Happy New Year!
A New Training LabThe “old” computer lab at the Carnegie Library
has been transformed into the “New Dedicat-ed Training Lab.” The transformation includes a new coat of paint, new floor finish, a new larger screen, a new ceiling mounted projector, new desks, new comfortable chairs, new computers and a new seating arrangement which makes it feel roomier.
We will also be adding more classes for li-brary patrons. Classes will be offered
three times a week instead of two. We will also be offering classes on a larger variety of topics. If you have any suggestions on class topics, please call Joyce Betz at 517-788-4099, ext. 260. A list of classes for January and February are on page 7 of this newsletter.
The lab will also be available for community groups that may want to do com-puter related training for their employees or
members. Regularly scheduled LAN gaming and Genealogy classes began in December. We will also schedule appointments in increments of 30 minutes for our patrons who would like one-on-one assistance in learning how to download au-diobooks and e-books, use scanners, Skype or other computer related assistance. Please con-tact Joyce Betz at 517-788-4099, ext. 260 to make your appointment.

Freegal is a download-able music service. All
you need is your Jackson District Library card num-ber and your PIN. It offers hundreds of thousands of songs, over 100 genres of music, and more than 50
record labels, all without having to download soft-ware or deal with any digital rights management (DRM) issues. Access to Freegal is limited to pa-trons of the Jackson District Library.
JDL patrons will be able to download three songs free of cost each week. You will be able to keep track of your downloads in the upper right corner of the site. Every song has a sample clip you can listen to before you download. You can go to “My Wishlist” in the upper right corner and queue up for future music. The downloads on this site are all in the MP3 format with no DRM. This service will work with any MP3 player, including iPods, and can be loaded into iTunes. It works on both PCs and Macs.
Grzimek’s Animal Life (pronounced CHIM-ecks)
is an interactive, media-rich online interface based on the 17-volume
print version Grzimek’s Animal Life Encyclopedia, long regarded as a leading source of information on “everything animal.” This knowledge portal includes information on more than 4,000 species, covering topics such as evolution, habitat, behav-ior, ontology, conservation status and more. Con-tinuously updated, the image-rich content pro-vides a true educational experience, where users can find answers to specific questions, discover new details about animals they are familiar with, and learn more about little-known animals in new and exciting ways.
Please contact our Reference staff at 517-788-4087, ext. 234 for more information
about Freegal and Grzimek’s.
The TumbleBookLibrary is an online collec-tion of TumbleBooks - animated, talking pic-
ture books which teach kids the joy of reading in a format they’ll love. TumbleBooks are created by adding animation, sound, music and narration to existing picture books in order to produce an elec-tronic picture book which your child can read, or have read to him or her.
The TumbleBookLibrary collection is accessible online from any comput-er in the library or from home or school through a direct link on the JDL website.
Your child will have access to storybooks, picture books, non-fiction, puzzles and games and more! There is even a language learning tool that teach-es Spanish and French.
TumbleReadables is an online collection of read-along titles for elementary, middle
school, and high school students which features adjustable online text and complete audio narra-tion. Sentences are highlighted as they are be-ing read and the pages turn automatically. The collection features chapter books, early readers, YA/Teen Novels, high interest/low level books for both middle school and high school students, plus classics of American and English litera-ture. Read-Alongs are great for emergent, struggling, and reluc-tant readers, as well as being an excellent tool for ESL (English as second language) students. They are also well received by strong and accomplished readers who are excited to follow along to the nar-ration of their favorite books.
Please contact Sara Tackett at 517-788-4087, ext. 236 for more information about the
TumbleBook Library and Tumblereadables.

JDL KidsDiscover WaterFamily Reading & Science Workshops
The University of Michigan Exhibit Museum’s Family Reading and Science program returns
featuring Discover Water which is filled with hands-on family fun! This program is funded by the Toyota USA Foundation and the Exhibit Museum of Natural History so we can bring it to you at no cost!
Discover Water begins in January with Water Wonders. Participants will explore how two hydrogen atoms and an oxygen atom combine to make plants grow and paperclips float.
In February, Water World participants will learn how organisms use water differently and the ways water affects life on Earth.
March brings Water Wisdom as you explore ways we use water everyday and discover how to be more responsible stewards of this precious resource.
All programs are for children six to eleven years of age accompanied by an adult. Due to space limitations, we ask that you register at the location you will be attending. For more information contact 517-788-4087, ext. 235 or visit www.myjdl.com.
