The system for naming people in Spanish-speaking countries is different than in the United States. Los Nombres (First names) may be a single name but are often double names (a double first name, no use or reference of a “middle name”). The first name in the pair usually indicates whether it is a girl’s or boy’s name.

Look at these examples of possible names: José María for a ____________or María José for a ____________.

Since Hispanic society is male dominated, the father’s last name is the child’s “Family Name” or “Surname”.
