Naming Customs

= Hola, me llamo ________

The system for naming people in Spanish-speaking countries is different than in the United States. Los Nombres (First names) may be a single name but are often double names (a double first name, no use or reference of a “middle name”). The first name in the pair usually indicates whether it is a girl’s or boy’s name.

Look at these examples of possible names: José María for a ____________or María José for a ____________.

yAll children receive the last names (los apellidos) of both parents.

Since Hispanic society is male dominated, the father’s last name is the child’s “Family Name” or “Surname”. When the complete last name is used, the father’s last name will be the first one used in the pair of last names. The Spanish word “y” (and) will formally connect the 2 last names. It will then be followed by the mother’s maiden name (her father’s last name). Look at these examples of possible last names:

Calderón y SantosCalderón comes from the child’s ____________

Y means that the child is from this family _______ that family too!!! and Santos comes from the ____________.

José María Calderón y Santos and his sister, María José Calderón y Santosare the children of: Juan ____________

and Luisa ____________

Women who marry will keep their family last name = the one received from their ____________ and pick up the word “de” (of) before adding her husband’s family name. For example: María José Calderón y Santos marries Antonio López y Domingo. Her married name is: María José _______________ _____ _______________
