witnessed a 25-foot shrimp boat

capsize.

Captain Dale Parker was in the

current caused the top heavy

MISS RIVA to roll. The crew of

the SCOUT immediately notified the Coast Guard of the situation and Captain Parker called for engines and broke away

from their barge.

The SCOUT was underway by 1340. Within five minutes, the SCOUT was at the scene of the roll over. The shrimp

boat’s two-man crew stood on the keel of their now capsized vessel, waiting rescue. The two men were rescued unharmed

thanks to the quick action of the crew of HMG Tug SCOUT.

On May 4th, the crew aboard the

tug PACIFIC FALCON performed a

Man Overboard Drill in Long

Beach, CA.

This drill exercise was particularly

useful as it was conducted using a

real-life scenario, rather than a

table top exercise.

All crew members contributed to

the exercise and came away having

gained much from this experience.

They now have a more realistic

understanding of how to approach a

real-life man overboard situation.

National Safety Month

June is decreed the National Safety Month by the National Safety Council. The goal is to raise awareness about what it

takes to stay safe and reduce causes of injury at work, on the road and in communities and homes. The theme of this

year’s safety month is What I Live For. We encourage employees to think about the importance of their safety in rela-

tion to family, friends and their career. See below for greater detail on some ways to keep you and your loved ones safe!

Safety in the Home

One way to keep your home safe is to be aware of the danger of Carbon Monoxide (CO). CO is produced by burning

fuel and is colorless, odorless and tasteless, but very toxic. Common sources of CO are engines left running in enclosed

spaces, charcoal grills, fireplaces, and gas appliances. It is important to have fuel-burning appliances inspected yearly,

check vents regularly to make sure they are in good shape, never use a propane heater or gas/charcoal grill indoors, and

never use a gas oven to heat your home. Consider putting a carbon monoxide detector in your home near sleeping areas!

Safety at Work

Dr. Anita M. Rothblum, a US Coast Guard Researcher, has found that accidents are not usually caused by a single mis-

take but by a series of errors. Fatigue, inadequate communication and coordination between crew are some of the most

important factors to increasing risk. Communicating with team mates and crew members is vital to a safe work place.

Safety on the Road

Motor vehicle crashes are the #1 cause of unintentional death. Hands-free devices are NOT necessarily safer than using

a handheld phone (see the multi-tasking myth below)! Wear seatbelts, put your children in car seats, do not drink and

drive, talk on the phone or text. Watch out for little ones playing in driveways. Don’t underestimate the risk of fatigued

driving!

Safety Corner

Things Not As They Seem By Capt. Tony Burling, Harley Marine Gulf

Tugs that are working offshore are most often seen towing a barge at distances reaching 2,000 feet behind them. That’s al-

most a half a mile. From a distance, a tug and tow could easily be confused for two separate vessels.

Should your vessel venture between a tug and its tow, you would quickly and unhappily learn that a tow wire or hawser is

connecting the two units.

When in inland waters and moving a loaded barge, a tug is usually pushing the barge. Although you may only see a few feet

of freeboard on the barge, it could be drawing over 25 feet of water, making the barge difficult to maneuver and even more

difficult to stop. It is not unreasonable for a tug pushing a loaded barge to need half of a mile to come to an emergency stop.

A tug towing astern could need up to one mile to stop.

So we need to think on both sides of this box. Those of us who are captains are used to this, but someone in their pleasure

boat probably isn’t thinking this way. So we, as professional mariners, have to do this for them!

It’s the beginning of 2015 boating season. Let’s slow down and think a little bit about the people in the other boats and what

they’re doing.

STOP, THINK, LEARN AND SHARE!

Announcing the Think Stop Learn and Share program.

Think, Stop, Learn and Share

These are the new safety tenets for everyone at Harley Marine Services to use as a guide for all operations.

The Stop Work Authority (SWA) is an integral part of the Harley Marine Services’ Think Stop Learn and Share – For Safety

philosophy at Harley Marine Services. It is a philosophy that HMS is working to embed in the culture of all its employ-

ees. The Stop Work Authority program is the initial step into a behavior-based safety program.

The Stop Work Authority process involves a stop, notify, correct, resume and share approach for the resolution of a perceived

unsafe condition, act, error, omission or lack of understanding that could result in an undesirable event. All Harley Marine

Services and Subsidiary employees have the authority and obligation to stop any task or operation where concerns or ques-

tions regarding the control of health, safety or environmental risks exist.

The Think Stop Learn and Share logo itself is a visual reminder that is currently being placed on our vessels. These tenets

surround the Towing Diamond that is representative of Harley Marine Services logo which is indicative to all the companies

of Harley Marine Services, Inc.

National Cancer Survivors Day

National Cancer Survivors Day is an annual Celebration of Life held in communities around

the world the first Sunday every June. It is an opportunity for all people living with a history

of cancer and those who have been affected by cancer to connect with each other and recog-

nize ongoing challenges regarding cancer in the world today. This year, Harley Marine would

like to highlight ways to reduce the risk of getting cancer and honor those who have been af-

fected. While there is no absolute way of preventing cancer, there are practices that you can

take to decrease your risk!

Don’t Use Tobacco Products!

Eat Healthy

Skip the sugary drinks. Add a vegetable to your lunch routine. Typically a weight loss goal

should be no more than 5-10% of your body weight! It is important to have reasonable weight

loss goals and put a plan in place to consistently follow them!

Protect yourself from the sun!

Stay Active

Turn off the TV! The amount of time spent watching television is a leading behavioral predic-

tor of obesity. Keep a log of your exercise! If going to the gym isn’t your thing, find alterna-

tives! Fitbits are great tracking devises for goals related to walking. You can also park further

away from work and the grocery store to get in additional steps. Take weekend hikes and try

out canoeing or yoga!

Students In Alaska Receive HMS Scholarships By Chris Iszler, Pacific Coast Maritime

Pacific Coast Maritime is proud to support the Unalaska City

School graduating class of 2015!

This year we have selected a few outstanding students to receive

scholarships provided by Harley Marine Services.

We had 20 portfolios turned in this year out of 36 graduating stu-

dents. The students that applied this year were all outstanding

academically and very talented in all categories so the choice was

difficult.

Kiecel Tungul will receive a $500.00 scholarship along with

Kenny Ho, who claims he was the first kid in pre-school with a mustache. Kevin M. Schomer, who is pursuing a career in

engineering, will receive a $1000.00 scholarship. He plans on attending the University Of Anchorage and will be working a

summer job as a mechanic here in Dutch Harbor.

Harley Marine Services and Pacific Coast Maritime are very proud to be participating in our first scholarship program. The

leadership and knowledge that is passed along from the teachers to their students is clearly evident in their accomplishments.

Mentor Nominees

Please nominate your recommendation for best mentor

for the first half of 2015.

Send your nomination to [email protected]. Be

sure to include the reasons why he or she is a great men-

tor. We will take nominations until June 20th and an-

nounce the recognitions in the July Soundings.

The Mentoring program is gathering a lot of momentum

and the feedback has been that the current mentoring pro-

gram has been the best yet, because of its flexibility and

ability to have various types of mentoring, as well as easy

documentation.

There are a lot of benefits to mentoring and being men-

tored. If you don’t have a mentor, find one – you will be

glad you did!

401(k) Plan Open Enrollment

401(k) is our company-sponsored retirement plan. The plan consists of two compo-

nents: employee contributions through payroll deduction and a company match. Con-

tributions can be directed to a variety of investment options and may be made either

before tax, after tax (Roth option) or through a combination of the two. The plan docu-

ments provide all the plan details.

Whether retirement is far away or just a few years away, it is important to set goals for

yourself, put a plan in place and to start saving for retirement today. Saving on a regu-

lar basis with a well thought out investment plan will assist you in meeting the goals

you set for yourself as you build a nest egg for your retirement. Now is a good time to

consider increasing your deferral (contribution) amount or enrolling in the plan if you

are not currently participating.

Education

Kibble and Prentice, our plan advisors, can assist you and help you with your 401(k).

An investment advisor can answer your 401(k) questions and advise you on setting up

an investment plan. Please feel free to contact Kibble and Prentice at 888-GET-401K

(888-438-4015) enter *0 and ask for an investment advisor.

Quarterly Open Enrollment Period for July 2015

Human Resources recently mailed out packets to new employees, including all neces-

sary forms. For those currently participating and/or eligible employees, the 401(k) in-

formational packets can be located on the PAF system (Employee Forms tab), includ-

ing deferral and beneficiary forms. The packets include updated educational material

and information regarding investment options.

Please remember open enrollment is the only time you can change your deferral

amount. You may change your investment elections anytime online at

www.moranknobel.com. The deadline for returning forms to your local HR repre-

sentative is Friday, June 26, 2015. Due to administrative constraints, any forms turned

in after the deadline will not be processed and you will have to enroll during the next

open enrollment in October 2015. For additional information or questions on the 401

(k) plan, please contact your HR Representative anytime at 206-628-0051.
