‘It is a significantwork, and it is alsosignificant that it is
published nowbecause 2014 is aspecial time in the
history of the WaipaDistrict.’ALAN LIVINGSTON
A book to help mark the past150 years of Waipa District waslaunched recently and this week-end the authors will be availableto meet the public.
The 300-page sesquicentennialwork, containing more than 100historic and contemporarystories of the region and illus-trated with scores of mono-chrome and colour photographs, has taken a year to produce.
It is written by renownedHamilton-based historian Rich-ard Stowers and long-time Wai-kato journalist Kingsley Field. Both are authors of numerousprevious works.
The booked title Waipa,Home of Champions, wasinstigated by the Waipa 150thCommemoration Committee
formed by the previous WaipaDistrict Council under the may-oralty of Alan Livingston.
But no cost for the work hasfallen on ratepayers of the dis-trict. Instead, generous supportfrom sponsors has meant that notonly is the book largely paid for,but also that it will be madeavailable to the public at lessthan half its normal retail price.
It has been produced by theWaipa Community CharitableTrust.
Just over 2000 copies of thebook are available for only $25each from Paper Plus stores inTe Awamutu, Cambridge and atHamilton Airport, as well asmuseums and i-Site Informa-tion Centres in the two towns, and other outlets.
Waipa District Council alsopresented copies to all schools, libraries and museums in thedistrict.
Mr Livingston, who hasguided the project for the pastyear, said that although therehad been histories written onCambridge, Te Awamutu andthe former Waipa County, Wai-pa, Waipa, Home of Cham-pions is the first publication toincorporate the whole district.
“It is a significant work, andit is also significant that it ispublished now because 2014 is aspecial time in the history ofthe Waipa District,” said MrLivingston.
“The book covers the exten-sive and rich story of ourWaipa region, and it is a
readily readable and compre-hensive record of our history aswell as more contemporarys t o r i e s . I t i n c o r p o r a t e si n f o r m a t i o n f r o m p r e -European days to the present.”
Mr Livingston said the book, which includes a forewordfrom former Prime Ministerand Waipa resident HelenClark and an introduction bycurrent Mayor Jim Mylchreest, would also appeal to manypeople beyond the Waipa dis-trict, particularly those willfamily connections to theregion.
■ Meet the authors in store at TeAwamutu Paper Plus this Saturdayfrom 10am - noon.

Our generous folkHow do we learn generosity? Is it a
learned behaviour?I am convinced that it is learned and
ask you to check out this statement byobserving your generous friend’s chil-dren's giving patterns.
So to back this seemingly contro-versial opening I want to thank onceagain all those in our community whohelped in any way to send off 640 filledshoe boxes from Te Awamutu for thechildren in Fiji, Samoa and Papua New
Guinea.This thanks extends to local
retailers, Altrusa members, schools, families, individuals, churches, theCourier staff, clubs and communitygroups.

Town swim pools are ‘appalling’Recently I went to the town pools to
take my son swimming and I wasappalled at the state of the facility.
A year ago the place looked great andit only cost $2 to take a toddler for aswim. Now it cost $5 and there wasmould around all the pools, the disabledtoilet was out of order, the soap dis-penser in the toilet was broken and the
locks on the mothers’ room were alsonot working with a sign stating use atyour own risk.
Who is responsible for the pools?Council or is it a private company?
Where is this extra money going, because as far as I can see it is not goingback into the pools.

Formal reportsfrom BoardsBY GRANT JOHNSTON
The feedback processfrom community boards toWaipa’s service deliverycommittee is set to beformalised.
At last week’s servicedelivery committee meet-ing, group manager servicedelivery Barry Berginasked committee membersfor their views on receivingformal reports from TeAwamutu and CambridgeCommunity Boards andPirongia RatepayersAssociation.
Mr Bergin said thefeedback would relate tochanges that could only beenacted via the servicedelivery committee, suchas levels of services orperformance of services. This would involve issuesat a strategic level, ratherthan minor items.
Committee chairpersonGrahame Webber said theboards had always had theopportunity through theCouncil agenda to raiseitems that were topical.
Cr Andrew Brown saidwhat was being suggestedwas a more formal methodof reporting and he agreedwith the proposal.
Cr Webber said the com-mittee now had authorityto approve some of thechanges requested whichcould previously only bedone by Council.
Cr Brown wonderedwhether formal reporting
would work with thetiming of meetings (TeAwamutu CommunityBoard was due to meet thatnight, after the servicedelivery committee meet-ing during the day).
Mr Bergin said staffwould still be able to updatethe committee on topicalissues where an urgenttimeframe was necessary.
Mayor Jim Mylchreestsaid streamlining wasimportant. He said theexperience with seniorcouncil had been that anumber of small matterswere ‘saved up’ over aperiod of months to take toa meeting — some of whichcould be addressed muchearlier.
“The reporting needs tobe at the strategic level, notabout things like potholeswhich direct reporting cansee fixed much sooner.”
Cr Jim Bishop saidCouncil has always beenably served by Councilrepresentatives on theboards who took boardissues to Council whenneeded.
“We don’t want to bebothered by the day to daystuff.”
Cr Hazel Barnes saidregular reporting fromcouncillors serving on com-munity boards was highlydesirable.
“We used to have com-munity board reports aspart of our agendas,” shesaid.

KIHIKIHI pupil Mikaera Hemara holds his completedpatu.
Kihikihi School principalAndy Morgan saysrecapitation (inclusion) ofYear 7 and 8 students hasmade for an exceedinglybusy and exciting year forthe ‘dual blend’ school.
“In our first year it hasbeen a learning and growingphase, but it has addedconsiderably to the cultureof our vibrant school.
“The programmes wehave developed fit ourtamariki — Maori, Pakehaand our small number ofPasifika students as well.”
In tech-arts the childrenhave had opportunities towork with hard materials,as well as completing anumber of carved itemsusing Maori designs.
“We look forward to thefinal projects for the year, which will see tamariki cre-ate taonga (treasures) withbone carving.
“The carving has cer-tainly been a hit.”
Next year the aim is forstudents to begin carvingparts of the community foodgarden (mara kai) that isbeing developed.
“Students will be able tolearn about working withthe land as part of the Maraki te tepu (from garden tothe table), growing food andusing this to feed body, mindand spirit.”
In food technology pupilshave prepared a number offoods from both contempor-ary and historic cuisine.
“A number of the recipeshave been from a Maoricontext — but much to thedisappointment of whanau, not much of this arriveshome!”
Alongside this, musicand arts have developed fur-
ther and will be extendednext year with the aim ofpurchasing band equipmentto to run alongside drum-ming and guitar pro-grammes.
The outdoors has alsobeen a considerable part ofthe Year 7-8 programme, which has included theWilliam Pike Challenge anda trip to Port Waikato.
Mr Morgan says growthat the school complementsthe ‘dual medium’ schoolblend.
“Our local whanauunderstand this, but thewider community tends toview our school as a kurakaupapa or full immersiontype of school.
“This is a misconception— only a third of our schoollearning is an immersionenvironment based on TeReo Maori me ona tikanga(Maori language protocols, customs and correct ways ofacting).
“The other two thirds ofthe school learn in English.
“Tikanga (customs andprotocols) do pervade acrossthe school. Our aim is thatall our graduates, whetherlearning in English or Maoriwill leave the school with anunderstanding of tikanga, which will allow them tocomfortably walk in a Maorior Pakeha world when theyleave school.
“Our school kuia, RovinaManiapoto-Andersonproudly tells us that we havecreated something unique atour school.
“We have a special teamhere who are very commit-ted to our tamariki and theirwhanau.
“In our staffroom, youwill hear both Maori andEnglish spoken daily.”
In consultation with theschool community, KihikihiSchool has established fourkey values as part of theschool curriculum.
These are respect, kotahi-tanga (being one as a group),integrity and manaakitanga(supporting and caring forothers’ wellbeing)
“As our schoolwhakatauki states: Hetangata ako, he whanau ako.Learners today, leaderstomorrow.”

Council’s safety focusBY GRANT JOHNSTON
Waipa District council-lors want more specificinformation aboutaccidents in Councilworkplaces and issuesidentified in externalhealth and safety audits.
This became evident atlast week’s finance andcorporate committee meet-ing, where the committeereceived its first quarterlyreport on health andsafety.
The impetus for thereport was two-fold.
Government hasreleased its plans forreforms as a response tothe Pike River Mine Disas-ter, resulting in the Healthand Safety at Work Act dueto be implemented nextyear.
Government’s aim isthat the annual rate offatalities and seriousinjuries in workplaces is atleast 25 per cent lower by2020 than it is today.
Council also has anobjective to foster a culturewhere staff are comfort-able raising and reportingsafety-related problems.
It is pursuing a jointmanagement/staff Healthand Safety enterpriseencouraging staff buy-in tosystems and processes ofprevention.
Overall, there is astrong requirement forCouncil to improve ishealth and safetyreporting, recording andmonitoring capabilities, including implementing astaff training register, a
contractor register and areview of hazard registersto ensure risks are ident-ified and are being appro-priately managed.
The staff reportprovides committee mem-bers, Council executiveand management person-nel with an overview of theHealth and Safety perform-ance of Council.
The quarterly reportwill ensure key personnelare aware of Health andSafety activities duringeach reporting period, understand the key risksand be assured these risksare being managedeffectively.
Cr Judy Bannon askedwhether thought had beengiven to providing healthand safety training for staffinternally.
Council managerhuman resourcesStephanie Shores saidthere were definitely areasin which in-house trainingwas feasible — includinghazard management andidentification.
Staff would receivetraining in safe drivingstrategies and be encour-aged to report any ‘nearmisses’ as well asaccidents.
Cr John Bishop con-gratulated staff on theHealth and Safety effortsnow being made and saidalthough it was “lightyears late”, the plans fordriver awareness pro-grammes and safe anddefensive driving strate-gies was a great initiative.
Cr Hazel Barnes asked
if there was planning inplace for education andsupport of staff, who wereexpected to deal with thepublic in an inclusive way.
Stephanie Shores saidthere was humanresources training for staff— resilience training, howto deal with aggressivemembers of the public andcustomer support.
She said four key areaswere identified forimprovement in the audit— dealing withcontractors, assisting staffwho work alone or thosewho may encounteraggressive people and driv-ing.
Cr Clare St Pierre saidshe was encouraged bywhat she was hearing, inthe area of vehicles especi-ally.
“It is important to set aculture where staff arecomfortable to report,” shesaid.
“As councillors, weneed to see external auditresults to understand whatthe issues are and to beable to ask about them.”
Cr St Pierre said coun-cillors needed to takeresponsibility to makesure these issues werebeing addressed.
Cr Sue Milner agreed.“The only place we see
reporting of accidents inthe workplace is in thewater report and eventhen, we do don’t seeexactly what they are.”
Stephanie Shores saidthis gave staff a great steeron what to include inreporting.

‘Swamp’ bus link mootedCr Marcus Gower wants to see
an orbiter bus route linking TeAwamutu with Cambridge andOhaupo trialled.
At last week’s service deliverycommittee meeting Cr Gower askedif Waipa District Council was mak-ing a submission to the regional
council on the Land TransportStrategy and if so, the suggestion ofinvestigating the ‘across theswamp’ bus link could be included.
Committee chairperson,Grahame Webber said he under-stood that the route had never beenoffered because there was not
enough patronage indicated.Cr Gower said the reason not
enough patronage had beenindicated could be that there was noroute in place.
“I don’t think you would know ifit would work until it was tried,” hesaid.
Campaign messagehits the roads again
‘As men we shouldn’tever allow violence into
our homes.’WHITE RIBBON RIDERAARON MORRISON
Motorcyclists are on the roadnow for the 2014 White RibbonCampaign, heading to our regionearly next week.
The ride runs from from 18-29November — from Northland toGore, aiming to stop violenceagainst women in their communi-ties.
The White Ribbon Ride is nowinto its sixth year and still grow-ing. Each November the week-longmotorcycle tour visits some 60 pluscommunities and takes part inmore than 80 events deliveringanti-violence messages encourag-ing men to take The White RibbonPledge (to never commit, condoneor remain silent about violencetowards women).
Men from all over the countryjoin the core group of riders toshow they do not condone violencein our communities.
The riders, many of whom havelived with, or through violence, know just how damaging thatbehaviour can be. It is this experi-ence that enables them to connect
with men from all walks of life.“Not every rider has experi-
enced violence, but for those of uswho have, we know just howdamaging it is,” says White RibbonRider Aaron Morrison.
“Violence can destroy your fam-ily, and the relationship you havewith your partner and children.
“As men we shouldn’t everallow violence into our homes. It’sa destructive force full stop.
“I’ve met children who areviolent because they mimic theirparents; grandparents who are vio-lent and still passing on thoseattitudes to the whole family, andparents who haven’t worked outthat their actions are shaping the
lives of their mokopuna,” says MrMorrison.
Walking away from violence isnot easy. But it is possible, and ifyour mates support you, that canmake all the difference.
“That’s why we want men tojoin us on the ride. All you need is abike with more than 250cc and youcan ride locally or join us for thewhole week. There’s no alcohol onthis ride — it’s about the kaupapaand the difference men can make toending violence.
“As men and as White RibbonRiders, we have a role to playinfluencing other men. And weneed your support to do that. Comeand ride with us and show thatkiwi men will not accept violence,”says Mr Morrison.
■ TheWhite Ribbon Ride is inOtorohanga onMonday and in TeAwamutu onWhite Ribbon Day,Tuesday, November 25. The ride thenheads to Hamilton ending in Aucklandon Saturday November, 29. Checkwhiteribbon.org.nz for information.

TE AWAMUTU Rotary 2014 Essay Competition winnerSophie Stocker with organiser Peter Robertson andSally Bodley, representing the judges.
This year’s annual TeAwamutu Rotary 2014 EssayCompetition winner in thesenior category was SophieStocker, a student at TeAwamutu IntermediateSchool for her essay WhatWould Happen?
What Would Happen? It’s getting closer, bigger
and there’s no where to run,no where to hide. I’mhypnotised. I drop. Zoomingthrough the swirls.Adrenaline hits, scaring mynerves, forcing them to rip.My eyes close …
Somebody’s tickling mynose. Waiting happily infront of me is, it can’t be, apillow? Behind it is a whitehorse. No, it’s a Unicorn. What? I mustn’t be thinkingproperly. Then the strangestthing happens. “She’sawake! Finally”, the pillowslaps its edges togetherastounding. “It’s ….Talking.”
“That’s he, thanks to you,and Shy is my amazingname, Shy, the magnificentmagic pillow who …”, hecarries on, seeming proud ofhimself, but the unicorninterrupts, “Yeah, don’tworry about him. Most sayhis mother regrets callinghim ‘Shy’! Oh, Popsy by theway. My name.”
I attempt to speak, but thewords are left waiting. “Andthis is Stanley, he’s well …. anerd”, Shy whispers, pointing to a Lamacorn, “hedoesn’t like us calling himthat!”. “Excuse me, but I ammothering like a ‘nerd’ thankyou very much. I’m just anextremely intelligent ‘book-worm’ who occasionally getshigh distinctions in everysubject…”.
“Yeah, more like everytime!” says Popsy in disbeliefto Stanley’s previous words.
“And it’s not nice topoint!” he continues. Theycarry on arguing. Stanleymaking ‘smart comebacks’!
I’m still hypnotised. Notby the swirls, but how could Ibe? A Unicorn?!
I look away to get aglimpse at the magical
worlds around me. The threelittle pigs are creepingthrough the woods wherelittle Red Riding Hood ishappily skipping along withher basket of freshly bakedmuffins. The puddles andlakes are made of chocolateand the trees are made ofdelicious caramel flakes.Splashing around in thepuddles is Yankee Doodle, seeming happier than he is inthe rhymes, but my eyes focuson the orange sky. Sugarrainbows and candyflossclouds, rock candymountains and jelly birds!Wow! I think to myself.
I look beside me, only tosee a Very big bug, “That’s abig bee!” I stare in amaze-ment. Suddenly, I hear gig-gling and out of no where acute little bear arrives. “Ithink you’ve just shrunk!”.Her sparkling eyes shine atme. Her innocent look couldget her out of prison even ifshe pleaded guilty. Two softpaws rise from her backholding a bright silver tray.On it are some deliciouslooking pink cookies. Theylook as though they are madeof silk. “Cookie?” she says,“there’s a surprise in eachone!”. I grin suspiciously, taking two. The sound of thecrack as I take a bite makesme want to have even more!… But never mind!Aggressively, I spit it out sofar, I could win a gold medal!“Blaaaaaaa, what’s in this?”I cough, attempting to get ridof the poison-like taste.“Whoopsy, I may have used
salt instead of sugar! Try theother one.” She tries to makeit look like a mistake. Mynose screws up, totally deny-ing the whole idea. I trusther, slightly. Although, Idon’t want to die young soreturn the last piece back tothe tray. “Trixie” her sweetlittle voice says. “What?”.“The name’s Trixie. Well, atleast that’s my nickname. Myreal name is Taliah, buteveryone calls me Trixie!”.
I think I know why!By now, I am standing up.
Trixie, me and the othersbegin to walk down a licoricepath. We turn several cor-ners, twisting and turningand zipping up and downelevators. Finally, we arriveat a small … well … candyhouse. I see gummy flowersand candycane walls. Themailbox is made from amixture of different candies. The whole backyard is filledwith peppermint flavouredgrass with exciting things todo like a rock climbing wallmade of chocolate, swingsmade of licorice and a hotchocolate spa pool!
“Happy to settle here?”asks Stanley. “I’m staying?” Ianswer in shock.”Sure, aren’t you?” wonders Popsy.Trixie begins to make a poolof tears. They are all staringat me like I’m their only hope.
Should I? But what wouldhappen to this wonderfulland of true myths and fabu-lous fantasies if I leave? Whatwould happen? Will it goback to being a fairytale?“I….I…”

HIGH HONOUR: Katie Laurie, pictured on Dunstan Springfield during The Ultramox FEI World Cup Seriesequestrian at the Hawke’s Bay Show, took out the Ultramox FEI World Cup New Zealand at her homevenue of Mystery Creek on the weekend.
Katie Laurie may have wonnearly every trophy going on theNew Zealand showjumping cir-cuit, but on Sunday she added anextra special one to the cabinetwhen she took out the UltramoxFEI World Cup New Zealand atMystery Creek.
Riding Dunstan Kiwi IronMark, Laurie not only won theclass, she also claimed the GavinPike Memorial Trophy.
The trophy was donated by herparents Jeff and Vicki McVean inhonour of Mrs McVean’s latebrother.
Making it even more special, the tray itself was initially won byJeff McVean in 1979 at Hicksteadin the United Kingdom aboard theNew Zealand bred Copper Royal.
The victory was Iron Mark’sfirst world cup win as well asLaurie’s first world cup victory atMystery Creek.
“I have tried to win this (tro-phy) a lot, and have been second Ithink five times, so it was a specialwin,” Laurie says.
Iron Mark’s owner JuneBerrington accepted the trophyalongside Laurie.
“Mark is 100 per cent genuine,”Laurie says.
“He jumps really well indoors,so I thought I would just concen-trate on him today — besides, Ireally want to try and get him toVegas,”
The winner of the New ZealandWorld Cup Series has the oppor-tunity to represent the nation a theworld final, which in 2015 is in LasVegas.
“Mark actually helped me outtoday too — we had a hairymoment going into the water and
he just took over and fixed it.”Today’s course was designed by
Germany’s Frank Rothenberger, who has designed courses atOlympics, world champs, worldcup finals and other top events.
“That was a real treat,” Lauriesays. “It was a very nice courseand it is great to have him buildinghere.”
Thirteen combinations startedthe two round class, with justprevious series winners Laurieand Maurice Beatson (Danne-virke) aboard My Gollywog goingclear.
Ten came back for the secondround, carrying their faults. Thistime there were also clears fromSally Steiner (Tauranga) aboardOn The Point Slick Chic and the
very in-form Helen McNaught-McFarlane (Taupo) onCarnutelabryere, as well as Laurieand Beatson.
However, Laurie was a fractionfaster to take the class ahead of herlong-time rival and former WorldChamps team-mate.
It is the second of the sixqualifying world cup rounds beingheld this season, with just the bestthree to count.
