Fed by God’s Word and led by the Holy Spirit, we gather together as a community of faith,

to proclaim God’s love by ministering to our congregation, community and world.

Volume #5 Issue #1 January 2020

A Message from Pastor Chad

So… another year is over. Like an ever-

moving river, another year has past un-

der the bridge of time.

Speaking of time… I remember seeing

Time’s Year in Review for the first time

when I was a teen. Actually I had a

copy of one year on my shelf for the longest time

(ended up with a degree in Political Science, so

understandable.) It was Time’s Year in Review of

1979. Well, it was my parents, but as a young

teen, I enjoyed reading it. Maybe it was because

living overseas made me somewhat disconnected

from the country I was actually supposed to be

from. So I enjoyed looking at it, re-reading the

stories of places I’d never been, describing an

America I really wasn’t too familiar with. I re-

member one story – the article about the melt-

down at Three Mile Island, the nuclear disaster in

Pennsylvania in March of that year. I remember

how big a deal it was here in the US, with people

really beginning to loudly question the safety of

nuclear energy.

Well, it’s been 40 years since that Time Magazine

Year in Review has come out! Forty years of life –

and all things in it! For all of us! Forty years of

blessings and challenges, of highs and lows,

(remember ABC’s Wide World of Sports

show? “The thrill of victory… and the ago-

ny of defeat” – and they’d show a ski

jumper wiping out after a bad landing), of

joys and heart-aches.

This is life indeed. But through it all, I

can’t help but believe there’s a movement

of the Divine weaving in and out of our lives – all

of our lives – across all these years… and not just

these past 40 years, but through it all! Through

our whole lives!

We’ve been talking about Renew and Refresh

these last few months: about taking stock; about

taking a serious view of the past (like Time’s Year

in Review), about assessing and appreciating,

about recognizing and reflecting. It’s about rec-

ognizing and appreciating where you all as a com-

munity of faith have come from…. and what you

all have done! So we’ve been sharing with every-

one some the different and on-going ministries

and work of the people of Living Faith! And all

this is part of recognizing that Divine weaving of

God through the life and work and ministries of

the two wonderful communities that consolidat-

ed to start Living Faith! There is a lot to lift up

and celebrate!

But this process also calls us to look forward as

NEWS FROM THE COUNCIL

well. You see, this very same weaving of the Spirit

also pulls us all into a new journey ahead of us. It

may seem like a big change for us as well all go

through what we call the present. Think of it this

way – our kids, grandkids and maybe even great-

grand kids will look back and do their own reflecting

on this time – time we’re in right now! So THIS mo-

ment, right now, is JUST as important for us as what

we look back on. It’s important because we’re laying

foundations now that will mature for our descend-

ants in the future. While the “Now” is harder to dis-

cern, harder to reflect on since we’re actually living

it as we speak. It’s just as important as the “years in

review” because we’re telling “them in the future”

wo we are now, and what we stood for, and what

was important for us, what we hoped for, and what

we believed in – actually believed in.

So, as we continue to take time to Renew and Re-

fresh in 2020, let us take stock not only of where

we’ve been, but also where we ae now, and where

we’re going. Let us continue to listen to the Spirit as

we move forward. Let us be guided by that same

weaving of that Divine Mystery that guided our an-

cestors. That still guides us, and that will indeed

guide our descendants in their “tomorrow”!

So, another year is over, for sure. But you know

what? A new year has begun! A new year has be-

In the Spotlight:

The FaithWorks Food Pantry, A Guest’s Perspective

We highlighted the FaithWorks Food Pantry a couple of months ago,

however, we recently received a Facebook message from a pantry

guest I thought should be shared. It’s a message from a woman whom I

will call Maria.

“Thank you, thank you, thank you for all you give. I make all the home foods I can think of with

your generous donations. Even tamales and traditional tortillas, rice, beans, enchiladas and

much more. Much and many hugs and thank yous. It wouldn’t be the same or feel as wonderful

if your people didn’t give with such love. Thank you all.”

Maria went on to say that she does receive some benefits through FoodShare Wisconsin, but only re-

ceives $15 per month. She uses the $15 to buy staples such as flour, sugar and milk. She uses the foods

she gets at the pantry to make meals.

“You have to plan really well, and you have to know how to use your products. I see so many

who say there is no food but I see a treasure chest. I am very grateful. “

Maria shared how she uses bean, rice, bread and the meats she receives. She even sent a few photos to

show some of the meals and she has prepared.

So, to all of the volunteers (those who donate, those who help behind the scenes, or those who serve our

guests) a big thank you. What you do matters and you are appreciated for it!

Kris Kringle Market Raises $3,450.76 for the Fix It Campaign!

Fellowship Hall looked like a magical Christmas Marketplace, with lights everywhere

and beautifully decorated trees! The sounds of the Case Carolers and the Gilmore

Madrigal Singers added the spirit of Christmas to the fun shopping experience for

our guests and volunteers, not to mention the amazing lunch prepared by Liz and

Chris Kegel!

We never dreamed that “Santa’s Thrift Shop” would be overflowing with so many

treasures and “St. Nick’s Craft & Hobby Shop” was lovely and filled with beautifully

handcrafted items. Then “Granny’s Kitchen”…oh my…what a wonderful selection of homemade cookies,

candies, breads and treats! The Vendor Shops and the Tanzania Boutique were the perfect added touch to

a complete holiday shopping adventure! How can we ever THANK YOU enough for all of your donations

and the time you gave to help make this an awesome success! Rumor has it that the “Kris Kringle Market”

will be back again in 2020! It was not only a great fundraiser but it also brought us together while we

worked hand in hand, enjoying fellowship and making new friends!

The guests at the Sunday evening Community Meal program, the daily Nutrition Site and Tuesday Food

Pantry were invited to do their Christmas shopping for free with the items that remained from “Santa’s

Thrift Shop.” It brought them great joy and was a huge help to us in not having to pack everything up. God

works in wondrous ways! God bless you all and thanks again! June & Vicki

LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES

New Three Week Bible Study

Vicar Deb will be offering a three week Bible Study titled: God’s Love Shaping Community: A Look into 1 Co-

rinthians. 1 Corinthians will be part of our weekly readings during worship, beginning the second Sunday

after Epiphany, so we hope having a Bible study that aligns with the weekly readings might be both inter-

esting and fun! Specifically, there are three overall objectives for this Bible study.

1. Become familiar with the context of the Corinthian church during Apostle Paul’s time and relate it to life

today. 2. Have a greater awareness and appreciation for the many ways in which God’s love guides how

we embody what it means to live in community. 3. Identify and share specific actions, changes in behavior

or different ways of thinking that were provoked through the Bible study.

You are welcome to any or all of the sessions! Be sure to bring your Bible! (See schedule on page 10.)

Fix It Campaign & Fundraiser Update

WOW…as of this writing, we have raised a total of $16,308.14, with a current balance of

$10,023.14! Your very generous donations and ongoing support of the Fix It Campaign

confirm that the Mission & Ministries at Living Faith are important to you and that you

wish to see us continue that work! We have recently replaced two doors for a total cost of $1009.00 and

are getting ready to rekey the building and do some plaster repair in the northwest corner of the Sanctu-

ary. We will keep in touch. Thank you again!

Introducing an added opportunity to “Share Your Blessings” and benefit the “Fix It Campaign” at the same

time. Chuck and Alice Frahm have graciously given a beautiful donation box to each campus to collect

coins and dollars in an effort to keep the campaign funds growing. The box is conveniently located near

the “Fix It Campaign” poster. We have a member who is willing to match up to $7,500 of funds collected!

News from the Crazy

Scrip Lady!

It’s January and time for

“New Year’s Resolutions.”

This year, why not resolve to buy one Scrip gift

card from our program (once a week, bi-monthly,

or once a month) for a purchase you make on a reg-

ular basis. You can purchase a card for Pick ‘n

Save, Piggly Wiggly, Kwik Trip, Speedway, CVS,

Walgreens, Walmart (or one of the many other

cards available) and Living Faith will receive re-

bates from that retailer for 2.5 – 6% (or more),

AND you have the entire face value of the card to

use. For example, if you buy a Piggly Wiggly card

for $50, you have $50 to use at the grocery store,

and Piggly Wiggly donates 3% to our church. Eve-

ry card you buy supports our church’s ministries!

If that isn’t incentive enough, Scrip is safer than

using credit cards. In this day and age, credit card

fraud and identity theft are problems which cause

concern for some cardholders. By using Scrip gift

cards, all of your information stays safe. Whether

you are in the store or online, paying with Scrip en-

sures that no credit card or per-

sonal information is compro-

mised.

To get your SCRIP at the East

Campus, see Dick Langlois at

the SCRIP table before the 9:00

service or at coffee hour. At the West Campus, see

June Klingbeil. You can also pick up an order form

and call Karin at 672-0635 or email her at: cin-

[email protected] to place an order.

Shop Scrip & Amazon Smile

SCRIP GIFT CARDS are available at both campuses weekly. See Dick Langlois

in the narthex at the East Campus and June Klingbeil at the West Campus.

AMAZON SMILE for all your on line purchases! Just click on Living Faith Racine

when they ask you what charitable organization you would like to donate to.

Thanks and happy shopping!

If another 10 people buy just

ONE $25 gas card each month,

the monthly Scrip donation

coming to Living Faith would

increase by $120.

That’s another $1,440 a year to support our

ministries! Get your SCRIP today!

TerraCycle Update

Reminder: GoGo squeeZTM Program

It’s been in the local news and it’s been talked about in recent forums:

Our local Kestrel Hawk Landfill will be closed within the next 4 – 5 years unless all

of us step up to extend its life. The only way to extend that life is to put less in it.

Let’s use TerraCycle to keep some of those hard to recycle items out of the landfill

& earn a little cash for our ministries at the same time.

One of those hard to recycle items, snack pouches, are a popular, easy and usually

healthy option for kids and adults. But, every day, more and more healthy snack

pouches needlessly end up in landfills as the price of convenience. GoGo squeeZTM as an eco-friendly

snack food producer has partnered with eco-innovator TerraCycle® to provide a second life for them. To-

gether we can convert these would-be waste materials into fun and unique products!

Turning in your collections is easy. A TerraCycle® collection box is conveniently located inside the south

entrance.

GoGo squeeZTM Program accepted waste: ANY brand healthy snack plastic pouches & caps

Friendly Reminder: The Cereal Bag Program has ended. Sadly, any bags brought in now have to be

thrown away. Please dispose of them at home.

Keep ‘em Coming When You Find ‘em!

Thank you to everyone who has been collecting and bringing in the Box Tops for Education symbols.

Please keep bringing them in when you find them on packaging. Eventually,

the Box Tops program will become digital-only.

“No More Clipping” means just what it says; we can’t turn in that symbol for credit.

When you see that symbol, you have 2 choices:

1. Follow the directions for choosing Knapp School to receive the credit at BTFE.com & download the Box Tops app to your smart phone, or

2. 2. Bring your receipt to church just like you used to bring the Box Tops symbols and Karin Langlois will make sure Knapp gets the credit for you.

As an added plus, during the transition, Box Tops for Education will award credit for both ways of collect-ing. Questions? Contact Karin Langlois: 262-672-0635.

Making a List, Checking it Twice

We’ve already got a list, but have found it’s really out of date! We’d like to make sure our Prayer Chain

list is accurate and up to date, so we can enrobe our members with prayers when needed.

If you’d like to be a part of the Prayer Chain Ministry, sign up on the long yellow sheet or contact Barb

Elmer at 884-4355.

Renew and Refresh

As part of the whole “Renew and Refresh” emphasis, we’ve been taking time to lift

up and recognize many of the wonderful ministries and work of Living Faith, and

there are SO MANY!! We’ve been doing this at worship, and through our printed

resources. I would like to lift up at this point another group of ministries in this sec-

tion of the Journey Newsletter.

I would like to recognize, and offer a sincere Thank You to all the music ministries

and gifts of Living Faith! To all who participate; choir-members and band-members, singers and musi-

cians, the ones there every Sunday, the ones we hear from occasionally, percussionists and trumpeters,

vocalists and keyboardists… to all who share their gift of music with the rest of us… Thank you! We could-

n’t do any of this without you!

Thank You!

Christmas at the Country Club

Saturday, December 14th was the date of a beautiful Christmas

luncheon, held at the Racine Country Club. Carolyn Gibson

served as Co-Chairman and Master of Ceremonies. Guests en-

joyed a Christmas concert by the Case High Master Singers. Fol-

lowing the luncheon, there was a special reading of “A Cup of

Christmas Tea” by Marilyn Thygeson. All 55 guests loved this

most exquisite way to bring in the season, and left feeling a true

“Spirit of Christmas”.
