Again, our combined children’s choir will sing the “Turkey song” and we will respond: “Hurray, hurray, hurray” as we give thanks for all our blessings. But, by Chanukah we quite often forget our blessings ( ברכות) Your officers and board are working very hard to bring programming we can be proud of that will enlighten and entertain us as well as help us raise money to fi- nancially sustain us on our journey. Let’s greet and make visitors (and our own mem-

events.

Invite people you don’t know to sit with you and

get to know the people that come to our Temple.

already know is not the way to meet and get to

know our fellow congregants and guests.

The President’s Communication Corner ……………… October has been a great month! So much happened! First there was our potluck dinner followed

by a Simchat Torah service and the consecration of our newest religious school students. Welcome, Zach-

ary Birch Farragut, Aaron Birch Farragut, and Briana Zeff. And speaking of religious school students,

mazel tov to Ayden Adar on becoming a bar mitzvah and Marisa Roth on becoming a bat mitzvah. From

consecration to b’nai mitzvah, we are so proud of our students!

Another group I want to recognize is our new members who we officially welcomed with a special

Shabbat in their honor. We look forward to their participation as members of our TBEI family.

What tests our knowledge while providing a ton of fun? The answer: Trivia. A great time was had

by all who attended our Trivia Night last month. Moving on to this month, please join us at the Peter Yar-

row concert November 10. Not only will it be a fun and musical evening, but part of the proceeds will be

donated to Operation Respect, an organization that works to help create bully-free environments for children

and youth.

In addition to having fun, we have many opportunities to learn: the Adult Education series, Torah

Study on Saturday mornings, adult B’nai Mitzvah class, and Brotherhood and Sisterhood speakers to name

just a few. Decisions, decisions, decisions.

Speaking of decisions, this month is our semi-annual Congregation meeting when we decide who

will be our congregation’s representatives on the Nominating Committee. The meeting is scheduled for

Sunday, November 18 at 2:00 p.m., and a quorum is necessary to conduct business.

Be sure to check out the many upcoming events listed in the Shofar each month. The temple offers

something for everyone. Find your “something” and I’ll see you there….

Ritual Committee Report ~ ~

We have members from all branches of Judaism at TBEI and with this in mind, at the Ritual Com-

mittee meeting on October 24th we arrived at the following suggestions after a long discussion

about suitable attire at services. It is our hope to teach our children, by example, to distinguish a

social event from a religious service. The committee decided to re-establish appropriate attire for

accepting honors or aliyot on the bema. For example:

Blouses or dresses covering the shoulders

Shirts with collars on men

Tallit optional for an Aliyah

Shorts should not be worn at religious services

It is the committee’s desire to teach our children and families respect and appreciation for the ho-

liness of the sanctuary.

To request an honor or an Aliyah during a Shabbat service contact the Temple office.

Our Monthly TBEI Library Book Review……………….by Sheilah Korinow

Today, at the push of a button, technology can provide us information about almost everything.

But sometimes it's overkill - we are asked to google through many pages listed on our computer

just to search for one small bit of information. That's why it's oftentimes more convenient to look

at a book (in our library, of course), that can provide you a lot of information in an organized manner. You have

immediate knowledge of what's in the book, in what manner it is presented, and usually a helpful forward and/or

introduction to give you the purpose of the book and any significant ideas related to it.

The book I am reviewing is Great Moments In Jewish History, co-authored by Robert Slater and his wife, Eli-

nor. Our library also has some of their other books. This book stated: "the Slaters bring to life events that have

shaped the character and essence of the Jewish people and determined the course of their dramatic history." The

book is divided into four distinct sections; Moments of Courage, Moments of Joy, Moments of Despair, and Mo-

ments of Creativity." Each event is approximately three pages in length, yet contains many interesting and infor-

mative bits of information you may not know. Also, each article begins with an overview of the event, reminding

you of any essential facts of what may be helpful before you read.

I will list each section of the book, underline it, and will then provide you with a few of the names of the arti-

cles under each of the sections so you can have an idea of what the book contains and how varied the articles

seem to be. Articles appear from biblical until modern times.

Under Moments of Courage

Moses Leads Children of Israel Out of Egypt - 13th century B.C.E.

Israelites Receive the Ten Commandments - 1230 B.C.E.

Knesset Stormed Over Reparations Issue - 1952

Israelis Capture Adolf Eichmann - 1960

Brother Daniel Denied Israeli Citizenship -1962

Under Moments of Joy

Abraham Passes Test of Faith - 18th century B.C.E.

Cyrus Permits Jews to Return to Zion - 538 B.C.E.

Rebecca Gratz Introduces First Sunday School - 1838

Reform Temple Founded in New York - 1845

Ben-Yehuda Revives Hebrew Language -1897

United Nations Votes to Establish Jewish State - 1947

First Woman Rabbi Ordained - 1972

Catholic Church Reconciles with Jews - 1994

Great Moments In Jewish History includes so much more than the above articles. Look at its Table of Contents

and you will be pleasantly surprised by all it holds. It is a treasure-chest for many, many events By reading it,

you'll read things you already know, much more that you don't know, but in addition to that, in one way or an-

other, you will understand how and why these events have had an important influence on our history - political,

historical, cultural, and more. To check out this book, take the slip of paper from between its pages, located on

top of the file cabinet on the right side of the library, fill it out and place it in the small wooden box, also on top of

the cabinet. When you return the book, just leave it where you found it. Enjoy! There is much to be gained from

reading this book, or even parts of it.
