NEWSLETTER 11th June 2018

Monthly meetings are usually held on the 2nd Monday of each month from 1pm to 4pm with a speaker from 2pm. *** Annual membership cost just £15, visitors always welcome ***

TODAY: Mr Richard Thomas "A Day in the Life of a Thames Tug Boat”

Next Meeting. Monday 9th July 2018

Mrs Tricia Thompson “All my loving-the lives of the Beatles”

2

This month, I want to tell you about the exciting things we have planned for you for our Beatles - themed afternoon on Monday July 9th.

Our speaker, Tricia Thompson will be presenting “All My Loving – the lives and music of the Beatles”.

Broxbourne Handbell Ringers will be entertaining you with two contrasting Beatles numbers, Yesterday and Yellow Submarine. You will have an opportunity to join in the chorus for this as the words will be in the newsletter!

We are thrilled to have secured the services of the Beatles’ official photographer, who will be putting on a display of photos of the band in the foyer and bar area. This will be a fascinating excursion into 60s nostalgia as we look at snapshots of the Beatles’ life.

In addition, some of our groups will be featuring the Beatles in their displays. Sugarcraft, Craft Unite and Painting for Pleasure have all come up with exhibits.

Stan Benton has produced a photo quiz, in which you are invited to wander round the bar area, foyer and auditorium spotting the puzzle pictures and guessing the Beatles song title. There will be a prize for the person getting the most titles correct. This will be awarded at the August meeting.

To join in the spirit of the afternoon, you are very welcome to dress up in 60s-style gear as a homage to those 4 Lads from Liverpool - John, Paul, George and Ringo - who revolutionised music and popular culture in Britain and the world.

The Safety of Group Members

The safety of our members is paramount, so we would like to remind you

of the following:

All participation in LVU3A activities is at the

member’s own risk.

Members should carry their membership

card for all U3A activities

****************************************************************************************

Group Sharing Agreement This will be up and running once all U3As within the Agreement (Broxbourne, Ware, Cheshunt, Buntingford, Waltham Abbey, Hertford and Lea Valley) have agreed to all the conditions. The most important thing to note is that members of our U3A can’t just see a group in another U3A newsletter and go along and join it! Only those groups which are struggling to be viable and which have agreed to open up to members from other participating U3As can be approached. You will find a list of groups in the other 6 participating U3As that are open to new members, together with their contact details, on the Secretary’s Table in the foyer, once the scheme is fully operational. The list will be updated regularly. If you have a query about the scheme, please contact either Dennis Bruce or myself – contact details on the inside back page of the newsletter.

The Newsletter It was brought to our attention by one of our members that Data Protection works both ways. We expect our committee to keep our own personal data securely, but we should also take care how we handle personal data on other people. With that in mind, can I ask you to take care how you dispose of any unwanted newsletters, given that they contain telephone numbers and some email addresses? Thank you.

eBuddies Many of you in the past have benefited from the E-Buddy Project which was begun at Ware College and later continued at Turnford College. It was designed to enable those of our members less knowledgeable about IT to work one-to-one with a student and get to grips with their iPad, PC, smartphone or tablet. If there are still members who would be interested, Steve Gollop, Chair of Cheshunt U3A is running a Shared Group in collaboration with Herts Regional College which our members can attend.

You simply need to contact Steve on:

News for Our Members Shawe Physio Michael Shawe has had a table in the foyer at several of our recent main meetings, and he has attracted a lot of interest among our members.

He will be attending the May meeting and wishes to find out what interest there might be in starting a new group for Arthritic hands. This would be helping to reduce pain and improve mobility, dexterity and strength. The class would involve use of a paraffin wax bath, hand exercises and some hands-on physiotherapy mobilisations of the joints. It may also look at including some acupuncture treatment.

If you think this would interest you, go and have a chat with Michael in the foyer. He would like to find out what day would suit people best.

“Never Too Late” Campaign Nathan Davies, Project Manager for Public Health on Herts County Council, is promoting a campaign, as part of Hertfordshire’s ‘Year of Physical Activity’ called “It’s Never Too Late To Be Active!”, launched on April 23rd.

Its intention is to help older residents become more active. All residents registering with the campaign receive a free local activity pass for themselves and a friend. They can also get personalised support and enter a prize draw for an iPad, Fitbit or £100 clothing voucher.

You can sign up at: or alternatively drop into your local library.

Royal Wedding Celebrations The ‘Busy Fingers’ craft group of the Lea Valley U3A have just added to their unusual collection of knitted memorabilia with a new set of royal figures to commemorate the wedding of Prince Harry to Meghan Markle at Windsor on Saturday, May 19th.

The royal figures were on display in Hoddesdon Library until May 26th, together with some other significant creations from a previous project ‘Iconic London’.

The craft group, headed by Barbara Cordina, and member, Elaine Penrose, are justifiably proud of the intricate and detailed work involved on the Royal Wedding project and grateful to all the nimble-fingered ladies involved.

The Lea Valley U3A knitters have also been regular contributors to the Hoddesdon Christmas decorations over the past few years and, since 2012, have created a full-sized, knitted play house, complete with garden, and a group of Olympic figures.

Shakespeare Group Is Still Alive and Well! The Broxbourne U3A Shakespeare group will shortly be celebrating its third birthday! Not bad for what may be considered to be a ‘minority’ interest, with, for many people, the memory of boring English lessons at school.

In our informal group sessions, reading and discussing the plays, we have discovered so much that is still relevant today, lots of unsuspected bawdy humour and so many everyday expressions that originated with Shakespeare. Looking at social and theatrical history adds interest, too, as do the occasional DVD clips from outstanding performances, or considering aspects of a scene from a director’s or actor’s point of view. Occasionally, we get together to see the excellent relayed NT and RSC productions and we’ve celebrated the Bard’s birthday in April a couple of times, with lunch in a traditional English pub…In short, we are enjoying our studies.

The group is open to Lea Valley and Cheshunt U3A members and any other branch that has agreed to the sharing arrangement. Designated Friday meetings, 11.00 am to 12.30 pm at Mayhem Theatre Arts, Hoddesdon.

The Heritage Group Visits Ely and meets Mistress Cromwell!

On Thursday May 24th, a coachload of Lea Valley members left Hoddesdon at 9am bound for the Fenland city of Ely. The weather started off rather chilly and dull, but by the time we reached Ely, the sun had come out and it was getting pleasantly warm. Joan Underwood had divided her intrepid heritage seekers into two groups to be guided by Nora and Mary around the Cathedral precincts and the many old buildings that make up the King’s School. On what was now a beautiful day we thoroughly enjoyed visiting this fascinating city and some of its more secret places. In particular we liked the little chapel, reached by a narrow spiral staircase and only accessible to guided groups. Here, you could still see delightful little stone sculptures of medieval people, which had been destroyed by Henry VIII’s men elsewhere in the city. We had a good long break for lunch, enough time for some among us to walk down to the Riverside, and for others to find lunch in the varied eating places Ely had to offer. After lunch, we all met up again at Cromwell’s House, a short walk from the Cathedral, where we were welcomed by Mistress Cromwell, who demonstrated how she did the cooking in her kitchen. Eels featured a lot. She then showed us around the rest of her home. (Actually, it was Nora our guide who had dressed up for the visit!) We could see how people dressed in Cromwell’s time, and even try on Roundhead helmets. Not a good look! In another room there were lots of artefacts from the Civil War and next door, we were able to see Cromwell on his death-bed. Cromwell died in London not Ely, however. We discovered that the Cromwell family has a link with Cheshunt. Cromwell’s son Richard ruled briefly after his father’s death but was so useless he was kicked out and the Monarchy brought back. Richard Cromwell is buried in Cheshunt Church. In the hour of free time remaining, lots of us decided to visit the cathedral. For me, the highlights were the spectacular octagon tower, and rather lovely tapestry cushions in the Lady Chapel which were decorated with scenes showing how the cathedral was built. A big thank you to Joan for organising such an excellent day, and for laying on such good weather!
