Elevating Consciousness: Using Ancient Scientific Tools to Achieve Happiness10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.Dr. Anand Chockalingam, professor of medicine at MU, returns to Osher for a series on

consciousness, including sessions on what makes us human, translating mind-body methods to explore higher consciousness, and artificial intelligence. Bring on the happiness!

The American Presidents1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.The ever-popular Dr. Jay Ward returns to continue his exploration of the lives of the American presidents, starting with Lyndon Johnson and proceeding chronologically to Ronald Reagan.

Tuesdays — June 8, 15, 22 & 29

History of Jewelry: More “Why We Wear Clothes” 1:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. Patti Doyle, retired Stephens College costume design professor, returns to continue her series on the human motivation for clothing choices. This time she’ll focus on jewelry, from prehistory to today’s styles.

Walk With Ease 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Meets TWICE PER WEEK (Tues./Thurs.) for SIX WEEKS (12 total sessions)Whether you need relief from pain or just want to be active, this program can teach you how to safely make physical activity part of your everyday life. In addition to the twice-weekly virtual meetings, participants will walk on their own (or in groups) three times per week.

James Thomson’s “The Seasons” and the Picturesque9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. The Seasons (1730), a four-part poem, depicts each season in descriptive and reflective terms. Instructor Clarence Wolfshohl, professor emeritus of English at William Woods University, will explore one part/season each week, considering Thomson’s life, the social context and influences, and the poetry.

Meet the UM System Presidential Engagement Fellows10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Continue with this series, and hear from current UM System faculty members, representing all four UM campuses, as they share how their teaching, research and expertise benefit Missourians.

Tess Uncensored: Thomas Hardy and the “Ache of Modernism” 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Participants will discuss Tess of the D’Urbervilles and the issues of morality, identity and class status that author Hardy illuminates as he describes the “ache of Modernism.” Instructor Michael L. Shuman is new to Osher and teaches in the Department of English at the University of South Florida.

Baseball Hall of Famers I’ve Known, and More…9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Join columnist Bill Clark for a trip through some of the highlights of the history of baseball. Clark will draw upon his 36 years as a Major League Baseball scout and share photos from ballparks all over the world.

Trends and Changes in Personal Finance: Take Action10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. The knowledgeable team from MU’s Department of Personal Finance will cover current topics in finance, including the death of the “stretch IRA,” cryptocurrency, the proposed Biden administration plan and how to select the right financial advisor.

Thomas Hart Benton: Missouri’s Regionalist Artist1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. First two weeks of the semester — June 10 & 17Stories of rural life and history abound in Benton’s works. Join Sarah S. Jones, historic site specialist at the Jefferson Landing State Historic Site and Missouri State Museum, for an exploration of Benton’s biography and artistic development.

Notes for Women! Leading Ladies of Song in Missouri, 1821-20211:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Last two weeks of the semester — June 24 & July 1From women’s suffrage to the stage to the Academy of Arts and Letters, Missouri boasts strong female leads in the musical world. With examples taken from the book 200 Memorable Missouri Musical Moments, coauthor Libby Roberts will explore the bicentennial of the Show-Me state in terms of its iconic female musicians.

Discussions With a (Retired) Banker: What the Numbers Can Tell Us10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Instructor Jeff MacLellan will discuss the local economy, the national economy, inflation, retirement planning, investing, economic history during the pandemic, housing, employment and more.

The United States After World War II (Part Five)1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. In this continuing series examining America after WWII, Dr. Jay Ward will explore the time frame from Watergate until the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the Cold War. Participants may register for Part Five without having attended the earlier sessions.

Our program is online-only over the summer, but watch for “hybrid” offerings in the near future. Whether you’re in mid-Missouri or Zooming in from elsewhere, you’ll be able to keep your brains active with Osher@Mizzou!

A brand new academic year begins in September. Your BEST VALUE is to register as a Premium member ($240 fee) in fall, allowing for unlimited classes for the entire year. Our tentative dates are below – mark your calendars NOW.

How to Register and Membership Tips

How to RegisterPlease register online, if at all possible. Full step-by-step instructions are below.

If you have not registered online before and would like guidance, the Osher staff will be available to assist you over the phone, via email or via the Zoom application. To arrange a time to work with Walker or Jennifer, email [email protected].

If you are unable to complete an online registration or do not have access to a credit or debit card, please email [email protected] or call (573) 882-8189. The Osher staff will assist you and come up with accommodations so that you may register for classes.

Please note: The Osher program will not be offering walk-in registration for the Summer 2021 semester. There are no in-person meetings taking place for the Osher program at this time.

Getting Started Osher Members Who Have Registered Online Before:You will need your log-in ID (which is the email address you used to register) and your password. If you cannot remember your password, click the “Forgot Your Password” link. If you are a returning Premium member who will be reenrolling for $10, you will be receiving an email with a discount code to unlock the $10 fee.People Who Have Not Registered Online Before: • Make sure you know your email address – this will be your login ID. • Please create and have ready your own, secure password for use this semester and in the future.

(Passwords should be eight characters or more and include letters, numbers and a symbol (*, #, $ or !). We recommend that you write down and save your password.)

Zoom Basics

What is Zoom?Zoom is the videoconferencing platform MU has chosen and supports to provide high-definition, interactive collaboration tools and telephone conferencing to use for communication and collaboration.

The application is free to use. You do not need to purchase a subscription to use Zoom to take an Osher@Mizzou class or attend a meeting or gathering. For more information and tips on how to use Zoom to access Osher classes, visit osher.missouri.edu.

Scholarships are available!

Need-based Scholarships: For those whose financial constraints make it difficult to join Osher at the Premium level. The scholarship covers $60 of the $100 membership fee.

Caregiver Scholarships: For those who take part in caregiving services for family members and friends. Provides a complimentary Basic membership, which includes Osher clubs and member benefits for the full academic year.
