FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH NOVEMBER 13, 2013 WINCHESTER, VA.
VOL. 74 NO. 16
A Loving & Caring Church Transforming God’s Vision Into Action
Christian giving, if it is to be authentically Christian, must have
proper meaning and motivation.
Our financial giving is more than helping the church to pay the
bills. It’s more than maintaining a church staff. It’s also more
than providing an attractive, comfortable building. Financial stewardship enables the church to
carry out its mission in the world.
Our proposed Budget for 2014 was formally discussed this past week. When we look at the Budget,
it’s easy to see just a bunch of numbers that add up to a very large number. What we need to see
is how our Budget stresses the relationship between mission and ministry. Our mission as Christians
must always be kept in view. Our church’s mission statement reads: “A loving and caring church
transforming God’s vision into action” - relating to people in such a way that God’s purposes are
carried out through us. It is God’s vision, His desire, that all people have a relationship with Him,
and that human needs would be met. Everything we do as a church is to contribute toward that
mission.
We accomplish this mission through our ministries. We design and fund those ministries that will
allow us to carry out our mission. Our mission is the God-given reason that our church exists. Our
ministries are the ways we have decided that our mission can best be accomplished. This gives
meaning and purpose to our stewardship.
Motivation in giving speaks to our spirit and attitude and enthusiasm. One day Jesus was watching
as people gave their offerings in the Temple. He saw the wealthy and the poor bringing their gifts.
Suddenly Jesus became excited. A woman dropped in two coins, the value of which was so little
that it would not have made the financial report. But Jesus was excited because this widow gave
all she had. She gave sacrificially. That kind of giving involves trust. Have we reached the place
where we trust God in the financial area of our lives?
I’ve heard it said that we need to give until it hurts. The widow gave until both she and Jesus felt
good. The thrill of giving is a far greater blessing than any material reward we may receive, espe-
cially the thrill that we have pleased God and tangibly displayed our trust in Him.
Prayerfully consider the meaning and the motivation of your giving, as you make your financial com-
mitments to Christ and His church for 2014.

Hunting Ridge Retreat Fall Guidelines
Wood Cutting Rules
Church members needing firewood can call HRR Director Brian Bayliss 662-9004, to request location and permission to cut wood. Please leave the ash trees at the Ridge in order to control the Asian Long-
Horned Beetles or White-Spotted Sawyer Bugs at a central location.
The policy is to cut one load for the retreat for every two loads cut for yourself. Leave the HRR load at the wood pile in front of the tractor shed, unless otherwise directed by Brian. Any questions can be
addressed to Jim Christiansen 667-3873. Please take care when cut-
ting wood at the Ridge.
Hunting at the Ridge
Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in the local deer population is being monitored by the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (DGIF) with the help of local hunters and the published programs listed in the newspapers and online. Check out www.cwd-info.org for addi-
tional information. Pick up a CWD handout at the Ridge before you hunt, at the store, or go online to www.dgif.virginia.gov. After obtaining the rules, permission and time to hunt at the Ridge, you may encounter or harvest a CWD deer. Do not be alarmed, but do not attempt to contact, disturb, or re-move the animal. You should contact the Verona DGIF office (540) 248-9360, as well as, notify Director
Brian Bayliss. Enjoy the outdoors, we will overcome this setback in time.
FBC Telephone Directory
Need an electronic copy of the church telephone directory for your computer desktop? Emai l the church at [email protected] and we’ll be happy to email you the current version.
Miss Something? Missing church no longer means missing out on the Worship Service. The services
are now being recorded in .mp3 format which means they can be loaded to the website and available for listening at your convenience from your PC or smart phone. Simply click on the link, adjust your volume, and you are good to go!
Youth Library In an effort to provide our youth (ages 11-18) with Christian-themed books, movies, and music, we are developing a library in the 301 House. If you have items you would like to donate, please leave them in the church office. Of course, monetary donations are welcome as well. Thank you so much for helping to foster the Christian growth and development of our
young people. Contact Kristin Whitesides in the church office or Kathryn Mayberry for more in-
formation or if you have questions.

8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to
them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring
you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the
Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” — Luke 2: 8-12 (NIV)

Compassion in Action From Early Years
Feelings of compassion can lead your youngster to do nice things for relatives, neighbors, and friends.
Consider these ideas for helping your child think about how other people feel and what they need-and en-
courage him to take action.
Talk about it Help your youngster understand the motivation behind kind behavior. First, have him tell you one nice
thing someone did for him today. Then, ask why he thinks the person decided to do that. Perhaps his big
sister made a paper airplane for him. He might say, “She wanted me to be happy” or “She knows I like to
fly them, and she makes good ones.”
Work together Let your child see you being compassionate, and have him participate. For example, if you make a casse-
role for neighbors with a new baby, he could stir the ingredients. While you work, discuss the neighbors’
feelings and explain why you’re helping “They probably feel tired from taking care of the baby. They’ll
be glad they don’t have to cook tonight!”
Look for opportunities Inspire your youngsters to feel compassion and act on it. Say a friend falls and scrapes a knee at the play-
ground. You might ask your child how he would feel in that situation and what he would need. Then,
suggest that he treat the person the way he’d want to be treated. For instance, he could get an adult to
help and keep his friend company. Do to others as you would have them do to you.

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-not by works, so that no one can boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9
Thank you, Lord
Thank you, Lord, for saving my soul,
Thank you, Lord, for making me whole;
Thank you, Lord, for giving to me
Thy great salvation so rich and free. For several years now our church has sung this chorus as our
Doxology during the month of November. While we should thank
God each and every day for the gifts in our lives, we are especially reminded at this
time of year to give our thanks. This chorus, written in 1940 by Seth and Bessie
Sykes, who were traveling evangelists, is simple but profound in its message. Our
salvation was GIVEN to us by the Lord. We could never earn it anyway. A personal
relationship with the Lord is an incredible gift! Let us sincerely give God our thanks
and praise and carry this musical prayer with us everywhere we go!

This is a fresh new way of telling the Christmas Story. There are many different

ican melodies and even Cajun rhythm! May God bless us with a fresh understanding of Christ’s birth
into the world. Come and join us for this special celebration!

them for fellowship.
The primary focus of this year’s Thursday morning Ad-vent Study will be on the small book, The Case for Christ-mas, by Lee Strobel. Consulting experts on the Bible, ar-chaeology, and messianic prophecy, Strobel searches the true identity of the child born in the manger. If Jesus really was the Son of God in the flesh, then there ought to be credible eyewitness and scientific evidence that Jesus ful-filled the attributes of God and the Messiah. We will also take a closer look at the famous editorial,
“Yes, Virginia, There Is a Santa Claus,” written by a newspaper religion editor. The answer has more to do with the larger question of faith than most of us have thought about. The four sessions will be held in the lower auditorium on the following Thursdays from 10:00 to 11:30: November 21, and December 5, 12, and 19. Materials for the study will cost $5.00, payable the first session if possible. Bob Stainback and Lori Pendleton will lead the study. Please call the church office (662-5367) by Monday, November 18, to register.
Advent Coming Up
On the four Sundays in Advent prior to Christmas Day (December 1, 8, 15,
and 22), we will be lighting the candles on the Advent Wreath in both Worship
Services. If you and/or your family would like to participate by reading
Scripture and lighting the candle on a Sunday during Advent, contact the
Pastor or the Church Office (662-5367).
L.I.N.K. DINNER GROUPS
