A Goal for Caracas THE NEED • Insecurity is the main concern of Venezuelans. According to figures from

the Venezuelan Observatory of Violence (2011) in Caracas 3,488 people were killed in 2011, increasing the rate of homicides in the 71 to 108 per 100,000 inhabitants in the metropolitan area.

• According to data from the Yearbooks of Mortality of People's Power Ministry for Health, homicide is the leading cause of death for men between 15 and 24. Between January and June 2011, more than 30 children and teenagers were murdered in Caracas (CSOM, 2012). According to the Ministry of Interior and Justice, in 90% of crimes committed in the country there is a teenager involved.

• With over 2 million inhabitants and about 35% of all homicides in 2011, Petare is the largest and most popular sector with a focus of violence and crime in Venezuela.

• One of the main factors that impacts violence is the educational exclusion

of the younger segments of the population. Other causes are overcrowding, idleness and lack of tolerance in the communities. In this sense, the creation of opportunities for interaction and social participation, and free spaces for recreation are key factors in reducing violence.

• Aware of this, PPLA and PCT aim to provide opportunities for the development of children and youth of this community through the promotion of sports as an alternative to violence. To do this, we have identified the organization responsible for serving the community of Petare in physical development and athletic training.

Page 6: A Goal for Caracas

A Goal for Caracas The Friends Foundation of Deportivo Petares main objectives are: to run the project

and serve Petare Social Project and Deportivo Petare FC - one of the first division soccer teams from Venezuela - as a hotbed for the creation of his quarry. The social

Project is an initiative that seeks to promote social and human development, through the mass of soccer in popular areas of the municipality.

The project is focused on combating violence, crime, and drugs, promoting social

integration and improving the education of children and youth.

One of the activities of this project is to organize a vacation camp to be held for the second year from July 30th August 26th 2012 and will benefit 200 children ages 7

through 12 living in the community. The camp is the field headquarters of Palo Verde and Sports of The Dolorita (Petare), and with the assistance of 1 coach for every 10

campers.

Currently the Friends of Deportivo Petare do not have sufficient resources to carry out their vacation camp. Additionally, the programming of the camp is centered on the

physical development of campers so it does not provide training in civic values.

Both Project Peace Latin America and Peace With Everything hope that A Goal For Caracas is both a celebration of the International Day of Peace as well as a contribution to the reduction of violence in the area during the day of the event. This will be an opportunity for the community to meet and share through the second most popular sport in the country. The ultimate goal of A Goal For Caracas is to provide children and young adults in Petare not only an opportunity to play soccer in a healthy environment but also provide sports training experience that allows them to develop their potential in this discipline. The intention is to use this specific activity in Petare as the start of a program of human development that impacts the community and fosters peace and social inclusion in a sector with high rates of poverty and violence.

A Goal for Caracas ¿Why support A Goal For Caracas? • Sports teach core values such as cooperation and respect, and is an effective way to reach

children and adolescents who are excluded and discriminated by offering companionship, support and a sense of belonging.

• Currently many organizations inside and outside of Venezuela successfully promote sports as a formula for peace and human development. This project aims to bring this formula to one of the most violent communities in the country.

• A Goal for Caracas aims to consolidate itself as a platform to address education quality and inclusive sport for young people in Petare. Additionally, this project aspires to be a resource to generate national awareness about the need for local cooperation in strengthening sports for peace and development.

• Keeping in mind this is a traditionally male dominated field, A Goal For Caracas aims to serve as a vehicle for gender equality through progressive inclusion of a greater number of girls in sports training available to community members.

Human development is of great importance to reduce violence in a population. However, other factors such as political stability and distribution of resources can influence the stability of the area in a given time. These factors will be taken into consideration in the evaluation of the project. In September 2012 Project Peace Latin America and Peace With Everything will present their alliances, media and sponsors in a general report of results. Additionally, PPLA and PCT will conduct a set of focus groups with key stakeholders to monitor and evaluate the Vacation Camp, and an estimate of the potential expansion of the project during the school year.
