I will be sending a variety of messages directly to the Senior Class through email and/or voicemail to guide everyone as we celebrate the Class of 2014. Please review this newsletter carefully as it includes information for all grade levels including the incoming freshmen, Class of 2018. We have included the 2nd semester final exam schedule, finals care packages order form, senior picnic parent volunteer request, summer yearbook pick-up as well as other important dates and reminders. A Message From The Principal...Dear Parents,

Well, this is it…my last letter to the Wheaton North Community. It’s hard to believe or even imagine that I will shortly be a retiree. After 35 years in education, 10 of those at Wheaton North, walking into a high school still makes me smile. There’s nothing like the energy of teenagers! I will miss that. In my first letter to the Wheaton North Community in 2004, I wrote that I consider it a privilege to be a part of this school with its outstanding faculty and staff, tremendous student body, and supportive community. In spite of some “challenging” moments, I still feel that way.

This is the final newsletter for the 2013-14 school year. During May, we celebrate the Senior Class throughout the month. The culminating activity is Graduation which will be held on Saturday, May 24th at 10:00 a.m. at the College of DuPage. I will be sending a variety of messages directly to the Senior Class through email and/or voicemail to guide everyone as we celebrate the Class of 2014.

as well. To avoid late fees, on-line registration through ParentVue needs to be completed by June 30, 2014. Again, all registration, payments, and freshmen physicals must be completed before participating in the early Schedule & Textbook dates.

The end of the school year is also a time when we say goodbye to our retirees: Jane Bredrup, counselor; Phil Britton, assistant principal; Claire Carline, secretary; Maureen Dabovich, library aide; Carol McCallum, counselor; Cyd Paulsen, science teacher, Ron Piro, English teacher, and Kevin Williams, English teacher and Activities Director. These professionals have dedicated their lives to serving our students, and Wheaton North is a better place because of their dedication and commitment.

I want to thank all of you for your continual support of Wheaton North High School. Thank you for sending us such terrific kids and thank you for all you do on their behalf. I especially want to extend my gratitude to our Booster Club officers: Suzanne Royer, Carri Loresch, Liz Grittner, and Dawn Szumski as well as to all the committee chairs and volunteers who help to make this high school – the Best High School in Illinois. Commencement. That’s an odd way to say the end (My apologies to Hubbell Gardner, the character in the movie, The Way We Were).

As we approach the end of the school year we are reminded that Commencement is the final act of high school for the class of 2014, but the commencement of a new phase of their lives. We wish them good fortune and blessings and remind them that they are Falcons forever. We will miss their presence and leadership, but we are confident that they leave Wheaton North prepared for this next phase.

As the circle of high school life goes, while we are saying good-bye to the class of 2014, we are welcoming the class of 2018. There are athletic camps and activities this summer as well as parent and new student orientations in August that will help everyone begin their transition to a new environment. Please watch your mailboxes, both snail and email for announcements. We hope that their journey through Wheaton North will be joyful and rewarding.

This is a period of transition for me as well. I will be retiring in June after 19 years in District 200. For the last three years, I have served as an assistant principal at both North and South. I have enjoyed the opportunity to meet and become acquainted with the parents and students at Wheaton North, and I have special thanks to the staff of North who accepted this “South sider” into their midst with open arms. I know that your children are in good hands with the faculty and administration of Wheaton North.

As I write this article, the weather is cold. Winter doesn’t seem to be giving up, but I know that warmer and sunnier days are just around the corner. I hope that you all have an enjoyable summer, and that everyone returns in the fall refreshed and ready for more adventures.

YEARBOOK Pick Up

August 7thDid you pay for a 2013-14 yearbook? The yearbook staff has volunteered to come in one day this summer—Thursday, August 7—for distribution. We’ll be passing them out from room 400 into the northeast faculty parking lot from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. (if it rains, we’ll probably be in the cafeteria). If a student cannot be there that night, he/she can give a note of permission to a friend or family member to get it. Otherwise, books will not be available for pickup until the second week of school.

If you didn’t order a book, there will probably be a few extra books available for purchase August 7 in room 400 from 6:00-8:00pm, then again starting the second week of school.

HRImaging/Root Studios will have a photographer at the school June 16-19 and 23-25 to take yearbook pictures of our seniors. This is the only time that the photographer will be at the school. You should receive information and a session appointment several weeks before. If you don’t receive the mailing or want to re-schedule the date/time, go to ROOTseniors.com and follow the prompts. To be pictured in the Wheaton North yearbook, you must get your picture taken by HRImaging/Root Studios. However, you are under no obligation to purchase anything from this company. Simply tell them that you want “Yearbook only” and you won’t be charged.

If you’ll be out of town those last 2 weeks of June, no problem. Students can set up their own appointment times at the Naperville (630-416-0552) or Schaumburg (847-706-9688) studios anytime between now and December 13 (the last day to get a senior picture taken) or go to Rootseniors.com and sign up there. Students will also be able to take retakes at the studios through December 13. Do not wait until the last minute as sessions fill up in December. We cannot accept photos after the December date; the yearbook staff will have already submitted the senior portrait section to the printer.

Junior, Soph, and Frosh Yearbook PicturesYearbook pictures for juniors, sophomores, and freshmen will be taken through PE, Health, and Driver’s Ed classes September 8--12. Info/details will be sent home the week before the pictures.

The 41st Annual Student

Visual Art Show May 2-3

Wheaton North High School will be presenting its 41st annual student art show opening to the public on Friday, May 2nd from 5-7 PM and Saturday, May 3rd from 1-4 PM in the wrestling gym on the west side of the building. The usual site for our annual show, the school library, is unavailable to us this year due to water damages. So, this year enter the building on the west side (door 7) or the southwest side (door 3); the show is located a short walk down the hallway. Students may view it Friday with selected classes during the school day as well. The show will feature a wide variety of work by our art students, including our Advanced Placement Art Students. Students not currently enrolled in an art class are invited to participate (please see an art teacher for information). This show is anticipated and well attended by students, parents, and the community year after year. Awards will be given in categories of drawing, painting, graphics, photography, ceramics, and jewelry. This is a great opportunity to see the effort and skill of our talented students and get an overview of the quality and depth of Wheaton North’s Visual Art program.

From the NurseFreshman School Physicals: Please remember that all incoming 9th graders are required to have a physical completed on an Illinois Department of Human Services School Physical form within the year before starting 9th grade. The IDHS school physical form can be found on the CUSD 200 website or in the main office. An IHSA sports physical form does not qualify to meet this requirement. It is expected to be turned in at the time your student becomes enrolled. Please mail or drop off this completed form as soon as possible over the summer so your student will be ready to begin class participation the first day of school. Students will not be allowed to participate in PE until a current school physical is documented in the health office. A completed school physical includes a parent portion which documents the student’s health history.

Medication Pick-Up ReminderAny medication that is now being administered to your child during this 2013-2014 school year will be ready to be picked up by you or a designated adult by the last full day of school. Please feel free to pick medication up anytime on or before that date. The medications will not be sent home with students. Medications not picked up will be discarded and will not be kept for the next school year.

Each school year we need a new doctor’s order to continue giving medication. These forms can be picked up in the nurse’s office, main office or downloaded from the district website.

Emma Crabtree, Lydia Tial Cuai, Mikayla Harrington, Timothy Hayes, Koreyan Haynes, Ardit Maloku, Ardita Maloku, Samantha Oakley, Usha Rai, Elise Roberts, Bunchanpireon Ros, Lydia Sohmer, Brianna Topps and Monica Tyler.

These students were nominated by one of their teachers for a particular accomplishment, attribute, or interaction, or for improved academics, attendance, or behavior. This breakfast is a long-standing tradition at Wheaton North and a terrific way to praise our students for the outstanding work they do. We look forward to commending more students at our fall semester breakfast next year.

Student Parking on CampusApplications for next year’s parking permits for this year’s Juniors only are available in the Deans’ Office. We will begin accepting completed applications and the $150 fee (cash or check payable to Wheaton North) on Wednesday, May 14 in the Deans’ Office. Students must have their student ID and driver’s license when they turn in their application. Parking tags will be available for pick-up on the senior schedule/book pick-up day on August 7 or any day thereafter.

Student Parking at Wheaton BowlThere are spots available for all students at Wheaton Bowl. The fee for the rest of the year is $20. Applications are available in the Deans’ Office. You must have a permit to park there.

Dress GuidelinesWith the warmer weather, we would like to bring to your attention a few of our dress guidelines mentioned on Page 15 in the student handbook:

1) All clothing must cover from shoulders to mid-thighs.

2) Transparent items, strapped blouses, strapless tops, nightwear, and items normally worn as undergarments but displayed as outerwear are prohibited.

3) Necklines must provide appropriate coverage, midriffs must be covered, and shorts and skirts must extend to mid-thigh.

Students who are not dressed appropriately will be sent to the Deans’ Office where arrangements will be made to get proper attire. Consequences will be issued accordingly. We tell students that if they are questioning whether an item is appropriate for school, they should not wear it.

Taking Final Exams EarlyStudents are required to take their final exams on their scheduled days. Students who have a conflict must present a pre-approved absence form to the Assistant Principal of Student Services a minimum of two weeks before their exams. If it is approved, it is the student’s responsibility to make arrangements with his or her teachers to take the exams before their scheduled days.

Senior Reminders• Parents should feel free to call their student’s counselor if there are any questions about the graduation status of their senior. Wednesday, May 21st is the final day for seniors to earn a passing grade from their second semester teachers.

• Seniors who are still contemplating their plans for next year (i.e. job, military, COD, or four-year college) are strongly encouraged to see their counselor as often as necessary. It is our goal that every student who walks the stage on May 24th has a clear plan for their post-secondary future.

• The Senior Newsletter went out to all senior families in April. It is also available on the wnhs.org website. This newsletter has VALUABLE information pertaining to the end of the year schedule and activities (prom, commencement, etc.) If you don’t have one, please access it through the website or your counselor.

• FINAL TRANSCRIPT REQUESTS – Following graduation practice on Wednesday, May 21st seniors will complete a Final Transcript Request form. Once the school year has ended and official grades are posted the registrar will send out student’s final transcripts to the university/college the student indicated on his/her Final Transcript form. There is no charge for this service.

Junior Reminders• Now is the time to plan your college visits. Next year will be here before you know it and you want to be informed about the colleges and universities where you plan to apply. Students should consider beginning with contrasting styles of schools, such as visiting a large and a small school, so they can begin to develop a profile of the different type of environments these types of schools have to offer. If you have a family vacation scheduled for this summer, consider including a short detour to a campus nearby. Contact the school’s admissions office to set up a tour (going directly to a schools admission website will normally give you information on scheduling a visit). You can also go to wnhs.org to download a successful college checklist.

• For those seeking admission to the most selective colleges and universities, your choice of summer activities (job, internship, summer program, travel, etc) may weigh heavily in the admission decision process. Students should see their counselor for more information or to review any summer plans.

Freshman & Sophomore Reminders• If you are under 16 and plan on working this summer, you need to get a work permit. The paperwork starts in our Guidance Office. The work permit itself is issued at School Service Center, 130 W. Park Avenue.

2014-2015 Schedule Information The courses students signed up for next year are located on Parent/StudentView in the left hand menu under Course Request. This link lists the courses students requested for next year. Some students may find that a single semester course, such as a fine art or tech elective, American Government, or Communication Studies, etc. has been shifted to the opposite semester from the student’s original request. This occurs because of subject and teacher conflicts in the process of constructing the master schedule.

It is important for students/parents to review their course requests carefully. Any errors on the list should be brought to your counselor’s attention ASAP to ensure they are corrected before the beginning of next year. However, this only applies to errors. Students will not be allowed to make any elective changes. Dropping a class for a study hall, level changes (with teacher approval), and changes resulting from failures in sequential courses will still be allowed.

All students who have registered for TCD for the 2014-15 school-year will be receiving a letter in the mail explaining the fee structure and the deadline dates for dropping the program without a penalty. Please call Wendy Biggs at 784-7307 if you do not receive this letter by June 1, 2014.

DID YOU KNOW?• After years of delays and on the eve of a lawsuit against the government, U.S. safety regulators have announced that backup cameras will be required in all vehicles on or after May 1, 2018. The move aims to reduce the average of 210 deaths and 15,000 injuries caused every year by backup accidents. Many of the accidents involve children or seniors.

• Parental Access: As a parent or legal guardian of a person under age 18, your support and guidance are essential in helping your child become a safe and responsible driver. To assist you in that endeavor, your teen’s driving record is available to you as an additional tool. To access the information for free, simply follow the instructions by logging onto -www.cyberdriveillinois.com .

• If you go to www.wnhs.org and go to the PE and Driver’s Education/Safe Driving page you can access three of the most recent presentations that have visited our Drivers Education Classes. You can view the presentation on the dangers of speeding from Dee Brant (Faces 4). You can view METRA’S presentation on safety around trains from Operation Lifesaver. Finally, you can see Commander Mike McNamara’s (License For Life). Mr. McNamara has made over 500 DUI arrests.

• Sending or receiving a text message takes the driver’s eyes off the road for an average 4.6 seconds. This is the equivalent of driving the length of a football field at 55 mph, BLIND.

• An estimated 20% of 1,517,000 injury crashes were reported to have involved distracted driving in 2009.

PLS DNT TXT + DRIVE

Please be safe when behind the wheel! Have a great summer!
