Cedar Rapids, IA – The Lowe’s  Charitable  and  Educational  Foundation  has  awarded  a  $3580 Lowe’s  Toolbox for Education® grant to Jackson Elementary in Cedar Rapids for creation and addition of an outdoor learning garden. Jackson Elementary is one of 545 schools across the United States to be awarded a Lowe’s  Toolbox  for Education grant this spring for improvement projects. The outdoor learning garden will give students a hands on approach to learning about nutrition and growing food. The Jackson Garden Committee is currently working with the kindergarten and first grade classrooms to align classroom curriculum with the garden schedule. The grant project will include a fence, benches, paths, tools, greenhouse, and cold frames to support the existing garden which was created in the fall of 2014. The project is scheduled to be completed in fall 2015. “The Lowe’s Toolbox for Education program delivers on Lowe’s commitment to improve the educational environment for students across the country,” said Maureen Ausura, chairwoman of the Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation. “We're honored to work with Jackson Elementary to support the needs of our local students, teachers and families.” Since  its  inception  in  2006,  Lowe’s  Toolbox for Education has provided nearly $45 million in grants to more than 10,000 schools, benefiting more than 6 million schoolchildren. Grants are available to K-12 public schools in the United States for a wide range of improvement projects. Schools may be eligible to receive Toolbox grants up to $100,000. Parent groups and educators can apply by visiting ToolboxForEducation.com. The fall cycle will open Aug. 3, 2015. To view a full list of projects by state, visit ToolboxForEducation.com/winners. Turn Summer Healthier (forward this email to parents)

A recent survey shows kids are less active, have inconsistent sleep patterns andovereat during the "lazy" days of summer....all of which cause weight gain. And thisweight gain contributes to health risks. National experts encourage parents to:

Shop for and cook healthy meals togetherTake long family walks after dinner.Look for free or low-cost programs that can provide daily routines for children.Start with the Y, local parks and recreation departments and ask around to see iffriends or neighbors need help walking or caring for animals.Give kids chores or responsibilities around the house. Encourage kids to plan neighborhood activities such as kickball, hide-and-go-

seek, etc.Help kids start a garden, inside or out. It's educational, teaches responsibility, and kids love to eat what they grow.Limit sweets! Keep them out of the house or make rules around consumption.

The week before school resumes, get kids back on the school clock so they aren't strugglingwith the adjustment and to assist teachers in a smoother jumpstart to the school year.
