USE THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION AT YOUR OWN RISK. READ THE INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE

RUNNING THE ACTUAL TEST.

USERS SHOULD ALREADY BE FULLY FAMILIAR WITH NORMAL USE OF THE SYSTEM BEING TESTED.

IF A DIAGNOSTIC FAILS, YOU MAY WANT TO SEEK THE ASSISTANCE OF A TRAINED TECHNICIAN TO

DETERMINE THE CAUSE.

AS FAR AS I KNOW, THESE PROCEDURES ARE DESIGNED FOR 8TH

GENERATION HONDA ACCORDS.

THESE DIAGNOSTICS MAY NOT WORK WITH ALL TRIM LEVELS.

Climate Control System Diagnostic

The climate control system has a self-diagnostic function. To turn the self-diagnostic on, do the following:

1.  Turn the ignition switch to LOCK, then to ON.2.  Press and hold the OFF button, the within 10 seconds press and release the REAR WINDOW

DEFOGGER/MIRROR DEFOGGER button five times. Release the OFF button; then the self-diagnostic

begins.

NOTES:

a.  The blower motor will run at various speeds regardless of what the panel is displaying.

b.  If there is a problem with the system, the temperature indicator flashes “88”, and the A/C

ON indicator or the AUTO indicator (or both) also flashes. Segments in the temperature

indicator then indicate which DTCs are present.

c.  If there is more than one DTC, they are displayed on at a time in sequence followed by a

pause (all the display indicator segments illuminate) between the DTCs.

d.  If there are no problems detected, the segments will not illuminate, and the system willappear to be turned off.

Instrument Panel Light and Gauge Diagnostic

Before doing the self-diagnostic function, make sure the No.5 (7.5A) fuse in the driver’s under-dash fuse/relay box

and the No.15 (10A) fuse in the under-hood fuse/relay box are OK.

1.  Push and hold the SEL/RESET button.

2.  Turn the combination light switch ON.

3.  Turn the ignition switch ON

4.  Within 5 seconds, turn the combination light switch OFF, then ON, then OFF again.

5.  Within 5 seconds, release the SEL/RESET button, and then push and release the button three times

repeatedly.

NOTES:

a.  While in the diagnostic mode, the dashlights brightness controller operates normally.

b.  While in the diagnostic mode, the SEL/RESET switch is used to started the Beeper Drive

Circuit Test and the Gauge Drive Circuit Check.

c.  If the vehicle speed exceeds 1.2 mph or the ignition switch is turned to LOCK, the diagnostic

mode ends.

d.  During the diagnostic mode, all indicator lights within the instrument cluster will blink.

e.  At the initial state of the diagnostic, the beeper sounds intermittently. The beeper sounds

continuously when any of the following switch inputs are switched from OFF to ON: Cruise

Main, SET/DECEL, RESUME/ACCEL, CANCEL, SEL/RESET, parking brake switch and VSA OFFswitch.

f.  When entering the diagnostic, the beeper sounds five times and all instrument LCD

segment blink five times. The speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge, and engine

coolant temperature gauge needles sweep from the minimum position to the

maximum position, then return to the minimum position.

g.  After the beeper stops sounding and the gauge needles return to the minimum

position, pushing the SEL/RESET button starts the Beeper Drive Circuit Check (one

beep) and the Gauge Drive Circuit Check again.

h.  This diagnostic cannot be repeated until the gauges return to the minimum position.

Audio System Diagnostic

The audio system has a self-diagnostic function. Not all functions appear on all models. There may be

other diagnostic functions not covered here.

1.  Turn the ignition ON and turn the audio unit OFF.

2.  Push and hold buttons 1 and 6. While holding the buttons, push the VOL PUSH PWR knob to on.

Release the buttons and the self-diagnostic functions begin.

3.  By pressing a preset button, the input starts the diagnostic mode that is assigned to that preset

switch.

a.  No. 2 button: Audio button, knob and remote switch detection. Allows individual

manual selection of all audio panel knobs, buttons, and remote switches to verify if they

are functional. While properly detected, the applied knob button or remote switch

name and/or value is displayed.

b.  No. 3 button: Entire LCD lighting/light-out mode. Turns on/off the entire LCD to show

the presence or absence of an LCD failure.

c.  No.4 button: Illumination lever indication mode. Indicates the duty cycle for the

illumination dimmer control of the gauge assembly.

i.  Gauge dimmer values:

1.  Headlights Off: OFF

2.  Headlights On: 01 (max low) through 22 (max high)

d.  No. 5 button: Vehicle speed pulse indication mode. Indicates the vehicle speed pulse.

e.  AF/FM or FM button: Reception level check mode. Indicates the reception level. When

entering the reception level check mode, the AM/FM or FM button is used to change

the main/sub antenna. The diagnostic ends if the audio unit or ignition is turned OFF.

i.  The diagnostic screen checks the audio unit’s reception level. This level can

then be used in the diagnosis of audio unit reception quality. The reception leve

is displayed in decibles (dB).

1.  Park the vehicle outdoors in a good place for reception

2.  Tune to a powerful local FM station and a powerful AM station and

record the station numbers.

3.  Enter the reception level indication mode (see 3e above).

4.  Tune to the FM station you recorded earlier using the TUNING knob and

note the decibel level.

5.  Press and release the A.SEL button to turn the antenna amplifier off and

note the decibel level.

6.  Press and release the A.SEL button to turn the antenna amplifier back

on.

7.  Repeat steps 4 through 6 to check the AM station you recorded earlier.

8.  Turn the ignition off or audio unit off to exit test mode.

9.  Compare your results to a known good vehicle of the same make,

model, year and trim level in the same location and under the same

environmental conditions.

HandsFreeLink Diagnostic

1.  Turn the ignition switch on.

2.  Press and hold the HFL BACK button for more than 5 seconds.

3.  When the HFL system enters the diagnostic mode, the following will occur:

a.  If the system has not completed testing for DTCs, the HFL system says “The hands free

link system test is in progress”.

Page 4: 8G Diagnostics

b.  If there is no DTC, the HFL system says “The hands free link system is OK”.

c.  If there is any DTC, the HL system says “The hands free system needs to be serviced”.
