UPCOMING DATES PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Our combined Education and NAIDOC Week celebrations kicked off on Monday with students and teachers enjoying a fantastic day of cultural learning during the Gurrawin Incursion. The Gurrawin facilitators ran a series of workshops covering the topics of sustainability through bushfire management, native bush tucker, dance, traditional storytelling and ochre painting. A traditional smoking ceremony and corroboree brought the day to an end. Please enjoy some of the moments captured on the day in our NAIDOC 2021 photo layout. Yesterday to celebrate the Education Week theme of ‘Lifelong Learners’, students shared their career aspirations; coming to school dressed for success in attire to match. We have amongst our students, aspiring scientists, business owners, movie directors, teachers, professional sports people, chefs, lawyers, engineers, trades people, miners, constructions workers, health care professionals, emergency service officers, IT workers and artists. Integrating maths with our Career Day, students constructed a human graph to help us identify the most popular career choice of APS students. Can you guess what it is? Check out the aerial photograph of our ‘Career Graph’ taken by a drone piloted by Steven Hinschen. Students will be able to use the graph in their maths lessons when learning about constructing and interpreting graphs. Now, that’s interactive learning! Many thanks to Mr Hinshcen for capturing the image – and all done from outside our school gates. Technology at its best! We have a few other activities planned for students, including a FREE SAUSAGE SIZZLE LUNCH on THURSDAY. No ordering is required, however, if your child does not eat sausage sandwiches, please send them to school with lunch as there is no alternative on offer. This week’s Celebration Assembly will incorporate our usual awards, although our MERIT and PBL awards this week will have a NAIDOC theme. Despite their different appearance, they can still be used as part of our Awards System. At the assembly we will announce the winners of some competitions that have been running this week, as well as our special Education Week Awards. These include: Most unique/interesting Career Day costume Guess the Staff Member Competition Writing Competition Winners Design Competition Winners – School of the Future Education Week Awards Outstanding Contributions to Education (live streamed if possible) Congratulations to our Debating Teams on their participation and success in the recent debates against Muswellbrook South and Denman Public Schools. Wishing all our athletes competing at the Zone Carnival in Singleton today, the best of luck today. PRACTISING!

Hello Aberdeen Public School

Hot on the heels of the Variety We Move Grant which opened earlier this

month, we have more news to share with you – and believe us when we

say it’s very good news which is something we all need right now!

The Variety We Learn Grant opens today, and it is here just in time to help

families living with financial hardship to purchase educational technology

and supplies.

Now more than ever, a computer and internet access at home is an

essential part of school life (especially when school and home collide –

hello, lockdown!)

Not to mention all the extra exercise books, paper, pens and colouring

pencils that are now taking up residence on those dining tables being used

as school desks!

Of course, we know not every child is fortunate enough to have all of

these resources. And without them, kids are faced not only with

significant academic challenges but also with issues such as social

isolation that can prevent them from reaching their full potential.

Unfortunately, these challenges and risks are often increased in remote

and rural areas where kids may not have access to everything they need

for online learning.

Enter the Variety We Learn Grant to help bridge the gap.

Open to families with children aged 4 – 18 throughout NSW and the ACT,

We Learn comprises two grants – Educational Technology and Educational

Supplies.

The We Learn Educational Technology Grant includes laptops, iPads and

computer accessories such as a mouse and keyboards. The We Learn

Educational Supplies Grant includes not only uniforms, stationery and

backpacks, but also school excursions, incursions and camps.

We Learn forms part of the Variety Kids Support framework that has been

revamped to make it easier for families to request - and receive - the help

they need.

Speaking of making things easier, we are thrilled to announce we have

partnered with Harvey Norman to supply all of our educational

technology. Successful grant applicants will simply access an exclusive

Harvey Norman/ Variety website to choose their items which will then be

dispatched and delivered directly to their door.

Similarly, we have streamlined the Educational Supplies Grant and now

recipients can shop for uniforms and stationery with our new suppliers,

Big W and Lowes, as well as their school uniform shop.

If there is a family you know that may be eligible for the We Learn Grant,

please check out the guidelines for all the eligibility requirements and

application details.

We also encourage you to forward to a friend or to any of your colleagues

and contacts who may be interested – particularly if they happen to live

or work in the far-flung corners of NSW and the ACT.

And be sure to hurry - applications close Friday 3 September at 5pm.

Together, we can ensure that all kids – no matter where they live, no

matter how rural or remote – can access the educational technology and

supplies they need to learn and achieve their very best.

Go online to the Variety We Learn Grant website to apply.
