A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park is the story of two children growing up in Sudan.

Nya is a girl from the Nuer tribe. She spends 8 hours a day, 7 months of the year walking to collect water for her family.

When he is 11, Salva’s village is attacked by the Sudanese army who wants to destroy the people of southern Sudan. He spends the next 11 years walking across several countries and living in different refugee camps trying to stay safe.

Salva’s story is based on the real life story of Salva Dut. Nya’s story is not based on a specific person, but could be the story of many of the girls and women in southern Sudan.
