Then the kingdom of heaven will be liketen virgins who took their lamps and wentout to meet the bridegroom. Five of themwere foolish and five were wise. Thefoolish ones, when taking their lamps, brought no oil with them, but the wisebrought flasks of oil with their lamps.Since the bridegroom was long delayed, they all became drowsy and fell asleep. Atmidnight, there was a cry, 'Behold, thebridegroom! Come out to meet him!' Thenall those virgins got up and trimmed theirlamps. The foolish ones said to the wise,'Give us some of your oil, for our lampsare going out.' But the wise ones replied,'No, for there may not be enough for usand you. Go instead to the merchants andbuy some for yourselves.' While they wentoff to buy it, the bridegroom came andthose who were ready went into thewedding feast with him. Then the doorwas locked. Afterwards the other virginscame and said, 'Lord, Lord, open thedoor for us!' But he said in reply, 'Amen, Isay to you, I do not know you.' Therefore, stay awake, for you know neither the daynor the hour. This is the truth. Peace be with you.

A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Philippians. (2: 12-18)Your blessings Father

Brothers and sisters,

So then, my beloved, obedient as you have always been, not only when I am present but allthe more now when I am absent, work out your salvation with fear and trembling. For Godis the one who, for his good purpose, works in you both to desire and to work. Doeverything without grumbling or questioning, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, amongwhom you shine like lights in the world, as you hold on to the word of life, so that my boastfor the day of Christ may be that I did not run in vain or labor in vain. But, even if I ampoured out as a libation upon the sacrificial service of your faith, I rejoice and share my joywith all of you. In the same way you also should rejoice and share your joy with me.

Praise be to God always.

A Big Heart Open to God September 30, 2013 , Antonio Spadaro, S.J. The exclusive interview with Pope Francis

Women in the Life of the ChurchAnd what about the role of women in the church? The pope has made reference to this issue onseveral occasions. In an interview he had affirmed that the feminine presence in the church hasnot been able to sufficiently emerge: the temptation of male chauvinism has not left room togive visibility to the role that women deserve in the community. He took up this question againduring his return trip from Rio de Jainero, asserting that a profound theology of women has notyet been elaborated. So, I ask: “What should be the role of women in the church? What can bedone to make their role more visible today?”

He answers: “It is necessary to broaden the opportunities for a stronger presence of women inthe church. I am wary of a solution that can be reduced to a kind of ‘female machismo,’because a woman has a different make-up than a man. But what I hear about the role of womenis often inspired by an ideology of machismo. Women are asking deep questions that must beaddressed. The church cannot be herself without the woman and her role. The woman isessential for the church. Mary, a woman, is more important than the bishops. I say this becausewe must not confuse the function with the dignity. We must therefore investigate further the roleof women in the church. We have to work harder to develop a profound theology of the woman.Only by making this step will it be possible to better reflect on their function within the church. The feminine genius is needed wherever we make important decisions. The challenge today isthis: to think about the specific place of women also in those places where the authority of thechurch is exercised for various areas of the church.”

THANKSGIVING in CANADA In Canada, the first Thanksgiving was celebrated by the Indians in an autumn celebration. Itsorigin in Canada dates back to the offering of thanks given by early explorers and settlers. In the early 1500’s, Champlain visited the longhouse of the Huron Indians, along the Trent WaterSystem of south-central Ontario. While he was there, he saw ceremonies being held inside thesmoke-filled longhouses. The Indians were giving thanks for the bountiful harvest of food.Champlain could see that the village people were content and very thankful. They prayed thatthis abundance of food would stay with them.During their first Thanksgiving, both the Indians and Pilgrims gave thanks for a bountiful harvest. They prepared a feast of the foods that they grew and could hunt and gather at that time.Thanksgiving truly was a time to give thanks.

Thanksgiving Day Prayer Heavenly Father, on Thanksgiving Day We bow our hearts to You and pray. We give You thanks for all You've done Especially for the gift of Jesus, Your Son. For beauty in nature, Your glory we see For joy and health, friends and family, For daily provision, Your mercy and care These are the blessings You graciously share. So today we offer this response of praise With a promise to follow You all of our days.
