1 December 2015 From the Pastor’s Desk… Epiphany The day of Epiphany is January 6, twelve days after and including Christmas (from which the song gets its name). Christmas traditionally was celebrated from December 25 through January 5. Of course, now it begins some time in October! But before the Christian Church celebrated Christmas on December 25, there was already a celebration known as Epiphany, dating from as early as the end of the second century. It was a day of remembering the Magi coming to the baby Jesus. His birth was also a part of the celebration. Later the Celebration of Christmas was introduced on December 25. Today, Epiphany is still a time for remembering the story of the Magi. The focus is on Jesus becoming known to the world as represented by the Magi who came from a distant land. The symbol of epiphany is often a light or a star. Jesus brings light into the world. The word “Epiphany” can mean the “manifestation” or “appearing” of God. But in common usage, it refers to a “sudden realization” or a “leap of understanding.” Epiphany begins the season of Epiphany, which lasts until Ash Wednesday – the beginning of Lent. We will celebrate Epiphany on Sunday, January 3 (the Sunday closest to Epiphany – January 6). We will hear the story of the call of the first disciples (Mark 1:16-20). The following five Epiphany Sundays we will be considering “Faith Stories” from the Gospel of Mark. We often hear the expression, “It is only a matter of faith.” Or that if you have faith everything will be OK. Jesus said that if we had just a little faith, the size of a mustard seed, we could move mountains. And yet, we know that sometimes people of great faith often encounter rough times. What does it mean to have faith? We will look at the question “What is faith?” through five passages of Mark’s gospel. I will be praying for an epiphany in our understanding of faith. MAKE A U-TURN THIS LENT Help Us Create A Lenten Devotional Book Lent is a 40-day period of reflection and repentance as we prepare for Jesus’ death and resurrection. The word “repent” literally means “Turn Around.” Lent is a time for us to make a U-turn back toward God. The focus of our Lenten Devotional will be on turning our lives around, so that we are heading in the direction

that God is calling us. We would like each member to consider writing at least one devotional. A form is available for you to guide you in your thoughts. A scripture is suggested for each day or you can select your own. Your reflection can be a personal turnaround moment or an example that speaks to you. Please consider participating in this project. Worksheets are available in the office and can be e-mailed to you. It would be helpful to have your submission sent to Lanette by e-mail ([email protected]). The deadline for submission is January 24 so that the devotional books can be ready by Ash Wednesday, February 10. SAFE SANCTUARIES POLICY CHANGES The Leadership Team and the Staff-Parish Relations Committee want to make you aware of several important changes resulting from the updated Safe Sanctuaries policy for all West Ohio Conference churches. The main goal of the policy and procedures is to reduce the risk of abuse in all churches. Therefore, the Staff-Parish Relations Committee is implementing new procedures for us that meet the standards:

1. Staff and all volunteers working with children or youth need to complete an initial Background Screening Form with a national background check.

2. Background checks need to be repeated every 3 years. 3. Training is required for all volunteers or staff who directly supervise children or

youth. This includes an initial orientation about the Safe Sanctuaries policy followed by annual reviews of the policies, procedures for supervision, CPR, and First Aid. Training plans will be announced in January, 2016.

4. At least two adults will supervise all activities for children and youth in open view.

Forms for getting the appropriate FBI/BCI background check are available in the church office. The background check can be done at:

LEADERSHIP TEAM UPDATE The December meeting was opened with devotions by Marilyn Lodge. The treasurer’s report by Jerry Charles included good news of reaching the $22,500 Lackland Match goal. Current utilities and maintenance costs are down. For 2016, the estimated budget is $550,000 with some personnel costs up but other expenses down. Jerry is still gathering pledges, with giving currently estimated at $275,000. Unpledged giving totals are estimated at $40,000 to $50,000, and rental income at about $41,000. The pastor’s report by Larry Clark noted that the Freedom School probably won’t happen in the summer of 2016 because of lack of major community funders at this time. Larry hopes to meet again soon with the Ad Hoc church tour group for ongoing discussion about sanctuary improvements. Consideration is being given to using connection cards weekly in worship rather than pew pads. The Epworth Singles group, open to all, will meet in March at MSUMC. The Trustees have completed insurance bids and purchased a policy from a different company, with both a $7000 reduction in premium and good coverage. Bids for the repair of the front steps have been received and the work will be done in the spring. Chuck Thayer also reported that the parsonage rental is going well. Three new community members for the MSNC board were approved by Leadership Team: Menyonn Daniels, Batina Layson, and Al Woods. The board needs one or two more members from the church to maintain the required ratio. On January 17 and 24 during the Sunday School hour Sue and Chuck will do a presentation on their three-day visit/seminar to Church for All People. A Lenten devotional booklet will be created by members of our congregation. The Breakthrough Goals, promoted in all West Ohio churches, were reviewed for MSUMC. MSUMC’s organizational structure will be reviewed in a special Leadership Team meeting on Thursday, January 14, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. The next regular Leadership Team meeting will be on Saturday, January 9, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. JANUARY TRUSTEES REPORT The Trustees have completed the process of re-bidding the church insurance and have decided on a new insurance carrier for 2016. Our carrier will be Mennonite Mutual Insurance Company based in Orville, Ohio. This is an A-rated carrier, their coverage is as good as or better than the 2015 insurance carrier, and the cost is $7,000 less. All of the insurance carriers who toured the building before giving us a proposal were very complementary of the way the building is being maintained. A big pat on the back to Tess, along with Dwight and James! We have made a few repairs at the parsonage – one small electrical issue and the purchase a new washing machine to replace the 13-year-old model that died. The rental of the parsonage to Epworth Pastor Dave Pettengill and his family is going well and is a win-win for the Pastor’s family and for us. Projects for the winter and spring will include reviewing bids for some potential upgrades to the sanctuary, and arranging for the repair of the front steps which is planned for May.

LUNCH BUNCHERS The next gathering of the Lunch BuncHers will be Saturday, January 23 at 11:30 a.m. at the LongHorn Steakhouse, 4155 Talmadge Road, Toledo -- providing there is no snow/ice storm that day. Any woman in the church or in the soft borders of MSUMC is welcome to join us for food and fellowship. In November we talked about the blessings we have received and in December we discussed how we have been a blessing to others. Both were great times of sharing. As a courtesy to the restaurant we like to give them a 24 hour notice as to how many will be attending. Thus, please call either Betty Nicolen at 419-475-4064 or Kathy Moore at 419-885-3918 by noon on Friday, January 22 to let us know if you will be attending. Hope to see a "Bunch" of you there. Serve With Us

BLANKET TIME! We will celebrate Blanket Sunday on January 31. All contributions will support the efforts of Church World Service – the CROP Walk people – to ensure that persons who experience a natural disaster have a blanket for warmth and shelter. Church World Service also supplies small tools for agricultural production. COMMUNION OFFERING The First Sunday Communion Offering for January, February and March will support Toledo Campus Ministry’s Alternative Spring Break. This year, TCM will be sending a group of mentors and students to Nashville, Tennessee to work with Project Connect Nashville (www.projectconnectnashville.org). Project founders Alan and Michelle Murdock aspire to help disconnected and vulnerable men, women and their families build relationships with others who will encourage and guide them, providing assistance when needed, educating and equipping them for life’s challenges and celebrating every victory along the way. They recognize the “blind spots” where churches, businesses and individuals could step in and serve to make a deep impact in the lives of families in their community who are living in poverty and seek to educate churches about poverty and connect them with opportunities to serve. The students and mentors will have the opportunity to serve in a variety of ways, including construction at a community center, feeding the homeless and assisting youth in afterschool programs. Participants in Alternative Spring Break are asked to pay a subsidized rate of $300 for the mission trip. The Communion Offering will help to provide the subsidy as well as scholarships for students who would like to participate in Alternative Spring Break but need financial assistance. Any money given in excess of what is needed supports the Rev. Dee Baker Mission Fund and helps to make future mission trips possible. This event is the community building, spiritual formation and service highlight of the school year. Please give generously.

BOOK STUDY STARTS THIS MONTH Our ten-week book study starts on Saturday, January 16 and will continue every Saturday for ten weeks, ending on March 19. The class will meet from 12 noon to 1:30 p.m. each week, led by Lou D’Amato. We will be reading and discussing Toward a Hopeful Future: Why the Emergent Church is Good for Mainline Congregations by Phil Snider. All are welcome.   BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS DEEP AND WIDE Sue and Chuck Thayer recently attended a three-day conference at the Church for All People in Columbus. They will be sharing what they saw and heard on two Sundays, January 17 and 24, at 9:00 a.m. during the Sunday School hour. The Church for All People is a thriving church, located in a neighborhood much like ours. They have embraced the challenges and new opportunities around them, making connections and building relationships. Come to hear about some of their ideas and successes.

WONDER, LOVE, AND PRAISE

CONNECTION CARDS ARE COMING! What are Connection Cards? Connection Cards are a way for the congregation to stay connected with one another through recording attendance, prayer and gifts of time and service. So how does this work? In your bulletin each week you will have a card that you will be asked to fill out. You will list your name and any contact information that may have changed such as address, phone number, or e-mail. You will also have an opportunity to request prayer by the church staff and an option of having it put on the prayer chain. Each week you also have the opportunity to list your mission service hours as part of your offering. How are they collected? The Connection Cards are a part of your offering. When the plate comes around you drop in your card. What about visitors? Connection Cards are helpful in getting information from our guests. E-mail addresses are especially important since that is how many communicate today. What happens to the Pew Pads? We will no longer use the pew pads. The ushers will have only one collection time during the service, rather than two. How can I get prayers included in Worship? We will continue to make available the prayer request cards for the worship service, but they will not be collected by the ushers during the service. They will need to be filled out prior to the service if you want the pastor to include them in the Pastoral Prayer. They should be handed to the ushers or pastor before service begins. Prayers that are not submitted on the prayer request cards, but on the Connection Card, will be prayed for, in confidence, by the staff during the week and will be included in the prayer chain, if so desired by the person submitting the request. Why this change? Churches have found that the Connection Card gets a better response and has more complete information than pew pads. The number of prayer requests increase when people know that they are not going to be shared aloud in worship. Also, since many people give their financial offering electronically, monthly or quarterly, they often have nothing to put into the offering plate. With the Connection Card, everyone has something to contribute. And, it also points out that our offering is more than just money, and includes our time and our service.

HOLLY GLEN EXTENDED CARE INITIATIVE

FANCY NAILS Every other Monday, at 1:30 p.m., “Fancy Nails” is offered to residents of Holly Glen. This is the ministry Mary Ziegler was providing before she moved away. When the call went out for someone to replace her, I thought I could give it a try. Mind you, nails are not my forte – I hardly ever do my own. But the one-on-one contact appealed to me, and it has been fun and rewarding. I’ve gotten to know many of the residents on a first name basis, and have come to know many of their personal stories. One of the ladies even used to work with my husband, Lou, in Labor and Delivery in the early days of his practice. If anyone is looking for a way to connect with our family at Holly Glen, this is it. And I cannot say enough about Kim, the activities director, and one of our newest church members. She has a real love and passion for her job, and it’s a pleasure to help her. So please consider being a part of “Fancy Nails” at Holly Glen! Cindy D’Amato

CHILI COOK OFF AND POTLUCK WANTED: Competitors for the MSUMC 2016 Annual Chili Cook-off WANTED: Judges for this prestigious award WANTED: YOU Following Sunday worship on January 17, all are invited to Reeder Hall for the 2016 annual Chili Cook-off and Potluck. Contestants must bring a prodigious pot of their special chili to the basement kitchen before service. Crockpots are welcomed but not required. Chili must be at room temperature or warmer. (The Play with Us Team wants to take part in worship too.)

Judging will be by People's Choice. Those not competing are asked to bring salads, breads, desserts or other complimentary dishes. You can also contribute funds in the green roofed house at the beginning of the serving lines as you are able. Join us in 2016 to answer the burning question: "The 2016 Chili Cook-off Champion is….. ????"

MONROE STREET NEIGHBORHOOD CENTER

Greetings from the Neighborhood Center: I hope you have been following us on Facebook. If not please go like our page so you can know what's happening at the center. “Each one bring one” has certainly worked out for our Savvy Seniors program as the word of our classes has been shared with others and our numbers continue to rise. Members of the Tai Chi classes have designed their own T-shirts and have begun wearing them to class. A special thank you to those who came out to assist with the holiday community luncheon. Over 80 people were served a hot meal and received a gift along with a plentiful food bag. Volunteers matter! On Wednesday, December 23, we honored our volunteers with a luncheon at The Black Pearl. What a good way to show how much we appreciate all the time and energy they spend to help keep our agency running from day to day! Yours in service, Clara L Petty MSNC AT THE VALENTINE THEATER It will be a fun time at the Valentine Theater on Saturday night, January 23! Monroe Street Neighborhood Center and the Start High School Jazz Band will co-sponsor a showing of the classic movie The Blues Brothers as a joint fund-raiser. In addition to the great classic movie, there will be good food to buy, good music from the Jazz Band, and a silent auction. The tickets cost $10 and can be purchased from any Neighborhood Center Board member – Jim Vail, Carol Hill, Wilma DiManna, Rich Edwards, Larry Clark, Bill Hoover, Wendy Jackson, or Chuck Thayer. Join us in supporting the Neighborhood Center and curing your January blues!

STAY WITH US IMPORTANT REMINDER If you or anyone you know is admitted to the hospital, make sure you notify the church if you would like the pastor visit, be put on the e-mail prayer chain, etc. Because of privacy laws, hospitals no longer notify the church unless the patient requests it. STEWARDSHIP IS MORE THAN MONEY Remember that with the beginning of the New Year, it is time to decide where your time and talents can best be given to fulfill your stewardship commitments. There are many opportunities to serve. COOKIES FOR SHUT-INS Shut-ins are always so grateful for the beautiful Christmas cookies provided by the congregation. Thank you so much for all who donated cookies and helped deliver the plates of cookies. THANKSGIVING FOR THANKSGIVING BASKETS Twenty-five Thanksgiving baskets were collected and distributed in November. Several families were able to celebrate on that day because of the generosity of the Monroe Street congregation. A big thank you to all!
