• The gowns, hoods and mortarboards worn by graduating

students evolved from clothes worn by European scholars in

the Middle Ages.

The University Mace is a symbol of the authority of the

Chancellor. It is displayed on ceremonial occasions, most notably

during the Congregation ceremonies but also during the

Installation of a President or Chancellor.

The Mace is carried by the ‘Macebearer’ who leads the Platform

Party, which includes the Chancellor, the President, and other

dignitaries, onto the stage for the Congregation ceremonies.

The University Mace will be brought up from Vancouver for the

first Congregation ceremony at UBC Okanagan. A new Mace

will be created specifically for the Okanagan campus.

VANCOUVER CAMPUS

In the fall of 1957, the University commissioned Haida carver Bill

Reid to undertake the project. Owing to Reid’s heavy workload,

he suggested that George Norris be asked to help design and

carve the Mace. The planning of the Mace took some time and

a final design was not approved until 1959.

Norris carved the Mace from a block of yew and it included

a stylized thunderbird on the thick upper portion. The Mace

also featured the use of copper that is prominent in Northwest

Coast native art. This copper trimming was designed and

prepared by Bill Reid. Norris completed the Mace in 1959 and

it was first used at the Fall Congregation where the Director of

Ceremonies, Malcolm McGregor, carried it for the first time.

1908• Provincial legislature passes a new “University

Act” establishing The University of British

Columbia. It provides for a Chancellor,

a Convocation, a President, and a Board

of Governors to manage the university’s

administration, property and business affairs,

and a Senate to administer academic matters.

1910• After a province-wide survey, Point Grey is

selected as the site of UBC’s new campus.

1913• Dr. Frank Fairchild Wesbrook appointed first

President of UBC.

1915• The University of British Columbia opens in

temporary headquarters at the former MUCBC

facilities (nicknamed the “Fairview Shacks” after

the surrounding neighbourhood) adjacent to

Vancouver General Hospital. There are three

faculties: Arts and Science, Applied Science and

Agriculture. Student enrolment in September

is 379 and total number of full- and part-time

faculty is 34.

1922• Tired of over-crowded conditions and

inadequate facilities, UBC students launch a

campaign known as “Build the University”

to resume construction at the Point Grey

campus. With 56,000 names on a petition for

the government, 1,200 students with floats,

bands and banners march through the streets

of downtown Vancouver to the Point Grey

campus. This pilgrimage became known as the

“Great Trek,” as it successfully convinced the

Government of BC to resume work on the Point

Grey site. The “Great Trek” represents one of the

greatest efforts of an undergraduate student

body in support of its university and still reflects

the spirit and pride of UBC students.

1925• UBC moves to Point Grey campus.

1940• Students contribute to the construction of Brock

Hall, the university’s first student union building.

1951• Student initiative leads to construction of War

Memorial Gymnasium, as a memorial to the British

Columbians who died serving their country.

1979• UBC awards its 100,000th degree.

1989• UBC launches the “World of Opportunity”

fundraising campaign to pay for new buildings,

facilities, programmes, and scholarships. By

the time it ends in 1993, this overwhelmingly

successful campaign raises a total of $262 million.

1993• U.S. President Bill Clinton and Russian President

Boris Yeltsin meet at UBC during the “Vancouver

Summit.”

• Dr. Michael Smith receives the Nobel Prize.

1997• Dr. Martha C. Piper becomes UBC’s new President.

• The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC)

Leaders’ Meeting brings the heads of the 18

leading economies around the Pacific Rim to

Vancouver.

2000• UBC celebrates 75 years at the Point Grey

campus—which has changed considerably over

the years—as it confers close to 6,000 degrees to

graduating UBC students.

2001• UBC opens its new downtown campus, UBC at

Robson Square.

2004• The B.C. Government announces the creation of

UBC Okanagan, centered in Kelowna.

• 3 Nobel Peace Prize Laureates, – His Holiness the

XIV Dalai Lama, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and

Dr. Shirin Ebadi – are given Honorary degrees and

participate in an unique roundtable dialogue with

Rabbi Schachter-Shalomi and Dr. Jo-ann Archibald.

2005• The Okanagan Nation Alliance welcomes UBC

onto the traditional Okanagan territory during a

Learning is not just about time spent in the classroom or

lab. For some, the most powerful lessons from their time

at university are about belonging and being a contributing

member of the university community. That need not end at

graduation.

UBC Okanagan’s vision is to provide students, faculty and staff

with an intimate learning environment of academic freedom

and mutual respect with the latest technology and resources.

The realization of this vision would not be possible without the

generosity of alumni and friends of the university. Donations

to UBC Okanagan ensure that students and the leaders of

tomorrow are provided with the best education and research

opportunities possible.

As you take a step forward towards your future, what better

way to celebrate your success than to leave a contribution for

the students who will follow in your footsteps. To learn about
