Aberdeen Public Schools Loses a Leader

Art at CHS

Aberdeen Public Schools lost a teacher, coach, administrator, and friend. Don Reshetar passed away on October 14, 2010. Don and his wife, Rosemary, moved their young family to Aberdeen in 1960. Here he worked as a teacher, coach, and administrator for over 30 years. Don was head football coach from 1960-1972, winning ESD Conference Titles in 1964 and 1967. He was Athletic Director for 22 years, receiving the 1982 Athletic Director of the Year, and also directed the Aberdeen Relays for 22 years. In 2006, the field house at Clark Swisher Athletic Complex was named in his honor along with coach Jim Krechman. Don served as director of the SD High School All Star games along-side his mentor Clark Swisher for over ten years. In 2008 he was inducted into the CHS Hall of Fame. He was on the Aberdeen Public Schools Foundation Board from 2003-2010 and served as president from 2009 until 2010. Don will be remembered for all he did for the Aberdeen Central School and the Aberdeen community. We are currently developing an endowment scholarship in Don’s memory. If you are interested in contributing, please contact the office at (605) 725-7118.

Students, staff, alumni, and people visiting CHS will have the opportunity to see even more art on display. The third of the four sculptured bronze reliefs is now in place. Athlet-ics is the theme of the latest relief, which was funded by the CHS Athletic Boosters. All funding for this project is outside the general school budget and must rely on individual or club donations. For more information about helping to fund the final relief project at CHS, please contact the Foundation office.. In addition to the new artwork on the outside of CHS, the Established Artists Gallery has come to fruition. Three pieces, “The Artisan” by Michael Murray ’66, “Memories” by Marilyn (Evelo) Hanson ’53, and “Lake Park” by Charles Stroh ‘61, are on display by the Thomas F. Kelly Theatre entrance. If you are or know of a CHS graduate who is an estab-lished artist interested in donating a piece of art to be included in this permanent collection, please contact Dr. Gary Harms at [email protected]

Reunion Recap

Upcoming Reunions

Eleven reunions were held over the past summer in Aberdeen and throughout the United States. Many of the groups took tours of both old and new CHS. “The Alumni Room and tour of old Central in its returning glory made memories return,” mentioned Betty Artz, class of 1950. For more information on the changes in the Alumni Resource Room look on page four of the newsletter.

“Alumni admiring restored CHS trophies in the new trophy cases.”

Class of 1980 Car Wash.

CHS Alumni enjoy sharing memories in the Alumni Resource Room.

Molly Johnson and Rolf Johnson, Class of 1980, present a check to the Aberdeen Thunder Special Olympics.

The Class of 1980 decided to do something in addition to their reunion to give back to the Aberdeen community. They hosted a car wash to benefit the Aberdeen Thunder Special Olympics team. Class member Kelli Donovan explains, “We wanted to do something to give back. Growing up in Aberdeen made each of us the person we are today.”

Treasures from the Past: New CHS Alumni Room Filled with Memorabilia

Shiny trophies, bright-colored band uniforms – and even a “King” – await visitors to the new Aberdeen Central High School Alumni Room. After almost two years of work, the CHS Alumni Room is complete in the first-floor room in the Aberdeen Recre-ational and Cultural Center (old CHS). “Volunteers have given tours to classes having reunions and will set out items from that class’ era during the tours,” said volunteer Lynn Hanson. Two reunion tours have taken place this summer. More are planned, including during the CHS Hall of Fame weekend in September, Hanson said. The alumni room, which used to be two CHS class-rooms, contains donated cabinets filled with trophies dating back to the 1910’s, pictures in original frames, cheerleader

sweaters, band uniforms, letterman jackets, and a life-sized Elvis Presley mannequin in full costume. The costume of “the King” was donated by former Central student Wally Wingert, who used to wear the garb. Wingert is a nationally known actor and voice actor. Even more treasures can be found in the upstairs work room – film reels of sporting events, scrapbooks, yearbooks, and more trophies (the oldest is from 1908) – all sorted by decade. The volunteers have cleaned and restored countless tro-phies, thanks mostly to the group’s trophy fixers, Linda Ellis and Zelda Chapel. The volunteers meet 1-3 p.m. every Tuesday in the work room. They invite anyone to join them.

Most of the volunteers – including Nancy Karlen, Charlie and Virginia Clark, Betty Dobber-puhl, Ellis and Chapel – are alumni. But Mary Amacher is a former teacher, and Hanson was a longtime school board member. “It’s just something that’s near and dear to my heart,” Hanson said. A sincere thank you is extended to the many alumni (and family of CHS alums) who have donated yearbooks, Blue and Gold newsletters, Word Crafts, as well as photos, scrapbooks, letter jackets, etc. to the Alumni Room. The Alumni Room volunteers would like to have multiple copies of each yearbook available for reunions, research and display purposes. If you (or a parent/sibling) have a yearbook that you would like to donate to the Alumni Re-source Room, please contact Katie Zeeb at 1-605-725-7118 or [email protected]

Meet the Eagles

Celebrating Student Success

Fans going to CHS athletic events are in for a treat this year. After the first home game, students, family members, and fans are encouraged to stay for a special Meet the Eagles autograph session. Athletes and coaches line up courtside, sign team posters, and meet CHS fans. “Meet the Eagles is a great way for fans to connect with Golden Eagles players. It creates ex-citement for the season. The athletes look forward to these events just as much as the fans do,” commented Gene Brownell, CHS Athletic Director.
