St. andrew Celebrates its 45th Foundation dayby: Emilio Medina

Today, on the feast of St. Jerome Emiliani (1481 – 1537), patron saint of abandoned children and orphans-- we celebrate the 45th foundation day of St. Andrew the Apostle Parish. On February 8, 1967, the parish of St. Andrew was founded as a response to the over-burdened and growing membership of the parish of San Pedro, Makati. The church was built from funds donated by Don Andres Soriano bounded by streets, J.P. Rizal, Makati Ave. Gil Puyat and Nicanor Garcia. Formed by the authority of the Archbishop of Manila, Rufino Cardinal Santos, a baptismal font was established to endow the sacrament of Baptism. This would be the starting point towards giving the faithful the other sacraments: Confirmation, Reconciliation, The Eucharist, Matrimony and Extreme Unction.

Then Msgr. Dennis asked for applause.

The painting of William-Adolphe Bouguereau was presented to the congregation. A depiction of a saint hugging the chest of Crucified Christ. It is any saint or any victim. It is such an intimate portrait of how our relationship with Jesus we should strive for. We immerse ourselves in feeling the emotions of the Passion and we

Odiver, parish priest of the St. Andrew the Apostle Parish in response to the apostolic letter of Pope Benedict XVI titled “Porta Fidei” (“Door of Faith” in English).

In a meeting with the education cluster on February 7 held at the SAAP boardroom, Monsignor Dennis outlined the need for a systematic and integrated organization within the Parish in order to respond effectively to the call of the Holy Father embodied in the apostolic letter , the Porta Fidei.

Porta Fidei is another step towards fulfilling the Apostolic Exhortation as contained in Verbum Domini which encourages the faithful to study, live and spread the word of God. Porta Fidei emphasizes that believing is not a private matter and that faith has a social responsibility. This document officially calls for Year of the Faith. The Pope invites Catholics to actively engage in the New Evangelization, to rediscover the joy of believing and the enthusiasm for communicating the faith.

“We have to profess (re-confess) our faith with conviction, with confidence and with credibility. The Holy Eucharist is the Sacrament of Charity, a mystery to be believed, to be celebrated and to be lived,’’ Monsignor said.

In addition, the whole Catholic community all over the world is called upon to learn and observe the New Roman Missal. This is an opportunity for the Parish to learn and relearn the meaning and value of the Eucharist.

On top of that the Parish has many outreach programs such as the Parish Renewal Experience, the feeding programs, scholarship program or Pa-eskwela,the Sunday School for kids, Marriage Encounter, the St.Andrew Renewal Community, the Parish Works newsletter, Leadership seminars, Parish sponsored retreats , community assemblies, and other social outreaches spearheaded by the different Pastoral Councils and sub-parishes.

In this context, Msgr. Dennis is laying the structural foundation of the Parish organization to maximize the potential of each component (i.e. clusters, ministries) ,minimize wastage, ensure proper coordination and equitable sharing of knowledge, talents and resources towards the attainment of a common goal without losing the intrinsic quality of each component.

To get the better picture of the evangelization process or education, or for the Financial Council to come up with an ideal budget within a consolidated calendar of activities, there is a need to review and study the existing structures and policies. From there the strengths and

weaknesses could be identified to better harness the resources . Maximize the benefits with the same or lesser costs.

“If we are a team, let us act as one. Before going to specifics, there might be a need to re-organize,’’ Monsignor said.

He said systematizing and integrating the resources of the parish is a must. There is a need for an organized system for unification and coordination to achieve a certain level of sustainable development.

The organizational focus is not the position of authority but that of a servant-leader model of authority and a circular chain of command from the centerpoint towards the outer circle. Better communication is a must..There must be sharing and integration of talents and resources within the clusters and sub-parishes. This idea of sharing and integrating could also be extended to other parishes to better serve the community.

“We would like to emphasize relationships and values. The core value is service to the community and to the Lord. The idea of structure is a circle,” he said.

According to him at the core of the circle is the Bishop, then the parish priest. The inner circle is the parish pastoral council composed of the heads of the different clusters The outer circle is composed of the different clusters expanding into another outer circle composed of the sub-parishes.

Monsignor outlined the need to work more cohesively and effectively: to organize; to harness the resources;to assess the support systems;and to strengthen our way of responding to the needs of the parish. Concrete progress must be attained within the existing parameters. He said we should be looking at the existing programs in a different light;show interest and concern; and look at how these activities should be carried out in a more efficient way.

Monsignor also called to task each one to prepare for the future and not only address the present needs.

“We must train new leaders , people who are willing to contribute. We must be willing to submit ourselves to vulnerability( listen to comments whether positive or not); to revise if necessary in order to really integrate.”

“We should appreciate the fact that the Parish is a family, a conglomerate of different groups, no one has a monopoly of talents and resources, therefore we should loosen our minds , establish good ties and open the lines of communication,’’ Monsignor said.

St. ScholasticaFebruary 10

St. Scholastica, twin sister of St. Benedict of Nursia, consecrated her life to God from her earliest youth. St. Gregory the Great, in his Dialogues, tells us that she was a nun and leader of a community for women at Plombariola, about five miles from Benedict’s abbey at Monte Cassino. After her brother went to Monte Cassino, where he established his famous monastery, she took up her abode in the Plombariola, where she founded and governed a monastery of nuns, about five miles from that of St. Benedict, who, it appears, also directed his sister and her nuns.

She visited her brother once a year, and as she was not allowed to enter his monastery, he went in company with some of his brethren to meet her at a house some distance away. These visits were spent in conferring together on spiritual matters. On one occasion they had passed the time as usual in prayer and pious conversation and in the evening they sat down to take their reflection. St. Scholastica begged her brother to remain until the next day. St. Benedict refused to spend the night outside his monastery. She had recourse to prayer and a furious thunderstorm burst so that

look forward to dedicating ourselves to an emulation of Christ’s passion and crucifixion. Reproductions of this painting were given to 18 parishioners as a token of appreciation for their service and dedication. They have either resigned, retired, or ended their term from their positions and they were: Corie Gomez, Ms Chit Rayala, Nitang Almeda, Rose Tacorda, Mickey Rodriguez, Ric Mundin, Cristy Vazquez, Jan Carlo Silan, Rita Uy, Vic Aceveda, Glo Pineda, Jane Misa, Roy Pasimio, Dolor dela Cruz, Naty De Veyra, Malou Iguidez, Baby Macadaeg, Onnie Misa and Edit Salonga

Fr. Allan Dichoso was also honored for celebrating his 8th year as Parochial Vicar. A Powerpoint

presentation of his life in St. Andrew followed to the tune of “All My Life.” was shown. Fr. Allan said that he gained so much weight since he started working for St. Andrew. And from now on, “I promise to lose weight. Be one of the biggest losers (of pounds).” He is happy to execute the plans laid out by Msgr. Dennis. He says, “ we try to serve you the best way we can.” And everything we have accomplished, would not have come to pass without the support and blessing of Msgr. Emmanuel Sunga, who has done so much work for this parish.

After the blessing and dismissal group picture of the honorees was done and then dinner followed.

neither St. Benedict nor any of his companions could return home. The holy Nun, having rested her head on her hands, poured forth such a flood of tears on the table, that she transformed the clear air to a watery sky.

The next morning they parted to meet no more on earth. Three days later St. Scholastica died, and her holy brother beheld her soul in a vision as it ascended into heaven. He sent his brethren to bring her body to his monastery and laid it in the tomb he had prepared for himself. She died about the year 543. Three days later, standing in his cell, and lifting up his eyes to heaven, St. Benedict beheld the soul of his sister (which was departed from her body) ascend into heaven in the likeness of a dove. Rejoicing much to see her great glory, with hymns and praise he gave thanks to almighty God, and imparted the news of her death to his monks. She was canonized sometime in the 12th century by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, before the official canonization process was established.
