CABLE TERMINOLOGY
Durometer – The number or letter that denotes the hardness of a material
Flexibility – The limpness of a cable, pliable, easy to bend
Flex-Life – The number of cycles a cable can survive in bending or twisting or both
Sunlight Resistance – Material that does not totally degrade after long exposure to ultraviolet rays
Mechanical & Physical Attributes
CABLE TERMINOLOGY
Flame Resistance – The ability of insulation or jacket material not to propagate flame once the heat source is removed
Tensile Strength – The pulling force necessary to break a material, measured in psi
Elongation – The amount of stretch (%) a material has before breaking
Weld Slag – A globule bead of molten metal from the flux during welding operations
Mechanical & Physical Attributes
CABLE TERMINOLOGY
Continuous Operating Temperature – The maximum temperature a cable sees during normal operation
o Typical values are
o80°C, 90°C, 105°C
o125°C, 150°C, 200°C & 250°C
Aesthetics – The look and feel of the cable/cable assembly
Abrasion Resistance – The ability of the cable surface to resist surface wear by friction of rubbing/grinding
Mechanical & Physical Attributes

o Attenuation
o Velocity of Propagation
o Dielectric Constant
o Crosstalk
o Impedance

o Inductance
Electrical Characteristics
INSULATIONS Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) - most common
Polyolefins - 80°C maximum temperature with very good electrical properties and low water absorption. Poor flame resistance can be overcome with jackets.
o Polyethylene (PE) o Polypropylene (PP) o Foamed PE
Cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) - o 125°C maximum temperature o Very good electrical properties
INSULATIONS
Thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) - o Broad category, but can have high temp ratings o Many different durometers (softness and
flexibility) o Some are highly oil resistant
Polypropylene (PP) and ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) blends (Santoprene™) -
o Food grades and medical grades available o Resistant to wash-down and many chemicals
Santoprene is a trademark of Advanced Elastomer Systems, LP.
INSULATIONS
Polyester elastomer (Hytrel®) -
o -70°C to 105°C
o Excellent cut and abrasion resistance
o Reliable with thin walls
o Poor dielectric
o Low friction (high flex-life cables)
o Less expensive than fluoropolymers
Hytrel is a registered trademark of DuPont.
INSULATIONS
Fluoropolymers - o Fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP)
o Ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) o Tefzel®, Fluon® and Neoflon™
o Perfluoroalkoxy (PFA) polymer
o Ethylene chloratrifluoroethylene (ECTFE) o Halar®
Tefzel is a registered trademark of DuPont, Fluon is a registered trademark of Asahi Glass Company, Neoflon is a trademark of Daikin Industries, Limited and Halar is a registered trademark of Solvay Polymers, Inc.
INSULATIONS
Fluoropolymers- o Cold temps -70°C or better o Tefzel® 150°C to 200°C, FEP 150°C to 200°C, PFA to
260°C o Excellent resistance to most chemicals o Frequently the choice for clean room environments o Fairly rigid material o Low friction (flex-life) o Abrasion resistant o Highly flame retardant o ETFE (Tefzel®) does not emit toxic fumes when ignited
(aerospace wire) o Low dielectric constants Tefzel is a registered trademark of DuPont.
