Behind the scenes Here are a few of the organisations and festivals which keep the city creative as the UK’s only UNESCO City of Design. Creative workspaces include Wasps Studios, Dundee Ceramics Workshop, DCA Print Studio, The Circle, Dundee Comics Creative Space and Dundee MakerSpace. University of Dundee, Abertay University and Dundee & Angus College all have leading art/design courses and each have Degree Shows running in May. V&A Museum of Design, Dundee opening in September 2018 – designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, his first building in the UK. Some of the many festivals to check out include: May – Dundee Design Month, Degree Shows; June – Dundee West Fest; Aug – Dundee Flower and Food Festival; Sep – Dundee Pride; Oct – Festival of the Future, Discovery Film Festival and Dundee Science Festival; Nov – NEoN Digital Arts Festival, Dundee Jazz Festival, Christmas Light Nights. Places to stroll and see The top of the Law, our extinct volcanic plug, is the best for panoramic views over Dundee, Perthshire, Angus and Fife. Take the Open/Close street art trail in the doorways of the city centre and Stobswell. Head along Riverside at sunset and admire the Tay Rail Bridge, visit the Riverside Nature Park, head to Maggie’s Centre to admire world renowned architect, Frank Gehry’s impressive building, from the outside only. Cycle the Green Circular, 27 mile route around the city. Walk or cycle over the bridge to Fife, enjoy Slessor Gardens Discovery Walk and take in Sharing Not Hoarding, an experimental public art project. Visit Dundee Urban Orchard and stroll along the waterfront, also the site of the V&A Dundee. If you appreciate a good statue, check out Dundee’s Penguins, Desperate Dan and Minnie the Minx, Oor Wullie, visit Bash Street and the Lemmings! Indie spots and shops Make sure you visit Downtown Dundee (around Exchange Street/Dock Street), Nethergate/Perth Road/Westport, Union Street and Broughty Ferry. Groucho’s has rare and vintage finds of the vinyl variety and visit optical boutique Spex Pistols for frames/lenses and brilliant interior/banter. DCA Shop for unique gifts and designs. Fluph for wool and yarn, workshops and classes. Fraser’s Fruit and Veg. While in Broughty Ferry you can check out Clementines, Assai and Pretty Fly Studios. And down-town you can go to Cheesery, HeartSpace Wholefoods, JA Braithwaite’s and Hard Grind. Cartocon. Manifesto. Arkive. Fashion designer Hayley Scanlan’s boutique shop. Ahoy Comics. This Way Up. Visit 71 Brewing and try the Dundonian Pilsner. Global Grocers. La Freak. Parks Dundee has many great parks, including: Camperdown Park and Wildlife Centre; Dudhope with popular skatepark; The Factory skatepark is great too; Balgay with great views and Mills Observatory; Baxter Park with a grand pavilion; the city centre calm found in The Howff cemetery; and Magdalen Green with bandstand is a great space on a sunny day. Kinshaldy Beach at Tentsmuir is stunning and has to be one of the UK’s best. It’s on route to St Andrews. The Sidlaw Hills behind Auchterhouse are brilliant for endless walking. Get a day pass on the Number 73 bus and spend your day visiting a trio of great sandy beaches in Carnoustie, Monifieth and Broughty Ferry – have a pint in the Fisherman’s, an ice-cream in Visocchi’s, explore Barnhill Rock Gardens, Broughty Ferry Castle and take a Pirate Boat to see the dolphins in the Tay Estuary. Arrr. Back in Dundee, if you’d like to discover more about the city, or would like to hear about Dundee’s dark past – check out DD Tours. If you’re looking for dog friendly places to eat and drink, check out the website, Sit & Stay Dundee. Restaurants Visit The D’Arcy Thompson, Agacan for Turkish, Tahini for Lebanese, Manchurian for Dim Sum, Tapas at Sol Y Sombra, Gallery 48 with exhibitions too, and Más for Mexican tapas. The Bach for a hint of New Zealand and The Boozy Cow. For fine dining, check out this trio: Castlehill, Tayberry and The Newport, complete with exhibitions at the adjoining Tatha Gallery. Also worth a visit, Cafe Montmartre. Dil’Se. The West House. Bars The King of Islington. George Orwell. The Wine Press. Mayfly. Bird & Bear. Jam Jar has a range of cocktails, including Dundee themed ones. The Art Bar is a West End institution, across from the art school with live music and laid back atmosphere. For beer, Duke’s Corner has a whole wall of crafts on tap. Visit Scottish craft brewer Innis & Gunn’s The Beer Kitchen, Brewdog, The Speedwell and Phoenix. Did someone mention Draffens and the Tiki Lounge at Underworld Cafe? Shh.... Live music Clark’s on Lindsay Street. Conroy’s Basement. The Reading Rooms is an underground club renowned for its ability to cross musical genres. Beat Generator Live has gigs by new talent and touring bands.
