DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

Store materials to permit easy access for inspection and identification. Keep steel members off gronndand spaced by using pallets, du•mage, or other supports and spacers. Protect steel members nnd packagedmaterials fi'om corrosion and deterioration.

Do not store materials on stn•cture in a manner that might cause distortion, damage, or overload tomembers or supporting structures. Repair or replace damaged materials or structures as directed.

B. Store fasteners in a protected place in sealed containers with manufacturer's labels intact.

Fasteners may be repackaged provided Owner's testing and inspecting agency observesrepackaging and seals containers.

Clean and relobricate bolts and nuts that become dry or rusty before use.Comply witli manufactorers' written reco•muendations for cleaning and lubricating ASTM F 1852fasteners and for retesting fasteners after lobrication.

High-Strength Bolts: Shop install high-strength bolts according to RCSC's "Specification for StrncturalJoints Using ASTM A 325 or A 490 Bolts" for type ofbolt and type ofjoint specified.

I. Joint Type: Snug tightened.

Weld Connections: Comply with AWS DI.1/DI.IM and AWS DI.8/D1.8M for tolerances, appearances,welding procedore specifications, weld qoality, and methods osed in correcting welding work.

Assemble and weld built-up sections by methods that will maintain true alignment of axes without

exceeding tolerances in AISC 303 for mill material.

SHOP PRIMING

Shop prime steel surfaces except the following:

I. Surfaces embedded in concrete or mortar. Extend priming of partially embedded members to adepth of2 inches.

2. Surfaces to be field welded.

3. Galvanized surfaces.

Surface Preparation: Clean surfaces to be painted. Remove loose rust and mill scale and spatter, slag, orflux deposits. Prepare surfaces according to the following specifications and standards:

SSPC-SP 2, "Hand Tool Cleaning."

SSPC-SP 3, "Po•ver Tool Cleaning."

Priming: hmnediately after surface preparation, apply primer according to manufacturer's writteninstructions and at rate recommended by SSPC to provide a minimum dry fihn tblckness of 1.5 mils. Usepriming methods that result in full coverage ofjoints, corners, edges, and exposed surfaces.

Stripe paint corners, crevices, bolts, welds, and sharp edges.Apply two coals of shop paint to surfaces that are inaccessible after assembly or erection. Changecolor of second coat to distinguish it fi'om fin'st.

Painting: Prepare steel and apply a oue-coal, nonasphaltic primer complying with SSPC-PS Guide 7.00,"Painting System Guide 7.00: Guide for Selecting One-Coat Shop Painting Systems," to provide a dryfihn thlckuess ofnot less than 1.5 mils.

GALVANIZING

Hot-Dip Galvanized Finish: Apply zinc coating by the hot-dip process to structural steel according toASTM A 123/A 123M.

Fill vent and drain holes that will be exposed in the finished Work unless they will function as

weep holes, by plugging with zinc solder and filing off smooth.Galvanize lintels attached to structural-steel fi'ame and located in exterior walls.

SOURCE QUALITY CONTROL

Testing Agency: Owner •vill engage an independent testing and inspecting agency to perform shop testsaud inspections and prepare test reports.

Provide testing agency with access to places where slructural-steel work is being fabricated orprodoced to perform tests and inspections.

Correct deficiencies in Work that test reports and inspections indicate does not comply with the ContractDoculneuts.

Bolted Connections: Shop-bolted connectious will be visually inspected.

Welded Connections: Fillet welds shall be visually inspected. In addition to visoal inspection, fidlpenetratiou groove welds shop-welded connections •vill be tested and inspected according toAWS D1. I/D 1.1M and the following inspection procedures, at testing agency's option:1. Ultrasonic Inspection: ASTM E 164.

2. Radiographic Inspection: ASTM E 94.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1

A.

EXAMINATION

Verify, with steel Erector present, elevations of coucrete- and masonry-bearing surfaces and locations ofanchor rods, bearing plates, and olher embedments for compliance witll requirements.

Prepare a certified survey of beariug surfaces, anchor rods, bearing plates, and other embedmentsshowing dhnensions, locations, angles, and elevations.

B. Preceed with installation only al•er unsatisfactory couditions have been corrected.

3.2

A.

PREPARATION

Provide temporary shores, guys, braces, and other supports duriug erection to keep stn•ctural steel secure,plumb, and in alignment against temporary coustraction loads and loads equal in intensib, to design loads.Remove temporary sapports when permanent structoral steel, connections, aod bracing are in place unlessotherwise indicated.

Do not remove temporary shoring supporting composite deck construction until cast-in-placeconcrete has attained its design compressive s•rength.

3.3 ERECTION

Set sia'uctural steel accurately iu locations and to elevations indicated and according to AISC 303 aodA1SC 360.

Base Plates: Clean concrete- and masonry-bearing surfaces of bond-reducing materials, and roughensurfaces prior to setting plates. Clean bottom surface ofplates.

Set plates for structural members on wedges, shims, or setting nuts as required.Weld plate washers to top of baseplate.

Snug-tighten anchor rods after supported members have been positioned and plumbed. Do not

remove wedges or shims but, if protruding, eat off flush with edge of plate before packing withgroat.

Promptly pack grout solidly between bearing surfaces and plates so no voids remain. Neatlyfinish exposed surfaces; protect grout and allow to cure. Comply with manufacturer's writteninstallatiou instmctious for shrinkage-reslstant grouts.

Maintain erection tolerances of structural steel within AISC's "Code of Standard Practice for Steel

Buildings and Bridges."

Align and adjust various members that form part of complete frame or stractare before permanently

fastening. Before assembly, clean bearing surfaces and other surfaces that will be in permauent contactwith members. Perform necessary adjustments to compensate for discrepancies in elevations andaligmnent.

Level and phnnb individual members ofstructure.

Make allowances for difference between temperature at time of erection and mean temperaturewhen structure is completed and in service.

Splice members only where indicated.

Do not use thermal cutting during erection unless approved by Engineer. Finish thermally cutseetinns within smoothness limits in AWS DI.I/DI.IM.

Do not enlarge unfair holes in members by burning or using drift pins. Ream holes that must be e•dargedto admit bolts.

Shear Connectors: Prepare steel sarfaces as recommended by manufacturer of shear connectors. Useautomatic end welding of headed-stud shear connectors according to AWSDI.I/DI.IM andmnnufacturer's written ins•uctinns.

FIELD CONNECTIONS

High-Strength Bolts: Iustall high-strength bolts accordiug to RCSC's "Specification for Structural JointsUsing ASTM A 325 or A 490 Bolts" for type ofbolt and type ofjoint specified.

1. Joint Type: Snng tightened.

Weld Cmmections: Comply with AWS DI.IIDI.IM and AWS DI.8/DI.8M for tolerances, appearances,

welding procedure specifications, weld quality, and methods used in correcting welding xvork.

3.5 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

REPAIRS AND PROTECTION

Galvanized Surfaces: Clean areas where galvanizing is damaged or missing and repair galvanizing tocomply with ASTM A 780.

Touchnp Painting: Immediately after erection, cleau exposed areas where prinaer is damaged or missiugand paint with the same material as used for shop painting to comply with SSPC-PA 1 for touching opshop-painted snrfaces.

1. Clean and prepare surfaces by SSPC-SP 2 hand-tool cleaning or SSPC-SP 3 power-tool cleaniag.

Tonchnp Painting: Cleaning and tonchap painting are specified in Section 099113 "Exterior Painting"and Section 099123 "Interior Painting."

INSTALLATION, GENERAL

Install deck panels and accessories according to applicable specificatinos and commentary in SD1Publication No. 31, mannfacturer's written instractinns, and requirements in this Section.

Locate deck brandies to prevent overloading of supporting members.

Place deck panels ou supporting flame and adjust to final position with ends accurately aligned and

bearing on supporting flame before being permanently fastened. Do not stretch or contract side-lapinterlocks.

Place deck panels flat and sqnare and fasten to sapporting flame without warp or deflectioo.

Cot and neatly fit deck panels and accessories around openings and other work projecting through oradjacent to deck.

Provide additional reinforcement and closure pieces at openings as required for strength, continuity ofdeck, and snpport ofother work.

Comply with AWS requirements and procedures for manual shielded metal arc welding, appearance andquality of welds, and methods used for correcting welding work.

Mechanical fasteners may be nsed in lieu of welding to fasten deck. Locate mechanical fasteners andinstall according to deck mamffacturer's written instructions.

3.3 ROOF-DECK INSTALLATION

A. Fasten roof-deck panels to steel supporting members by arc spot (puddle) welds of the surface diameterand spacing indicated.

reinforcing channels according to deck manafactarer's written instrnctioos. Weld or mechanically fastento sobstrate to provide a complete deck installation.

Flexible Closare Strips: Install flexible closure strips over partitions, walls, and where indicated. Installwith adhesive according to manufactarer's written instructions to ensare complete closure.

3.4 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

A. Testing Agency: Owner will engage a qualified testing agency to perform tests and inspections.

B. Field welds will be snbject to inspection.

C. Testing agency will report inspection resnlts promptly and in writing to Contractor and Architect.

D. Remove aod replace work that does not comply with specified requirements.

E. Additional inspecting, at Contractor's expense, will be performed to determine compliance of correctedwork with specified requirements.

3.5 PROTECTION
