Creative workspaces include: In the West End you can find Wasps Studios, Scrapantics, Dundee Ceramics Workshop, Dundee MakerSpace, Dundee Comics Creative Space in Vision and DCA Print Studio. University of Dundee, Abertay University and Dundee & Angus College all have leading art/design courses and each have Degree Shows running in May. The Circle is a hub for charities, social enterprises, community groups and socially aware businesses in Dundee. Some of the many festivals to check out include: March – Dundee Women’s Festival; May – Dundee Design Month and Dundee Design Festival (biennial), Degree Shows; June – Dundee WestFest; July - Dundee Summer Streets Festival; Sep – Dundee Pride, Dundee Flower and Food Festival; Oct – Festival of the Future, Discovery Film Festival, Dundee Science Festival; Nov – NEoN Digital Arts Festival, Dundee Jazz Festival, Christmas Light Nights. Jessie’s Kitchen in nearby Broughty Ferry and Newport- based KitschnBake. Restaurants Visit The Giddy Goose, Agacan for Turkish, Dil’Se for Indian and Bangladeshi, Más for Mexican tapas, Tahini for Lebanese, and Manchurian for Dim Sum. Tapas at Sol Y Sombra, and Gallery 48 with exhibitions too. The Bach for a hint of New Zealand and Cafe Montmartre for French Cuisine. For fine dining, check out Castlehill, Tayberry and The Newport, complete with exhibitions at the adjoining Tatha Gallery. Also worth a visit, Daisy Tasker, The West House, and Bridgeview Station. Bars The Wine Press. St Andrews Brewing Co. The King of Islington. Bird & Bear and right next door you can go to Abandon Ship. Wild Rover. Dynamo. For beer, Brewdog, Duke’s Corner has a whole wall of crafts on tap. Scottish craft brewer Innis & Gunn’s The Beer Kitchen, and The Phoenix. The Art Bar is a West End institution, across from the art school with live music and laid back atmosphere. Go up Perth Road for George Orwell and The Speedwell. Did someone mention Draens and the Tiki Lounge at Underworld Cafe? Shh.... Places to stroll and see The top of the Law, our extinct volcanic plug, is the best for panoramic views over Dundee, Perthshire, Angus and Fife, and take a stroll along Dighty Burn. Wander along Riverside at sunset and admire the Tay Rail Bridge, visit the Riverside Nature Park and Dundee Botanic Gardens, then head to Maggie’s Centre to admire world renowned architect, Frank Gehry’s impressive building, from the outside only. Cycle the Green Circular, 27 mile route around the city. Tayview Community Garden and Ninewells Community Garden are also perfect for a visit. If you like street art or appreciate a good statue, take the Open/Close street art trail in the doorways of the city centre and Stobswell, Oor Wullie, Desperate Dan and Minnie the Minx, Dundee’s Penguins, get a takeaway drink or sandwich at The Auld Tram, then Bash Street, and the Lemmings! Enjoy Slessor Gardens Discovery Walk and take in Sharing Not Hoarding, an experimental public art project. Visit Dundee Urban Orchard and stroll along the waterfront. Then, walk or cycle over the bridge to Fife and discover Kinshaldy Beach at Tentsmuir which is stunning and has to be one of the UK’s best, it’s on route to St Andrews. Get a day pass on the Number 73 bus and spend your day visiting a trio of great sandy beaches in Carnoustie, Monifieth and Broughty Ferry – have a pint in the Fisherman’s, an ice-cream in Visocchi’s, explore Barnhill Rock Gardens, Broughty Ferry Castle and take a Pirate Boat to see the dolphins in the Tay Estuary. Arrr. Dundee Rep Theatre and Scottish Dance Theatre produce and show world class performances. Verdant Works takes you back to Dundee’s jute textile past. Step onboard RRS Discovery to explore the famous polar expedition ship. Then visit nearby 06 HM Frigate Unicorn, and while you’re there get active with Foxlake. Dundee Museum of Transport tells the stories of local transport pioneers and innovators. Gardyne Theatre, Whitehall Theatre and Caird Hall oer a range of music, theatre and comedy.
