Jesus said to the chief priests and the elders of the people: “Hear another parable. There was a landowner who planted a vineyard, put a hedge around it, dug a wine press in it, and built a tower.

Then he leased it to tenants and went on a journey.

When vintage time drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants to obtain his produce.

As Christmas season draws near, we hear holiday songs almost everywhere. And at St. Andrew the Apostle Parish, Christmas becomes nearer as Jollibee launches its Maaga ang Pasko Program in our parish.

The event was held last September 27, Saturday. It started with a Mass presided by Rev. Fr. Allan Dichoso, Parochial Vicar of SAAP. Mass goers were serenaded by the Mandaluyong Children’s Choir, children from Virlanie Foundation, and Ms. Julia Baretto, Jollibee’s celebrity Ambassador.

Parishioners were also invited to bring toys and books for donation which were put in the different Maaga ang Pasko boxes inside the church.

Truly, Maaga ang Pasko, basta’t tayo’y tulung-tulong at nagbibigayan. Advance Merry Christmas to all!

Paeskwela Corner

Career Talk with Doc LambertBy Regine Terce, Makati High School

Last Saturday, September 27, the Paeskwela ni San Andres had a very good speaker. He is Dr. Lambert Ilagan, an ophthalmologist and a Lector of St. Andrew the Apostle Parish.

He introduced the topic by saying how he started to want to become a doctor. It is because of lollipops. According to him, he saw a doctor with lots of lollipops and he thought that if you’re a doctor, you will have many lollipops. He told us that before he became a doctor, he studied for 14 years.

Dr. Ilagan also told of a story about a man who had a brand new sports car. When he was driving along a road, he always see an old man standing beside the road and he always did not mind the old man. One day, the car suddenly stopped running. He couldn’t fix his car until evening. Then the old man went to him and asked if he could help him. Just one press on a part of the car, the

car started to function. The man was amazed and he introduced himself and said his name is John, the old man replied and said that his name is Henry Ford.

Dr. Ilagan said that being a doctor is similar to the story. The doctors just know how to cure their patients but it doesn’t mean that they can create people.

‘’We don’t stop death, we just prolong life to turn their wrongs to right.’’, Dr. Ilagan said. He also said that he prays when he cures patients, ‘’Lord, use my hands to comfort them. Lord use my hands to heal them.’’, was always his prayer. He told us that the great physician is Jesus because he healed the blind without stitching and without pain.

I learned two things. The first one is you have to be grateful and second one is be humble enough to learn.

Faith MattersBy: Gene C.Alberto

What is Mass and where do you find it in the Bible? The Mass is the name given to the prayers and ceremonies constituting the Eucharistic Sacrifice.

In the Greek or Eastern rite the Eucharistic service is not called the Mass but the Liturgy.

Not finding the word Mass in the Scriptures, it’s not the word, but the reality it represents.

Christ instituted the Mass at the Last Supper on the night before He died. St. Matthew records the institution: “And while they were at supper, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and broke; and gave to His disciples and said: Take and eat; This is my body. And taking the chalice, He gave thanks, and gave to them, saying: “Drink from it, all of you. For this is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed on behalf of many for the forgiveness of sins. (Mt. 26:26-29)

Christ commanded the Apostles to re-enact this Eucharistic Sacrifice when He said to them after the consecration: “Do this in memory of me” (Lk 22:19). In compliance with the command of Christ, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass has been daily re-enacted in all our churches from the days of the Apostles to the present time and will be continued until the end of the world.

Why are Catholics required to attend Mass?

The Catholic Church requires attendance at Mass on Sundays and certain annual holy days. Worship is a primary duty owed to God by His people who receive

from Him not only their existence, but every other good gifts as well. The Mass is the highest form of worship and is also a privilege, a precious opportunity to encounter the great King of the universe who loves His people beyond all telling.

Why does the Church charge money for Masses?

The Church does not change money for Masses, for nothing sacred may be bought or sold. The Church forbids simony, which she defines as “a deliberate eagerness to buy or sell for a temporal price anything spiritual.”

The offering of stipend is nothing more than a lawful contribution which every member of the faithful is divinely obliged to make for the support of Christ’s ministers.

When a person requests a priest to offer the Mass for his intention, he realizes clearly that he is not buying a Mass. The Holy Sacrifice is of infinite value and could not be “paid for” by all the money in the world.

Doesn’t this practice give a wealthy man an unfair advantage over a poor man who can’t afford as many Masses?

If a poor person is unable to make the customary offering, a priest will be glad to celebrate the Mass for his intention just the same. Indeed pastors are obliged to offer up the Holy Sacrifice without stipends for all committed to their care.References: Ex 20:8-11,3:1-13, Dt 5:12-15, 2 Ch 36:21, Mt 28:1, Mk 1:21;

many others back to religious observances.

Though Father Regis longed to work as a missionary among the North American Indians in Canada, he was to live out his days working for the Lord in the wildest and most desolate part of his native France. There he encountered rigorous winters, snowdrifts and other deprivations. Meanwhile, he continued preaching missions and earned a reputation as a saint. One man, entering the town of Saint-Andé, came upon a large crowd in front of a church and was told that people were waiting for “the saint” who was coming to preach a mission.

The last four years of his life were spent preaching and in organizing social services, especially for prisoners, the sick and the poor. In the autumn of 1640, Father Regis sensed that his days were coming to a conclusion. He settled some of his affairs and prepared for the end by continuing to do what he did so well: speaking to the people about the God who loved them. On December 31, he spent most of the day with his eyes on the crucifix. That evening, he died. His final words were: “Into thy hands I commend my spirit.”

He was canonized in 1737.

What will the owner of the vineyard do to those tenants when he comes?”

They answered him, “He will put those wretched men to a wretched death and lease his vineyard to other tenants who will give him the produce at the proper times.”

Jesus said to them, “Did you never read in the Scriptures: The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; by the Lord has this been done, and it is wonderful in our eyes?

Therefore, I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that will produce its fruit.”

Reflection:

Jesus has an ongoing conversation with the chief priests and elders in view of having a common agreement with the teachings of Jesus. However, the rift and the divide get wider and bigger. No matter how much Jesus tried, the religious leaders were set in their ways and convinced of their own righteousness. Thus they missed the time of their visitation. There is nothing as unfortunate as a closed mind and a hard head. Throw in pride and you have a deadly combination.
