A benign winter...

The summer beginning days are far away. Under a to-

rrid summer heat we were presenting the new EB prin-

ting technology in our facilities. More than 500 people

in our company. It still produces dizziness to me when

I remember it. I preserve a warm sensation that still to-

day covers my body, an agreeable sensation of recog-

nition of the well work done. Comexi Group with his

company Comexi as leader of the team, became strong

between the big manufacturers of the world printers

market. A challenge that we proposed to ourselves

near the summer end of 2001 and that today, in four

years foresight, seemed difficult to obtain.

But we don’t have complexes. Comexi Group has set

up as one of the most important machine manufac-

turers in our sector; innovative, creative and tenden-

cy makers, a new referent in the conversion industry

world.

Only one more difficult challenge rest: keep the lea-

dership position and to give satisfaction to all the new

customers that have trusted in us during our long

existence. A challenge that begins in 2007. A challenge

that I hope that we should share with all of you.

A benign winter… that presages a profitable spring.

A great future ahead

First of all, my best whishes for this year 2.007 at all levels and afterward I make a balance of what has represented the year 2.006 for our company. The last year has been marked by an elevated activity level in all the companies of our Group. A record growth in their sales level that has been increased a 23% compared with the previous financial year 2.005. We would like to thank you to all our clients for the trust placed in us: this sales success is an encouragement for us, and the verification that the effort we are doing to give adequate replies to the needs of the flexible packaging converter market is having a good success on the side of our customers.Technology, innovation, competitiveness and services were the motors of the actions that we were implementing during the previous exercise. Our equipment models were presented in all the companies of the Comexi Group, in an effort to offer machinery with the biggest degree of technology and competitiveness; we were also investing in new develop-ments, as the new process of flexographic printing with electron Beam curing, that we presented in our plant with the assistance of 500 visitors of the sector. This has not been the last development in which we have been investing: we have been also working in an innovating and revolutionary process for the application of special effects in the flexible packaging, in new technologies of lamination, slitting, environmental solution... all this with the idea to be able to offer new and better solutions to our customers’ challenges in which it is found the flexible packaging sector, making common cause to the globalization phenomenon, cost of raw materials and needs of adaptation to the accelerates changes of the consumption market.

All this innovating effort in product and technology has been complemented with other in different areas: it has been implemented the Project Management, an organizing model much more suitable to our type of product and process, it has been initiated the change to SAP as computing system, theme which is dealt more profoundly in the interview with Tomas Marcos which you will find in the back cover of this WWN…All these projects are related with the essential change and organizing improvement that we should approach with the purpose of adapting our organization to the always growing demand of our present surroundings.

And if 2.006 has been a year of accelerated activity, the present, 2.007, promises not to be behind it; on the contrary; in this moment we can state that we will register a new record growth and that our innovation, development and organizing improvement teams are working in a frenetic rate; we will go into details about all these projects that we are developing in the following issues of this WWN.

We hope, with WWN, to achieve the goal of spreading out a communication bridge with all of you, in order to inform you about all we are doing in order to improve the added value that we can contribute with our customers.

Thank you very much for the attention that you are giving to this issue and see you soon.

The EB application to the FW model has created a machine that

will become a new standard in the flexographic printing market

during the next years thanks to its revolutionary features.

The advantages of the FW Hybrid EB have opened a complete

new world of opportunities to us. Thanks to the great effort made

by the technician and Innovation teams it’s possible to dream

from now on with a machine that it’s able to dry the ink without

VOC’s generation (Volatile Organic Components) and with a per-

fect dot definition. A machine that has reduced his energy and ink

consumption by 50% and it’s able to get 96% of colour spectrum

without ink change with the heptachromy colour separation.

The EB + heat combination in drying will allow us to act in all the-

se works that have an enormous difficulty to be done and get the

advantages of each one of these technologies to develop

strong solutions that were unimaginable years ago.

But this is only the beginning, since the new FW Hybrid EB

model it’s ready to get perfect prints, where we will comple-

tely avoid the dot gain and where inks with a high abrasion

resistance are used to allow several coating savings that

bring up enormous problems in the actual works.

EB + HEAT PROCESS (Hybrid) WILL ALLOW US TO OB-

TAIN BENEFITS OF THE BEST OF THESE TECHNOLOGIES

TO GET THE BEST RESULTS IN OUR WORKS.

All this comes with a quality printing close to offset techno-

logy, fact that let to position our product as one of the most

quality products in the

printing market and

in the flexible packa-

ging world.

The drying elimina-

tion between colours

in the EB cold process

has allowed deve-

loping an optimum

and more profitable

machine that gets an

incredible accuracy

Comexi finds out a new world of opportunities with the new

FW Hybrid EB developmentThe new adaptation of Comexi most successful model during the latest time to the technology with a higher projection in the next years it’s here. Present and future are mixed to offer that it will be one revolution in the market. The new FW Hybrid EB it’s right here.

in register and, at the same time, a safer process for the

worker, more economic for our works and much more

respectful with the environment.

EB inks using allows getting more colour density with

only one anilox set. With this we can assure that all the

plates with 60, 70 and 80 lines won’t be a problem for

our works.

The evolution of our FW to the EB has successfully con-

cluded and we have got a model that’s able to surprise

even the expert printers worldwide, due to its enormous

adaptation capacity (EB+ heat) will allow the best results

that we never have imagined to all the printers. In con-

clusion, a new world of opportunities at our disposition.

smallisbeautifulThe new NEXUSCOMEXI and its new NEXUS POWER MID We start a new year and Comexi Group has several novelties to show. First of all we receive a new company in the group: Nexus Comexi, that appears inside our group strategy focused on creating compa-nies that could share its technologies and know-how and to get sy-nergies inside the converting world.

Nexus start its own way announcing the release of a new POWER range machine: The POWER

MID. A new solventless laminator concept with a 55 mm wide reinforced frame; R1 R2, R4 and R5

reels of 220 mm diameter and with sleeve changing in the applicator reel incorporated in the

machine.

Besides, it shares the machine configuration with the successful and powerful

NEXUS POWER, having an integrated dispenser-applicator group.

One of the other new characteristics is the capacity to resist

tensions until 70 kg in rewinder and 60 kg in unwinder, the

possibility to work with the R3 with reel or the option to

dispose the pre-conditioning cover in the secondary

unwinder.

The electric part also has been improved, getting

a new velocity of 450 mts/min. POWER MID incor-

porates a new production system named PRO-

DAT (system that gets the FMDA normative) and

it will be able soon for the rest of Nexus range.

To know more details about this new model and for

the whole product range, look up in www.comexi.

The adjustment and setting of the printing pressures is one of the most important issues in any printing job. Presco solve this problem by automatically and simultaneously setting plate and anilox pressure of all color stations at the beginning of each job. This drives down the time and material required for set-up.

How it worksWith just one click, Presco automatically adjusts and fine-tunes the pressureof anilox and plate cylinders for all colors (up to 10) at once. It uses the existing cameraof the Automatic Inspection System to measure the initial pres-sure, whilesophisticated software analyzes the image and sends corrections to the press.

Fast and simpleUsing Presco is extremely simple and straig-htforward. Setup takes about 30 secondsand can be done off-line (without the press run-ning). Once the press starts to run, just press a button and “go”.

Automatic and consistent pressurePresco ensures repeatable pressure accuracy through the use of micro-dottarget technology, ensuring excellent results every time. This enables the analysisof plate and anilox cylinder positions to further reduce set-up time.Presco provides highly accurate pressure con-

trol, for every job type and every shift, regardless of the number of colors or operator skills.Dramatic cost savings due to time and waste re-ductionPress control technology quickly and accurately achieves optimal presssettings, using innovative, parallel setting of all cylin-der pressures. For a typical10 color job, Presco reduces your set-up time and cuts your waste by up to 70%!These dramatic cost savings ensure a very fast ROI (Return on Investment).

PrescoThe automatic pressure control setting

Comexi and AVT have developed Presco. The new system to get the most profitable setting in our press machine. The best technologies are now together.

One of the most remarkable quality problems in one flexographic print is when we try to repeat the same colour and ink density of the previous work, besides to maintain the colour and density obtained during all the work, from the first to the last meter.

Factors as the formulation of the own ink colour, ink pigment concentration respect to the solvent part or the state of the anilox reels can affect us, but one of the most important and unknowed problems for the printer is, as a matter of fact, the ink tempe-rature.

Flexo inks have a different behaviour according to the temperature utilization, we would be able to summarize it in only one sentence: with a smaller temperature, greater viscosity and with a greater temperature, smaller viscosity.

This behaviour is produced without solvents contribution, only with the variation of the environmen-tally temperatures.

A cold ink (less than 18ºC) tends to flow a little and the anilox reel cell download will be deficient or not so good. We can consider this fact as a not very important

problem due to when we’ll start the work the ink will tend to rise for the fric-tion among the reel and the doctor blade chamber. On the other hand, a

high temperature is something that must worry us, because different phenomenons can appear when the temperature is increasing.

How does affect the ink temperature increase to our work?

The first consequence is the inks drying acceleration over the cliché. Due to the fast evaporation of the sol-

vent part before to place the ink over the substrate, we must use delaying elements or printing with

less velocity to avoid totally ink drying. In any case, with these delaying elements we limit the

printing velocity and we spend more energy to dry.

Also it evaporates faster the solvent parts and, in a differentiated way, acetates have a high evaporation coefficient in front of the ethyl alcohol. In this case, all the inks that are exposed to high temperatures will suffer quickly for acetates lack.

At the last we find the humidity problem, the more unknowed problem but not the less important because it’s so damaging for the inks performances. It causes fast resin deterioration and, at the same time, it causes colour changes and dirty clichés.

The solution to all these problems passes for refrigerating the inks maintaining them at 20ºC. We’ll obtain a low evaporation velocity during the ink circulation among the doctor blade to the substrate, because it will be evaporated later and very quickly when we heat the substrate in the airbox screens, at the same time, this evaporation could be done when the material touches the central drum at 30ºC. Because of we don’t need delaying elements, the solvents and inks can be formulated for a fast dry.

Ink temperature in FlexographyTo obtain an optimum printing in Flexography depends on many and different factors. The ink temperature is one of them and in Comexi, conscio-us about this fact, we study and collaborate with the best professionals to obtain the best Know-how.

EB technology bases part of its develop-

ment on a specific inks formulation that allows

the effectively of the electrons curing.

The composition of these new inks cured by EB changes

a lot compared with the typical solvent or waterbase inks

composition that flexo usually uses, fact that supposes a new

challenge in the moment to integrate these inks into the com-

plex EB printing process development.

Enviroxi, a Comexi Group company leader in machine peripherals,

has developed XTREM, a new ink recirculation system that allows to

treat all the EB curing inks as the most effective form.

The system obtains a soft, regular and adaptable delivery of the ink

without froth or gaps, fact that let to assure an ideal quality in our prin-

ting results.

The secret is in the XTREM.

XTREM: The secret is in the ink

Inks circulation system. From selfcleaning to the substrate.

Beneficios de una temperatura de tinta óptima.• Higher printing velocities.• Less dry energy consumption.• Less solvent consumption, cold solvent has more resistance to evaporation.• Less machine stops to clean the cliché. The clichés will increase its durability if we clean it less.• Works with cleaner and more evenness colours.

the old city (the ones that survive to the fire

that destroyed the city two centuries ago).

In the middle of these scenery, appears the

Comexi celebrated its habitual Agents Meeting with the finality to make a balance

about what it had been a great year and let to know to all his agents what are the

innovations and new business plans for the next financial year.

All the agents were participants in two intensive working days where treated ampli-

tude of themes as a business strategy approach, sales analysis or creative meetings

developments.

Each one of the companies that conform Comexi Group had the possibility to talk to

all the group of assistants, that didn’t doubt in clarifying all their enquires to take the

maximum advantage of these workdays.

The appraisal at the end of the encounter was totally positive, the direction was sa-

As machine-makers one of our greater concerns is the equipment optimization to make the production of our machines more profitable. We con-sider that this profit value should be based on the study of the unproductive times o stopped machine, and not only in a single superficial fact how can be the print velocity.

Good change times, the base of a great productivity

We are conscious that the works are shorter day by day, fact that causes a greater number of changes in a current working day. Contrasting the results obtained with several of our customers with the same machine model and similar type orders and meters per job, we got surprised with the variations from 30% to 70% of unproductive times between jobs, fact that seemed totally illo-

gical with these very similar ma-chines.

Jobs typolo-gy is changing and this affects directly our productivity

In a second vi-sit to the two most significant costumers, we analyzed every step and opera-tors movements when they ca-rried out a work change; we must take into account that in both cases the changes were be done by the same operators number, two for each machine.

Conclusions were very clear and forceful, being the organization and the work systematic the most important factors.

In the company with less unproductive times, we could verify that the operator got ready all the job information and neces-sary documentation before the end of the job in process, fact that allowed the worker to prepare all the necessary material to develop the next job, without need to make any enquiry neither to expect orders.

He got some elements as reels and inks without ask for. When they finished the job and stopped the machine the worker alrea-dy had the cliches cart with all the assembled plates for the next job, at the same time he also had a whole tray set, ink pumps and cleaned hoses of the colours that should be changed because of the colours variation between the jobs.

While he was finishing the last reel, his assistant or the second operator had already set up the material and the adjustments for the next job. Talking with the technical staff of this company, we discovered that they had been studying the problematic of chan-ging times and they had developed a very detailed document of each one of the operations and sequences to be developed for each operator in the process, in order to get clearly functions for each operator. Also it was perfectly planned the carry out opera-tions order for each one of them, individually and combined in order to be not interfered.

The organization of change processes can increase our pro-ductivity enormously

In the other analyzed company, work changes were made by intuitive factors, since the operator had a lot of experience and during all his life had been making the changes with this system,

without anybody indicated him that it could be done with other more productive ways. Even he set up the plates for the next job himself and cleaned the trays and ink chambers with the machine stopped.

In these two analyzed cases, considered as two different metho-dologies, there was an average difference of three hours in chan-ge times. If we analyze on averages, since the data varied in each work, all the works controlled were carried out with the same ani-lox, without variation of line model or order.

Another point that affects directly the productivity and the machi-ne life is the maintenance. Our machines are designed to be able to make a prevent maintenance without the necessity to dispose of sophisticate human and technical resources.

We always should consider that prevent is more profitable than to cure.Don’t doubt in analyzing your case, in Comexi are worried about your productivity and our objective is to be next to our customers to assess them in all and each one of the steps.

Communicate! NEW INCORPORATIONS FOR NEW CHALLENGES

The effort and the good work carried out by David Morera during the last years have led him to tur-

ning in the new Area Manager of Comexi Group for the majority of the Latin America zone.

After several years knowing and familiarizing with this area under the charge of Technical Commer-

cial, David will have now the possibility to grow professionally and to demonstrate his knowledge of

this market in continual expansion. His mission as Area Manager will be to promote the selling of all

the group products included Comexi do Brazil. His principal challenge will be to increase the zone

selling and to consolidate the existing clients in a chan-

geable situation of market. Also, it will have the aim to

motivate, personally and professionally, the whole group

of representatives who collaborate with us in the zone.

We are sure that his big dedication, effort and efficacy in

his work will manage this issue to make the Latin-Ame-

rican zone one of the most favourable areas for the Co-

mexi Group business development.

Comexi Group wants to make a continuous adaptation to the dynamic market changes and for it

is necessary to be provided with a whole professional team capable of managing new and exciting

challenges.

With this purpose, the commercial team has been provided with two new incorporations. The first

one of them is Víctor Funosas, who from the end of 2006 has been added to the

commercial family of Comexi with the charge of commercial technician inside

the east and south european market .The second incor-

poration is Yang Su, commercial Technician of NexusCo-

mexi and Area Manager of Comexi Group on key Asian

markets with a big expansion.

Both come with the illusion of the person who wants to

grow professionally in his work and Comexi will give to

them the possibility of reaching their goals and, in turn,

helping the group to be stronger on a global scale. Wel-

come!

The adaptation to the changeable scenes is not an easy task for

any company and in Comexi Group, conscious about this fact, we

are implanting a new ERP system.

We speak with Tomas Marcos, an industrial technical engineer with

more than 20 years of experience in Comexi Group. Nowadays

he’s leading the new SAP project implementation.

1. Which has been your trajectory in Comexi?I take approximately 24 years being employed at Comexi and I

have lived very closely the constant evolution of the company. I

was taking different issues inside the manufacturing area as me-

thods, mechanization management or planning, up to coming to

the operations direction.

Now, and due to the SAP project, the direction has decided to

destine my experience to the implantation of the new informa-

tion system.

2. Which will be the order and the application calendar for the SAP in Comexi?

We have chosen a gradual implementation to avoid pro-

blems, and in these moments we already have set in mo-

tion the financial module and with the forecast to get

the definitive change in the whole logistic module in the

middle of the year.

At the beginning of 2008 we will dedicate all our efforts

in implementing the advanced planning and the Business

Intelligence, which will provide us with the best manage-

ment tools.

With the purpose to get the most of the synergies inside

the group, we will take the Comexi SAU implementation to

initiate it also in Nexus Comexi. We expect that we will be

able to implement this new system to all the companies of

the group at the end of this year.

3. What progress will suppose this new plan for the company?Principally the solid integration of the system that goes

from the commercial offer up to the after-sales service, in-

cluding all the management modules.

Also, it will facilitate the communication with our costu-

mers, providers and group of companies. The system will

extend our possibilities in databases creation at the group

level, to create Internet portals for our clients and provi-

ders, etc. We are going to speak the same language.

4. What difficulties will the company find with this imple-

mentation?

It is clear that we will have risks and problems based on

the proper change more than in the complexity of the new

technology, although the people are working with a lot

of illusion and dedication and all the people understand

that it is a process that suppose an important part of the

company future.

5. Which will be the most difficult moment? It is difficult to say, but we might emphasize prototypes

tests, where we must make sure that we implement

what we want; also the migration plan that must gui-

de us in the information migration between systems

without causing ruptures; and finally, the starter process

with the final users.

6. How many people are involved in these moments in the project? For a company with limited resources and where every-

body has tasks assigned in the productive process, we

can say that we have so many people dedicated. There

are collaborating the internal consultants who must ac-

quire the Know How, the different final users of all the

areas represented in the process, the people of informa-

tion systems, our implantation partner and finally, all the

final users, who really will validate the work done.

7. What are you expecting with this project? At professional level, to achieve that Comexi has the

best system of information that allows to reach its stra-

tegic targets, and at personal level, to use this process

to extend and to improve my knowledge in industrial

processes and in changes management.

MOVING FORWARD TO THE NEW SAP
