Lodge # 2442 newsletter
A Letter from Lodge President Joan Tasoglu
Sisters and Brothers, As you can see by the location of my letter, July has brought about a change in the venue of
our Sgt. John Basilone Lodge 2442 newsletter. On July 8th, I received an e-mail from Brother Cliff Miller stating that he was stepping down as editor of the newsletter for a variety of reasons and that he felt he could devote his time elsewhere. My e-mail to him thanked him for all the time and devotion he has given us the past 6 years in doing the newsletter and bringing it to our members. As it is complex and runs approximately $200 a year to run website and pay dues for our webmaster and his wife, I have decided to use the NYS OSIA web connection. There is a lifetime fee of $100, and we have access to our own webpage. Angela Donato has offered to be editor and has been working closely with powers to be from the state to get it up and running quickly. This is your newsletter for August. As for the rest of July, we have indeed been productive as a lodge. On July 12, we went to see a presentation and a tour of the facilities of the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind in Smithtown. We saw how dogs are trained to assist the blind and disabled and got to meet the America's Vet Dog Service Manager along with 2 Vet Dogs in training. At that time we presented him with a check for $500.00 to help with the training of a dog to be given to a returning veteran. Thank you to Sister Janis M for arranging this tour for 20 of our lodge members, It was a great day. We have wonderful pictures from Brother Vito. On July 19th, we had our summer Applebee's flapjack fundraiser. We served approximately 60 people with 15 lodge members working in some capacity or another. We raffled off 5 beautiful baskets and had a great 50/50. Thanks to Sister Stephanie S for setting up and chairing this event, and kudos to everyone that worked and attended this fun morning. Thanks again to Brother Vito for great pictures, to appear in our next newsletter. Sunday, July 27th I will represent our lodge at the District 1 Queen Pageant Dinner Dance to be held at the Brumidi lodge in Deer Park from 3pm to 7pm. We do not have a Queen from our lodge this year, hopefully we will have one next year. Please remember we are still collecting food for the pantry as well as box tops. We have also initiated for August and September to collect supplies for schools and for our USA service people. In this sweeping immigrants tale from direction Emanuele Crialese, Sicilian widower Salvatore Mancuso (Vincenzo Amato) leaves behind everything he knows to pursue a better life in America at the dawn of the 20th Century. With his sons in tow, Mancuso survives the harrowing Atlantic crossing only to suffer more hardship and humiliation
on Ellis Island. But along the way, he finds romance with a mysterious Englishwoman (Charlotte Gainsbourg)

On Monday night, July 14, 2014, Museum Commissioner Madeline Matteucci attended her first museum meeting on Staten Island. Sister Madeline is the first female member of our lodge to be elected to a State office. The museum's National Overseer Chairman and State Past President Carlo Matteucci was also present. There are 6 museum commissioners and they make the decisions for the museum. The national lodge owns the property and the New York Grand Lodge runs the day to day operations of the museum. The Garibaldi-Meucci Museum is named after Giuseppe Garibaldi, the main force who unified Italy, and Antonio Meucci, the true inventor of the telephone. Both of these 2 gentlemen lived and worked in this house that is now the Garibaldi-Meucci Museum. The MUSEUM will be having a major FUND RAISER on SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 1ST at THE STATEN on Station Island. The brunch is $70. The honorees are Keith Wilson, the former Museum Chairperson, and the outgoing Museum Commissioners. There will be a champagne reception at the museum following the brunch. A bus is being planned to leave from the Brumidi Lodge on the morning of the event. The cost of the bus is $20. More details will follow. Anyone interested in attending the brunch please contact sister Madeline Matteucci at the next lodge meeting.
How did we ever get along without espresso?
This delicious beverage got its start in a kitchen in Italy. Espresso first appeared in Italy in the early 20th century.
Coffee had already become a necessity to Italian daily life during the Renaissance. In 1903, Luigi Bezzera owned a manufacturing business and was frustrated by the
time-consuming process of brewing his own coffee at home each morning. He soon found that adding steam pressure to the machine not only cut down on the
brewing process but also produced a stronger, more robust cup of coffee. Bezzera immediately named his invention the “Fast Coffee Machine”.
Espresso’ means fast in Italian, the name we know the beverage by today. Unfortunately, Bezzera wasn’t as talented at marketing and sales as he was at engineering. In 1905, another businessman named Desidero Pavoni purchased
the machine’s rights from Bezzera and had it patented. Pavoni’s name was soon attached to all things having to do with espresso.
Bezzera may be responsible for giving the world the espresso machine, but Pavoni’s marketing is what changed the way we drink coffee.
Espresso Martini Recipe
Ingredients:
• 1 1/2 ounces vodka • 3/4 ounce Kahlua coffee
liqueur 1/4 ounce white crème de cacao
1 ounce cold espr1 ounce cold espr1 ounce cold espr1 ounce cold espressoessoessoesso Preparation:
Pour the ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice.
Shake well.
Espresso is essentially a strong black coffee that’s been brewed under intense pressure. Water is forced through very finely ground beans until a
concentrated coffee with delicate, chocolate colored foam on top
called cream is produced. It can then be sipped as is or mixed with
milk to create a Latte.
COSMIC ESPESSO Astronauts of all nationalities, but especially the Italians, have long
grumbled about the coffee served on the International Space Station high above earth..
Now the Space Station is getting a real Espresso Machine.
The Machine is designed especially for space. Its introduction
will coincide with the 6 month mission of
ITALY’ S FIRST FEMALE ASTRONAUT SAMANTHA CRISTOFORETTI , 37.
The Fighter Pilot & Italian Air Force Capt. will fly to the Space Station in November
aboard a Russian Capsule. FOR MORE ABOUT ITALIAN ASTRONAUTS
