THE BEATIFICATION OF FR. STANLEY ROTHER
On September 23rd, in the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City, Fr. Stanley Rother was beatified as a Martyr if the Church.
He was assassinated on July 28, 1981 in his mission parish of Santiago Atitlan, Guatemala. Fr. Rother was born in the little
farming community of Okarche, Oklahoma on March 27, 1935. He became a diocesan priest and after several years of
parish ministry he responded to his Archbishop’s call for volunteers to go to Guatemala and minister among the indigenous Mayan people. It was a very chaotic time in
Guatemala, and throughout Central America. Great civil unrest led to the death of thousands of innocent persons at
the hands of military, paramilitary, and death squads. Fr. Rother, a rather unassuming and mild mannered person,
found himself defending his people and giving them a voice where they had none. He was on the hit list of some of the
more radical groups. When urged not to return to Guatemala after a trip home, he refused to abandon his people, saying that a shepherd does not abandon his sheep in bad times.
For this fidelity and because he instinctively understood the imperative of justice in the Gospel words of Jesus, Fr. Rother
gave up his life. When Pope Francis approved his beatification on December 1, 2016, Fr. Stanley Rother
became the first Untied States born person to be declared a martyr for the faith. More information about the remarkable story of this parish priest’s life can be found on the website of the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City. With the Church in Oklahoma City and Santiago Atitlan, we join in thanking
God for the witness of Fr. Stanley Rother’s life and for the power of God’s grace shining through Fr. Rother’s life and
ministry.
